I've translated the summaries of reviews for
Assassin's Creed from Jeuxvideo.com and Gamekult.com. Jeuxvideo gave it an 18/20 and Gamekult an 8/10. The review in Jeuxvideo.com makes this weird kid analogy.

Graphics: 18/20
Each of the three cities offers a unique architecture and is chock-full of details that bestow each of them with a strong identity; effectively verging on the limits of reconstruction, they burst with life. As for the animations for Altair, they adapt themselves perfectly to the environment, and it's a marvel. Even so, it's a shame about the numerous collision bugs and the sickly framerate on the PS3.
Playability: 17/20
Once again, Ubisoft Montreal works wonders in the control department. Moving Altaïr around is not only simplicity itself, it is besides that a true joy. The only snag remains that of the redundancy in the gameplay or of hindrances (such as the random beggars) that can become downright irritating.
SFX and Music: 18/20
Assassin's Creed serves up a few grandiose theme music tracks as well as some more discreet ambient tracks. The cities are ringing with a layer of sound effects composed of the yelling of the merchants, religious chanting and preachers of the apocalypse.
Story: 16/20
If you think the script has already let its secrets get filtered through, you're wrong.
Assassin's Creed mixes past and present in a well-conceived plot. And readers of the
Dune novels should be into it.
Overall Grade: 18/20
Before typing up this article, I had resolved to take off a point from the final grade to punish some failings of which certain ones are, one must admit, pretty annoying. A little too repetitive in its progression, a difficult to read map, some irritating quests, an AI that's just a hair too irascible:
Assassin's Creed isn't perfect. But it's like a little kid that's so cute that you can't tell them off when they get jam all over your clean white shirt. Magnificent, epic, immersive, captivating, this first outing of a new franchise has too many good points and too much character for one to have the nerve to punish it. And well, 17 or 18, honestly, it's nothing to make a fuss over, it's a hit and that's that.
Gamekult.com
8/10
Weak in certain aspects,
Assassin's Creed undoubtedly does not reach perfection. Some discrepancies in the guards' A.I., a repetitive gameplay mechanic and a not very well used scenario are some of the flat notes that play against it. But for all that, how can we resist the agility, the fluidity, the classiness of its hero who is capable of gliding so freely in its immense and convincing cities. How can we not salute the intuitiveness and the ease in the controls that make the adventure as nice to play as it is to look at. Some will undoubtedly struggle with an enormously open-ended game that still sometimes greatly restricts the player, and that's understandable. But the experience it offers won't be any less captivating and engaging for those who know to focus on its unquestionable strong points and come to a come to a compromise with its youthful faults. Although imperfect, Assassin's Creed is unquestionably one of the most outstanding gaming experiences of the year.
