Fable 2 Co-op patch
ghoti | 9:09 AM on 10.06.2008 16 comments

I'm getting increasingly irritated by the argument that because the Fable 2 co-op patch will be ready within a week of the game being released, that means they should be able to put it on the disc instead of releasing it as DLC.

Does anybody happen to know how long it'll take to manufacture, check and ship out the hundreds of thousands of discs required for the Fable 2 launch? I'm guessing it would be a couple of weeks at the minimum, and I'm pretty sure they'll have already started the process so that they can get the game in stores before the street date.

Now, I'm sure that Lionhead could put the co-op code onto the disc in its current state, but I'd much rather the developers have an extra couple of weeks to polish the code and deliver the multiplayer a week after the game ships than rush a half-finished version out the door with the discs, and then have to patch it in a week anyway to make it playable.

Am I the only one?

Since it's gone gold the pressing has already started and they can't change anything at this point, right? They probably decided on this so they wouldn't have to push the release date back.

Welcome to what happened to Fable 1. Promises that they can't keep. I was really looking forward to Fable 2, but with all the promises they keep saying and now co-op is gone kills it.

Fable 1 was supposed to be awesome and only turned out to be decent.

If you're really irritated by this do what I do, buy the game later. Send the message 'Incomplete game will not be bought', maybe they'll release a lost chapters version, actually does everything it says on the back of the case.
Of course lionhead (or other developers guilty of this) will never get the message as most gamers have too much money/impatience.
I'm still peeved that dungeon keeper 2 online play was buggy. I have patience Molyneux, I will have my revenge.

@snotrocket

Co-op is not "gone". It will be in there within a week...for free. Did you really plan on playing this game (which is ultimately designed to be a single player game) through co-op from day 1?

@Nicojay - I think you missed my point. I'm saying I don't think it's a big deal that the multiplayer is coming later.

Frankly, I'm not buying Fable 2 as a multiplayer experience, and I think I'd rather some time to get to know the world, the locations and beef my guy up a little before striking out on any quests with mates online.

Is this a different company than the one that said Fable 1 was going to have co-op? That said the game was feature-complete at E3? That failed to get even cheap cardboard trinkets for their LE package? Real growing trees? This is about how sure I am about a co-op patch the first week.

Like anyone's slacker friend that never remembers to bring the beer, shows up late, or forgets their wallet whenever it's time for a pizza, Lionhead can prove they're not completely full of shit when they actually deliver. There's way too many awesome looking games right now for me to drop $60 on a promise of my favorite feature being added later.

All I know is that I can't wait for this game :).

Guess what, im a Fable fan boy.

Guess how much it bothers me.

Not at all.

Ask me why.

Because of this they wont be pushing the release date back. They couldn't "Just put it on the disk" at this point. So instead of whining deal with it for 7 days of your whole life and enjoy it after.
Aurain's Destructoid Blog
Co-op not being on the disk should be a nail in Molyneux's career. If it's not part of the disk version of the game, it's not in the game, therefore claiming it's coming later doesn't cut it. If you center your advertising campaign around Online Co-op, you better make sure it's in the game at release. It's like GTA4 saying, "Free-roam is coming in a patch later kthxbye".

Seeing as it's an Xbox game also, does this mean HDD-less 360 consoles can't save the patch aswell ? If so, that's terrible.

Fable 2 could be the best game ever, It's review scores should be capped at 5/10 because half of the game isn't on the disk.
GuitarAtomik's Destructoid Blog
@Aurain

Really? Half the game? When did Fable 2 become the next Phantasy Star Online? Co-op is NOT as integral to this game as "free-roam" is to GTA. Not even close.

This is a SINGLE PLAYER GAME. The co-op is an extra thing. A lot of effort and time was put in to it which is why it's being shown off so much and why they're spending extra time to get it right, but it is by no means the central mechanic.

Also, if you don't have a memory card to download the patch or internet access to do that, then you probably weren't going to play the game online anyway.

All this does is make me want to get the game at or near release less.

@DarkSavior: If you don't have internet, how would you be be planning on playing [i]online co-op[i] anyway?

 about me

Originally from the middle of Northern Ireland, I moved to Belfast for university, then gave up after a year and a half and ended up working in a callcentre for an American insurance company - first taking insurance claims from often-irate customers, then moving to tech support after 18 months. When that ended I moved into a software testing role within the same company where I was slowly ground down into a shell of my former shadow before moving to Dundee to work in the videogames industry on super-secret things that I can't talk about.
