Hello everyone,
My internet name is goodgamer77, and I have a problem. You see, I've been playing video games since my parents were concerned that the baby fat permeating my carcass had not began to wane yet. I am an enthusiast of the hobby, yet I don't come from the wealthiest of backgrounds. This naturally limited my ability to play all of the newest games for the majority of my life. My entire Christmas list would consist of one console almost every 4 years on the dot. I got the NES, the SNES, the N64, and the Xbox the year they released with one game each and that was my whole Christmas. Eventually, when I was older, I began collecting cheap consoles from my shattered past to round out my gaming experience. I got a Genesis after I got my N64, a Playstation 1 after my Xbox, and so on.
Now that I am older with my own bills, I suffer from much the same thing. I worked for 8 months and made bi-weekly payments to EB so that I could get a 360 on release day. Now though, because I cannot afford $60 discs of joy all the time, I am turning to a last-gen offering to appease my cheap gaming needs, and also to catch up on many missed opportunities. That console is the Playstation 2.
An old Penny-Arcade post comes to mind:
"The difference, of course, is that everyone owns a Playstation 2. I myself have owned five different PS2s - you can't seriously follow this hobby without access to one. The original Xbox can't claim the same kind of ubiquity, and it is reasonable to assert that even a person who takes gaming seriously might not have owned one. They would have missed out on certain things, of course, but they were completely buried under quality product for years. Even after 'the last great game for the Playstation 2' has been released, must-have titles still alight on those supple boughs - boughs that flex with the weight of ripe fruit."
I do consider myself an enthusiast of the medium, but sadly, my choice did not align with St. Tycho's opinion. I do not regret my choice, as hundreds of Halo and Splinter Cell LAN's can attest to, but now I feel as if it is time to venture into this dark world of Sony territory. I am not ashamed to say that I am frightened. I know of many titles that I heard were good, but I want to play them for myself. I call upon you, O vast D-toid community, help this poor soul by giving your favorite PS2 titles (aside from MGS) that I absolutely MUST PLAY!

also, Shadow of the Colossus
So like I said, I finally picked up a PS3. I still prefer my roommates Xbox, but we're living together for a while so I figured I would grab a different console for now. (fortunately I can afford to spend a decent amount on gaming)
I don't have a huge list for you, since I haven't played much. Shadow of the Colossus was badass. I am in the middle of Odin Sphere, and it's very pretty, but I'm having trouble staying interested in it. If you like rhythm games, go do yourself a favor and get Amplitude. You will hate it until you get the hang of it, then love it. It's even fun in multiplayer(if your friends are equally skilled)
Other than that, I'll be back to find out what games I missed while I was busy playing a remake of Resident Evil on the Gamecube.
It's been a struggle dealing with not having Okami, FFVII, FFX and the God of War games but i've managed.
Personally, i'm just going ot buy a PS3 once the price has gone down a bit and more games are out that actually use the amazing hardware within it.
Still, those games i mentioned above i reckon would be must plays as are Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.
I also never owned a PS2. You are not alone.
But I borrowed one from a friend once. In that time, I enjoyed the Jak series, Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy 10. I've heard though that Ico, Shadow of the Colossus (sp?), and Okami are really great too.
I also recommend the Sly Cooper series, Blood Will Tell, Dragon Quest 8 and Shadow Hearts. There's more but I just can't dig them all out.
RPG - Final Fantasy X is a must play, Rogue Galaxy is a GORGEOUS game but doesn't have much replay value after you beat it and complete the 100 floor dungeon post-game. (yes 100 floors)
Adventure - God of War and GOW 2 are worth the play for sure. The revival of the Castlevania series also are good fun games to play. Gun is a game that got a lot of press and was as good as it said, but it doesn't have ANY replay value once you beat the game and get 100% unless you like riding and running around shooting people and getting into fights with mobs.
Fighting/Wrestling - Def Jam Fight for NY was a decently fun game, not the most intuitive but it's definitely fun to create and edit your character. And if you hate rap, here's a plus, you get to beat the shit outta rap artists galore. Guilty Gear X and X2 are good as well. And then there's the Smackdown .v. Raw series and UFC Sudden Impact (yes, it's the ONLY good UFC OR PRIDE game.)
Racing - Need for Speed Underground 2, and NFS Carbon I don't need to say anything more.
Puzzle/Rhythm game - Fantavision, Amplitude, Guitar Hero
Sports - Too easy, I'm not even gonna go there.
Misc - Any of the Ace Combat series
I myself only acquired a PS2 within the last year, and have been working steadily through Final Fantasy VII. Its pretty damn good, and if you're into RPGs its worth it.
PSOne games are compatible with the PS2.
Final Fantasy VII (PSOne)
Final Fantasy X (PS2)
Final Fantasy XII (PS2)
Okami (PS2)
God Hand (PS2)
Viewtiful Joe (PS2)
Chrono Cross (PSOne)
Final Fantasy Chronicles (PSOnejust for Chrono Trigger)
Shadow of the Colossus (PS2)
Dragon Quest (PS2)
Killer 7 (PS2)
Odin Sphere (PS2)
Persona 3 (PS2)
The Rachet and Clank Series (PS2)
All of which are highly recommended, especially Okami (WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR, QUIT READING AND GO PLAY!)
SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS
it's fairly short, but good god is it awesome.
When I figured out you could hit the bones on top of the head of the one colossus to steer it, my hair caught on fire. PURPLE FUCKING FIRE!
The Maximo games are great also if you were ever into the Ghosts N' Goblins series.
