If really irks me when guys like
IGN, and
GameFAQs make top (insert # here) best videogames of all time lists. How is it possible to pick just
one game of all time, and put
x number of games in subsequent order of quality?
Videogames aren't like a a group of high school kids being graded in a math test where each student is being marked on the exact same things. You can't really compare videogames to each other in terms of quality because, well, they are all different from each other.
In GameFAQs' currently going on "
Best. Game. Ever." contest thing, it's come down to
Ocarina of Time, and
Final Fantasy VII. Both games are completely different from each other, while
Zelda is an action adventure(?) game,
FFVII would be a classic turn based RPG. Both games have different things going for and against them, and they both do different things for their own genres, so why compare them?
Is it just that people are always searching for order and classification? Why can't a really good game, just be a really good game? Take
Super Mario Bros. and
Super Mario Galaxy for example. I would consider them both very good games, but is one really
better than the other one? I think that some people might like one more than the other, it would be impossible to choose which one is actually the
better game.
What do you guys think, are "best videogames ever" lists worth our time as gamers, or are they just a big pile of horse shit?
1. It is absolutely subjective
2. Final Fantasy VII and Ocarina of Time will always be on top even when much better titles existed
3. I almost have never seen Beyond Good & Evil, Grim Fandango, EarthBound or even Gunstar Heroes being in a list.
They are just included so people still fall that the site actually cares about games when they actually put Halo 2 on #10 out of 100. Totally better than Half-Life 2 yeah
Period.
I can still enjoy personalized, "My 10 favorite game characters" or "8 RPG's to play before you die" type of stories that don't claim to be the end all decision, but I wouldn't mind if gamesites would quit pretending that regurgitating the fact that many people enjoy Final Fantasy and Zelda makes for a good story.
The main reason they should die I think is to erase some of the inane moaning that comes out of these things. It totally doesn't matter why Goldeneye was two points ahead of *insert favourite Mario game* in a list of what is essentially fapservice, but time and again, this kind of rambling has to be endured.
Which do you prefer? ;P
What could possibly be better then a game, based on a movie, based on a game, that was NEVER ACTUALLY FILMED! There ya go. All lists are forever worthless. You have your #1 game of all time!
DEBATABLE
/retrose tinted
take that
Also, they offer really good fodder for people to discuss (or flame and argue over) in the comments which is good for bloggers paid on a comment basis.
though I do wish they'd stop this. Along with that "character battle" shit. It's literally a slap in the face to many gamers.
I've noticed that most of the daily top ten lists on that site are rather old, or maybe it's just me.
I've never even understood how Link is a good character >.< He doesn't speak, has no personality other then heroism (although you gotta love Wind Waker Link's expressions) and the only thing he has going for him is an icon, but by that token Mario and Sonic are great charecters as well :P
You know what's incredibly subjective, and automatically will generate hits? Top tens. Just ask Games Radar.
Boo doom chhh
Then again, neither do blogs that we write and post here for people that don't know us and likely don't care to read about what we think about different subject matters...
But what the hell, list never hurt anyone. They tend to be interesting when getting to know someone.
Just so we're clear, that second paragraph wasn't a shot at any specific person or party here, just at the irony that we are discussing the meaninglessness of lists in a blog.
Use that next time magnalon.
And for a best game ever to made 2 things need to happen.
Games have to stop being made.
Everyone MUST pick that one game.
Neither of which will ever happen.
So count me in the horseshit pile.
So, in short I guess I should of said, "I agree conditionally!"
As a Zelda kid I am forced to give you a decent explanation.
Link is mute, self determined and strong. We love it for being adventurous and brave, but most importantly, it easily shares our body on taking his role solving puzzles, slaying Dinolfos and collecting rupees.
It's a great character because we get easily fused with that character.
However I can't disagree the Hero of Winds is fucking amazing.
FUCK YES TOON LINK!
Then we all had a talk about it. We concluded OOT would win anyway (or FF7) even if we didn't want them to (we all love them but would rather have other games win that we talked about).
If they do the best game ever sort of thing again, they need to do it by genre. Or at least time frame. A "best game of 200X" voting thing would be much more interesting and wouldn't be as confusing as trying to compare an NES game to a new game.
