It's strange the reaction that people have to finding out that your console died. If this had been a PS2 there might have been a wry chuckle or a few suggestions of where to pick up a new one cheap. Maybe even someone who knew another guy who got his laser replaced or something. With the 360 it's like joining a club. Like Alcoholics Anonymous. Or maybe it's more like being dumped and heading out with your mates, with everyone saying how great you are, how easy it is to find a replacement and how great it's going to be now that you've got a chance to hang out more.
It's quite a nice feeling actually. There was always an air of anticipation, thanks to the frequency of these breakdowns, that my console would die after a long time and I'd lose loads of stuff. Having it all over and done with means I can walk into a room, stand up and say "Yes, my 360 died, but I'm ok.", see the knowing nods, the frustration and know, first hand, that I'm there with them.
Just a little note of thanks to all on here who came bearing advice, support and humour. It's always appreciated. I've now tried everything up to and including the "Towel trick" but to no avail. It's cool; I'm sure MS have a great system in place seeing they must be so used to it!
In the meantime, I'll swap horror stories of console shutdowns with my friends (some of whom are on their 5th or 6th repairs - I hang with a hardcore bunch of gamers!) and get back onto all those games I've been ignoring.
And looking forward to all the goodness ahead!
Thanks to brainderailment for the texture I used for the t-shirt
Thanks Tristero and Prof Pew, always there to help a guy back onto his feet. ;)
I am on my third PS Double (Launch one stopped playing Blue Backs and DVDs, second was used from EB, died after a month.)
My first Wii, but I havent even turned it on since mario party 8
My FIRST Dreamcast!
My Second NES (top loader)
My first SNES
My Second Genesis
And like my fourth computer. That is because of upgrades though.
Fourth was a charm for me, I hope it is for you too.
You've had a lot of bad luck with your PS2s there! My original (launch) PS2 lasted through several drops, spillages and kid-tantrums (I love my friends' kids but they don't know how to take care of my babies!) and my second is down in my front room at the moment, set up for some 3rd Strike action!
I haven't killed a PC since I was a kid messing around with my first overclocking project. My level of knowledge back then was much less than the amount of voltage pumping through my chip. =)

I would never say that anyone should NOT get a 360. The selection of games and incredibly easy access multiplayer just makes it worth it. You just have to keep a close eye on your warranty. Remember, MS have now extended the base warranty of 360s with the red-ring problem to 3 Years! I'm still not particularly happy with that but if it keeps on going I have a feeling they're going to start replacing the defective parts with new, higher-standard ones. That'll be cheaper than keeping on with the repair scheme they have running at the moment! Always cheaper to pay for getting the problem sorted once than continuing to pay over and over and over for the next 3 years!
I liked my Nes. Had more than a passing acquaintanceship with my Snes, and hung out with my Genesis when no one else was available. My PS1 and I were pretty steady for a while, and my Xbox was like a cousin to me.
But when my 360 met that red-ring-y end, I knelt and wept like Antony over Caesar's corpse.
Do you know how bright it is outside? My eyes..
If I had read this a few days ago, I would've totally agreed with you, being another first generation 360 owner myself... that is, until I joined the club mentioned above. Yes, my 360, that had served me well since November-December 2005 finally quit out on me. I'd saved Oblivion, turned it off, and gone to eat dinner like I'd done countless times before, but when I came back.... BAM, Red Ring of Death.
