Why the PSPgo is good news for Canadians (shortblog)
garison | 1:51 PM on 06.25.2009 19 comments

Everyone is talking about the PSPgo, the slide up screen, the internal memory, and of course the lack of UMD drive along with its digital distribution exclusivity.

All that stuff is cool (I guess), but I'm excited for what digital distribution will bring to Canadians. So far, PSN prepaid cards are not available to buy in stores in countries like Canada and Australia, so if Sony really wants their new PSP to succeed, they better get to bringing prepaid cards around the world.

This is especially frustrating for me, as I pretty much got my credit card to spend money on downloadable games. So far my credit card works on the Wii download service, Xbox Live Arcade, but for some reason not on PSN. I've tried friends cards and they work just fine, but some reason PSN just doesn't like mine :(

And there is a ton of kids and with PSPs who aren't old enough to get a Mastercard to use for downloadable games. If Sony is really trying to get digital distribution into the mainstream, they better do something about this before the new PSP launches. There is probably going to be a shit ton of kids going out to buy the new version when it is released.

Will Sony (hopefully) bringing PSN cards to other countries be good news for you?

... they actually do carry the PSN cards in Canada now... I saw them at my local Walmart the other day! :)

What's your credit card number? Maybe I could make it work for PSN.

Seriously though, I thought Sony liked money. Canada/Australia=decent market.

Yeah I got 2 PSN Cards last week!! EB/Gamestop have just started carrying them. That's why I'm all for the PSP Go.

Looks like you're in luck, Garison! As for me, I'm excited because the rise in psn cards from other regions means importing psn games will become easier as well. I would have bought Outrun HD day one, but there was no US release. The PSP GO would be a no-brainer for me if it wasn't so steeply priced, but I like the changes it's bringing about.

etirflita, I agree the Go mind bendingly overpriced, but all the "changes it's bring" will be just as easily available on the older models. The digital distribution is not exclusive to the Go. Just stick with your 3000, or whichever flavour you already have, slap in a large memory stick, and your all set.

Tyke: I was actually referring to the changes in the mindset of the industry as well as the availability of psn cards (due to their necessity in order to sell the downloadable only psp games), but good point on the memory stick solution, 16 gig sticks aren't hard to come by and are easily swapped out. I'm still on a 1000 model and wouldn't mind an aesthetic upgrade as well, though. (At this point, I'm wondering how long it will be before Sony announces an actual Psp2 with even more compatibility with the ps3 and all the controller functions that are desired)

Actually Canada does offer PSN cards now, as someone on the PS3 from Dtoid was excited they had appeared. I'm pretty sure someone blogged about it to (I forget).

Also, do you wana add me garison pretty please? :) I sent a request about a month ago and got no reply, PSN's Gladiator_21 (I wish we could change our PSN names :( )

@Zippyduda: I never go on my PSN, so your friend request is probably still on my console. I'll add you though :D

@Kraid: Ya, I always just use my regular address, but I'll try your silly one :)

I don't have a problem with PSN and my credit card.

@The tyke
Exactly : I don't see anything the current psp can't do that the pspGo will. For those who "don't" have a psp though, it can be a good deal. A psp 3000 + a 16 go memory stick = More than the PspGo.

@Garison

Yeah, Sony is quite picky when it comes to your CC information. Try everything. Like All-Caps (worked with my moms CC) and what Kraid said (I see that didn't work.) Hope that works. Otherwise, try to find those PSN cards. They've just started that in Canada so pretty soon they will be all over the place.

Thanks for the tips, Takeshi. I tried fucking EVERYTHING, I even stayed on the phone with the credit card company, and then on the phone with Sony for over an hour. >:( But nothing would work.

I'm just happy that the cards are finally coming here.

Pixeljunk, Fat Princess, Final Fantasy VII, and everthing else on the PSN here I come!!!
