Expensive videogame consoles, do ppl really care?
garison | 9:31 PM on 11.06.2008 13 comments

With the (kind of) recent price drop of the Xbox 360, it got me thinking about the price of video game consoles in general, and if most people really care about how much they are paying for their videogames.

Example 1: My neighbors are basically one of the poorest families in our neighborhood. Both of the parents are unemployed (most of the time) and they have four kids, each about 2 years away from each other, so you get the picture. But when the PlayStation 3 came out in Nov. of '06, they were the first people that I know that had one. But they didn't get the cheapest version, they got the most EXPENSIVE 80 GB version with 3 controllers, and like three or four games. And when RockBand came out, they were also some of the first people that I know to get. it.

Example 2: There is a 14 year old girl in my town who owns an Xbox 360 Elite. I have no effing idea WHY she would spend the extra dollars and get an elite, so when I asked her, she said "because I wanted it" and then laughed maniacally.

Does this make sense to anyone? Or am I just rambling about nothing here?

Yes, I think people care. However, even the poorest of people do their best to provide themselves with at least some form of entertainment in their lives. In the case of your neighbors, I'd say video games are considered important to them.

Just how they managed to afford such things when both are mostly unemployed is another topic of discussion, and I'll leave it as such.

I just hope that somehow, games are bringing each of them joy. That's what it's all about, right?

The real question is why should you worry yourself about what someone chooses to spend their money on.

Responsible....no.

None of my damn business.....YES!

Senseless Ramble.......You bet.

I was going to post a meaningful and deep comment, but then I saw your black finger nail polish in your sidebar and barfed.

No, I'm kidding. Sort of...

People do care. I think the PS3's position in the market is proof of that and why the Wii is so damn popular. Do you think it would have been flying off the shelves if it was priced at $500?

Sure, the motion controls and "casual games" (AKA Mini game compilation abortions) played a big role, but it's price is what made it accessible.

People are bothered about the price of games, I spent 300 pounds on my PS3, knowing well that it would last me years.

On the other hand, if I spend 40 quid on a game, whos to say I wont trade it in after a very brief period of time? Not onlt did I pay a high price for the game,I wasted my money, and now have to use more money to buy other games I want.

Consoles are usually very long term investments, games on the other hand are'nt, that's the difference. I spent 300 quid on my PS3, but I think I spent more than that on games alone. I'm a bargain bin/ used games whore, rarely do I buy full priced games. :)

My favorite are the welfare deadbeats that cough up the $500 for the PS3 (instead of buying baby new clothes that fit) only to plug it into their 13 inch SDTV...
