Oh The Too Humanity (Demo)
ghnvt | 3:11 PM on 07.19.2008 9 comments

I, as many of you have, played the recently released Too Human demo. My impressions could be stated in one word, meh! I didn't think it was terrible, but I definitely don't think it is a huge success. This game has been Dr. Dyack's science project for over ten years now and it is functional, but some of the design decisions seem to be a little quirky. I love the items and inventory systems along with the points system used in the skills tree. What I do not like is the unresponsive controls. It seemed to me that, as a champion, you pushed the Right Stick to the direction of the enemy. This was about the only instructions that you got during the entire demo. It seemed like Dr. Dyack decided to get this demo out ASAP and didn't give the team enough time to polish it up. As for the the story, I was completely confused and didn't really pay too much attention to it. Overall I would say that the game functions and could be fun for the Diablo, Kill it, Loot It crowd, which includes me. I think what is going to hold everyone back from crowning this game is the repetitiveness of the combat, which in other games like hampers most brawlers. I hope Dr. Dyack tries to keep the "social experiments" of Neogaf to a minimum in the next few months as the SK teams tweak and playtest Too Human before it goes Gold, sometime soon.

As for Dr. Dyack's recent apologies and comments on the Neogaf debacle, I would say, "Dr. Dyack, I understand what you were trying to do, but you might want to be a little more upfront about what you are trying to achieve." Also, I would recommend not doing it so soon to your games release. I will probably pick up this game when the price drops a little bit because I am not going to drop 60 bucks on it. Let me know what everyone else thinks about the demo if you tried it.

I thought the demo itself was decently fun, albeit a bit on the shallow side. The other classes seem pretty interesting, and multiplayer could be fun. But the combat system is what is holding me back from buying this game.

I literally played through the fights with one hand on the controller, behind my back.

Played it the other day. Havn't gone back to it.

That might say a lot about this game but i totally agree with what you said above.

I'm still on the fence as to whether or not to buy this game and the demo didn't help me out much.

Still, depending on what's out around the same time and what my money situation is like, i might still purchase it.

My friend has been telling everyone that the demo was dreadful, so though I had downloaded it, I had no desire to play it. Earlier today I was bored so put it on...and was plesantly surprised.

I've never had any interest in Too Human, I 've read a few articles, but after playing it, I actually want it. I wont buy it right away, but I never buy any game until it's been out for a while (ok a few exceptions)

I thought the item screen was a bit cumbersome in that it was quite slow to cycle through the different options, but the game itself I found strangly addictive, and found myself wanting more when the demo ended.

I was eagerly hoping this game would be a more sophisticated version of the Gauntlet Legends games, but with the experience remaining similar: fun.

I was (sadly) disappointed.

The controls and camera were annoying, but I probably could have lived with them if the overall mechanics and design were better.
The combat mechanics were lacking depth and too slow-paced for my tastes, making the unusual control scheme all the more unenjoyable.

The right control stick shouldn't be used as combat controls. And the camera was really bad...pretty much repeating what Heretic said.

It was more fun the second time i played through it. I also played the second time with the berzerker, which is way more fun. It takes about 5 seconds on the internet to find out how to do it, and thats a way more fun class.

I enjoyed it, I'm gonna get it.

I personally prefered the game when I played as the Defender. The Champion sucks on it hard.
