About Me
Much to my family's disappointment after I got my Psych degree I moved into journalism. At the moment I do games and anime reviews for a free magazine in Sydney which no one reads. I also work casually as a research assistant but that isn't interesting.
I've been gaming since I was a wee lad and as I recall the first console I had was the Atari 2600. Pitfall 2 on the C64 amazed me and at the time I thought it was the deepest games would ever get.

I'm a big SRPG/RPG fan but I also have an itchy trigger finger so FPSes are on the cards to.
I have a weak spot for survival horror but I suck at them. The newer survival horror action games (RE4) are right up my alley.
Also big fan of Clover studios and Capcom in general.

Right now I've got a 360, Ps2, Saturn, cube(for imports) and Wii set up and I've also got a PSP & DS.

The 'I can't believe I almost didn't buy that' Games

Everyone has to have one (or in my case many) game that they've picked up looked at and put back on the shelf a thousand times. Then on that one day of weakness have bought it, taken it home and been blown away.

Xbox 360:
Call of Juarez. Even though it has a shakey start this game captures the wild west feel better than any other game. It is also pistol centric which is a very good thing in my book (lots of pistols in other words). Lots of really nice touches like distortions on the sniper lens. Loveable characters, a cool postgame & good gunplay. Plus the bible is a weapon. Bonus.

Earth Defense Force 2017: Don't think I need to say anything about this one.

Lost Planet: Pure arcade action. I loved this game to bits though it got a few bad reviews.

Cube:
RE4: Even though everyone praised the hell out of it I was a bit skeptical. I hated the control scheme of the originals. Eventually I gave in and paid a whopping 120 for the special edition alongside Jak 3. I expected to go home and play Jak 3 all night, instead it was a few weeks before I even got to Jak.

Tales of Symphonia: I was quite sick for a while, like coma sick. When I eventually came out of it my girlfriend took me to get a game and against my better judgement I picked up Tales of Symphonia (which had just come out). Three playthroughs later I'm glad I did.

PS2:
Pro Evo Soccer 4: Ever since my parents forced me to play when I was a kid I've hated soccer. I can't imagine what made me pick this up in the first place. I'm glad I did though.

God Hand: Hmmm... review says that most people won't like it... I did like Clovers other games though. I guess I'll give it a try. Now it's my third favourite game ever.

There are heaps more, I'd have to have a good look at my collection though.

I just picked up EDF2017 today. I could barely put it down o_o

Call of Juarez - Does it really get better? I played the demo and wasn't really blown away.

@Mister Disco: I really dug it towards the end. It won't revolutionize gaming but it has a good feel.

@Chaosye: That is what makes it so lovable isn't it :)

earth defense is an achievement in its own right. after completing that game on easy i needed like a year long breather. I will not only applaud anyone who gets all the way through that game i will give them my soul. On topic though geoffuws you might be upset to hear that i spent a good 3 years looking for disgaea and when i finally got it i didn't really get interested in it. :[ so that was kind of an opposite of this blog post but i figured i'd share my story :] long story short i played too much FFT and FFTA in my life and the battle system sadly was too much for my meager mind to handle. :[

I'd always seen like, 20 used copies in stores and assumed there was a reason so many people were dumping it. Finally picked up after Destructoid reviewed it for the Bargain Bin Laden column and damn. Far from the most amazing game ever, but still pretty damn cool. Loved the graphics and the music, man! An FPS with a jazz soundtrack. That and Adam Weeeeeeeeest!

Harvest Moon 64 is my all time favorite "cooling off" game when I get mad or depressed and need to waste some time. :)

Almost ten years ago I bought Fighting Force (PC version) but when I tried it on my computer it didn't work because of my crappy graphic card. So I went to the shop and changed it for a Final Fantasy VII (PC version)... probably the best change I've ever made.

I would have to say Psychonauts. It's nowhere near the type of game I usually enjoy. Because I frequent game sites like Destructoid here, I kept reading more and more good things about it. So on a whim I went ahead and picked it up. I absolutely loved every second of that game.

Also, Morrowind GOTY edition for Xbox. I had never really played any PC rpg, but this was another game I kept hearing good things about. I didn't pick it up until later on in the Xbox's life, at about $15. I've since spent probably close to 5, 600 hours on it. It also got me to buy Oblivion on the day of release, and buy the PC version of Morrowind to try the mods.

Star Ocean: The Second Story is one of my favorite games. I was hesitant to buy it because I didn't have a job at the time, but it was the best $20 I had ever spent. I just wished I could find it again.

@16bitmonster: I'm actually a bigger La Pucelle & Shining Force Fan than Disgaea. I think I'm the only person in the world who prefers La Pucelle to Disgaea

EDF was good fun, but i'm not sure i'd want to play through it 5 more times to get all the achievement points. and Tales of Symphonia was one of the more addicting games this side of the planet. i still have to force myself into replaying it, but i'm not sure what i really want to invest my GRADE in.

FREAKIN' ICO!!! I rented it initially and, when I'd finished it I gave it back. Then I saw it, mint condition, limited edition boxed set, £10 ($5). AND I DIDN'T FREAKIN' BUY IT BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT'D BE THAT EASY TO FIND FOREVER!!!

Took me 3 years and some serious ebaying to get a copy for full price but it now has pride of place on my shelf, art cards and all.

Disgaea, funny i knew what it was, figured it would be cool, but convinced my youngest brother to buy it, when he was real bored over a one summer.... I now have to see if i can get all of Nipon Ichi's magic. Its a shame "Soul Nomad..." is a NTSC release only, but yeah. Makai kingdom is AWESOME... and Soul Nomad...

oh crap .. just looked up the list of their releases....

time to break open the piggy bank.........

Speaking of video games in the western-shooter genre, I just picked up Red Dead Revolver for the Xbox the other day for 5 bucks and that game is pretty awesome. I'm really shocked at how fun and original it is.
I've been trying to stock up on some original Xbox titles before the hard copies go extinct and we have to download them all for $15.

Also, picked up Jade Empire. Very awesome as well. I missed some cool games being a PS2 only gamer last generation. I also found out that us PS2 gamers had been getting royally screwed with our Tom Clancy games.

Beyond Good and Evil. Stared at the X-Box box for a good month before I finally caved. I loved it so much, when I found it for PC for $20 a year later, I bought it for PC again, along with Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (also a repurchase).

Quite appropriately, given your Avatar and Blog header, Disgaea 2. Impulse buy which I nearly regretted, till about 2 seconds after playing it, and then i fell in love with it.

Zelda 64 -- I was coming down from my whole 'SEGA is God' thing ... Zleda had no jump button, too much talking and it looked stupid. I bought it from EB so I had 24 hours to return it. After two hours I loved it. It's now eaisly my favourite game of all time.

Xenogears for me. At that time I was only getting into RPGs and I think Gamepro had a good small little walkthrough on it. Being interested (and it had mechs...I'm hooked already.) I decided to buy it over wanting Guilty Gear. So I got it.

about 5-6 years later the game's rare as hell and rereleased. Little did I know this great game was going to that status.

i'm sure there's a few more I didn't almost buy. I feared I wouldn't find a Katamari Damacy when I went looking for it. but to no avail I did.

Super Baseball 2020 for the SNES. I haven't met anyone who has played it but that game was a top 3 SNES game for me. You played baseball with robots while wearing jetpacks and you could use earned money to upgrade specific players attributes. Plus the best team in the game was an all skimpy-outfit (for SNES anyway) girl's team.

btw, awesome blog post.
