You gotta admit though, Amano's character designs for FF9 are beautiful. But I feel the same way about Nomura, I didn't mind much in the beginning, and I like the basic design of his characters, but the costume design is just horrendous.
Also, nice drawing! I wish I had some artistic talent.
yeah, Amano's design is quite good (though a bit compromised because the PS1 can't render finer details). Nomura's earlier works (FFVIII) are interesting enough because they're simple compared to X and XIII.
oh, and thanks :)
That's a fantastic piece of art you created there garganroo.
Great job.
Honestly, it's still over my head as to why they'd get rid of a professional artist like Amano and bring in a complete novice like Nomura...
FFX's designs are one of the main reasons I refuse to play any more of it.
Range Murata or Yoshitoshi Abe?
I agree about Nomura. I would definitely support a 'new artist every time' approach. I'm not a huge fan of the naturalistic characters anyway. Give me some style!
i guess an informal petition wouldn't do. once people got sick of his flamboyant style, SE will replace him (or let him 'graduate' like other SE dev) with the new flavor of the decade.
again, nothing against Nomura. :)
yeah good job garganroo, very awesome artwork! I also think that Final Fantasy should have unique character designers and artists for each game, just to make each one feel more unique. However I do like Nomura's style well enough, especially for Kingdom Hearts.
I can't imagine how costly it would be if they decided to get a new artist every installment. But Square Enix makes so much as it is, I'm sure that it wouldn't heavily affect them. Plus a little variety wouldn't hurt the series, I think.
And you inked that entire thing? That's amazing.
Jack Maverick: There are other artists who work at Square Enix. Personally I'm of the opinion that they should choose a different artist every games, but from within the company. Give the youngsters a chance.
Cause Final Fantasy is pretty fucking stale these days.
Eventually sales will start to drop, people will bitch about it, and Square will take the series in a "new direction".
And by "new direction", I mean hire a new artist and keep everything else the same. Now I remember why I don't really play RPGs anymore.
thanks guys!
i think it wouldn't cost them more than what they pay for Nomura. And probably the next one after him will definitely try to copy his style, too.
the Mana series artist could possible revitalize FF; his design is fantastical, sure, but more organic.
Nothing against Nomura? Oh I've got plenty against him, like killing anything interesting coming out of Square (Enix). Good lord did you see what that bastard did to the characters in Dissidia? It's fucking vile. He needs to stick to stupid 3rd grader cool kids crap like KH and TWEWY and stay out of everything else.
I think Toriyama's stuff is better than Nomura, tbqh.
Watch out, Yojimbo is going to ask you to draw him a bearded samurai.
I like his art in highly specific settings. It fits in TWEWY, since the entire game is based around an outrageous fashion+confidence system set in fashion-savvy Shibuya. The style also fits in Kingdom Hearts, and say what you will about his character designs, but the style he brings to the non-Disney worlds in that game is fantastic - The World/Castle That Never Was is breathtaking in its aesthetics. However, when he brings that style into more "realistic" games, like Final Fantasy...it looks pretty ridiculous. It worked in FFVII well enough, but he got too much freedom after that game.
As for FFXII, I think the only Nomura-esque character was Vaan - every other person fit into the "Ivalice" style in some way.
@steel squirrel: my pleasure :)
@necros: true that his style fits more contemporary games, as his style (or his fashion sense) fits well with modern/cosplay-friendly games.
unless they're keeping nomura for sheer cosplay power alone. that'll be an interesting conspiracy.
i think the first kingdom hearts started out fresh (and quite balanced as well!), but when I started seeing more of those hooded figures, I began to wonder if nomura's given more control than he deserves. 3 games later, kingdom hearts may be devoid of anything disney (or, gasp, nomurafied disney characters)
