Seroiusly, my title does not lie. For my college research paper I'm using Destructoid dot fucking com as a source, and my professor green-lighted it. There's two articles, one by Colette and one by Jim, that I will be using as sources.

My paper's on horror video games and how they are the leading innovators in the genre of horror related works. It'll mainly be a description and explanation of how several different horror video games work. My professor said to use no more than five examples; it's only a ten page paper. Right now I am definitely using Silent Hill 2, the F.E.A.R. series (I'm counting both as one example), and Dead Space. I'm trying to get very varied games as examples, so I'm not too sure if I have room to put in a PS1 era Resident Evil, since I have a Silent Hill game and Dead Space, which is basically RE5 when you think about it. Dead Rising and Left 4 Dead are both strong possibilities; the whole B-movie veneer is interesting. In fact, I think I'm going to use Left 4 Dead; since it trivializes zombies to a larger extent.

So I have one spot open. Let's se what I have covered in the crazy genre of horror games.
- Silent Hill 2: classic horror, probably the best example of horror video games ever.
- F.E.A.R. series: the oddball of the group. This game is survival horror on a totally different dimension, it's a great example of how horror has evolved in games.
- Dead Space: a unique amalgamation of traditional clunkiness and sleek modern elements. It's gameplay and mechanics are very third-person shooter-esque, yet stiff and sluggish. I think it's a fine example of a modern horror game.
- Left 4 Dead: my B-movie example. It appears laughable and so ridiculous it's funny at first, but upon further analysis, it's pretty freaky. A combination of near-casual-ish simple gameplay with enough complexity to entice hardcore players, the result is a game that makes you smile while getting under your skin and makes you strategize while at your job because you just know that there's an easier way to get past the corn field in Blood Harvest.
- ?

So, any suggestions? Remember, a horror game that is as far away as the four above would be much appreciated.

I don't necessarily know how far away this is, but Galerians is a good example of how to build a powerful protagonist, yet continue to instill fear though use of the environments and character designs. Also, making the characters greatest strength the greatest fear.

I think Eternal Darkness might be the best one to use here(as much as I'd want you to use Galerians). Just, the way that the sanity meter plays with you and distorts what the game portrays to you...
I gotta finish that sometime...

Fatal Frame, all the games you have mentioned allow you to use guns to defend yourself. In Fatal Frame you get a camera and that's it. I think another interesting one is Siren, where you play through as several characters and I'm not sure that you get a weapon for all of them. Sometimes you are really just running and hiding, which I think instills more fear and terror than being a gun toting mercenary on a mission.

Check this out. IIRC it is about how the zombies reflect the mindset of the time. He talks about it. I'm not sure if he says were he is getting this from, but its some cool thoughts.

What about Resident Evil 4 or something from the fatal frame series, or Siren. Those are all horror games. Siren is actually really kool, its got the film grain and the look of a Japanese horror movie. Really dark lighting and has a very ominous, depressing atmosphere. That's about all I can think of right now, Good Luck.

Probably a little too late, but how about Jurassic Park for the SNES? You could use my c-blog as a reference. >_>

Don't forget to include games that emphasize psychological horror, like Silent Hill or Dementium.
