is building hype worth the raping?

so its no secret. lots of us enjoy left 4 dead. valve fans, fps fans, and hardcore gamers have all been chomping at the bit to get their dose of co-op zombie shooting. they've got the press eating out of their hands, the fan's clamoring over the demo, and clearly developers are taking note. i don't think Horde is a happy coincidence. I don't think the tacked on OMG Zombies (or whatever its called) in World at War is a happy coincidence either. both of these games are AAA titles, and will fall into the hands of lots of casual and hardcore gamers alike. while L4D may review incredibly (which it looks like it will), as a casual gamer, what motivation do you have to purchase this game when you have a game like world at war with a similar mode tacked on? probably not much.

so while hype is a great way to get people talking about your name. keeping it on the tip of thier tongue. getting the pre-order money from the hardcore, in this case it may have backfired. anyone else notice this? you think console sales of L4D will suffer because of it? should developers shorten their hype-cycle? letting the cat out of the bag a year or two before release may prove to be deadly in this case, and while L4D may have the AI director, i don't think the casual gamers will take note.

I dont know if I would agree on the Gears and Call of Duty. Gears is fun, but after campaign what more would you want to do with a friend or something? How about a wave after wave mode? Seems good. Its going back to Atari-esque routes of keep playing until you die. As for Call of Duty, Halo popularized a zombie game type a while back, and the same can be said for Half Life mods, etc, etc. Maybe Treyarch just though "lets do zombies" and decided to have that early on. I dont know much about video game design, but it took me two weeks to make pong in javascript. I think that designing the gametype, creating the models, and all of the work wouldn't have been a result of OMG LEFT 4 DED WILL BE AWESOME COPY PASTSA.

I dont think L4D will suffer. All games will be loved for their different things, and I think L4D will still thrive for being a 3D FPS zombie fest.

Well, I think a big enough hype train can get the attention of casual gamers, who I imagine can easily getinto left 4 Dead. There's isn't necessarily a lot of technical gameplay complexity in that game. You move, you shoot, you assist/button mash when the game tells you to, and you cooperate with other players. I think the simplicty of the concept can have major casual appeal.

I can imagine plenty of "casual gamers" that are not interested in World War 2 anymore being turned off by that on face alone ,and completely oblivious of the added Zombie Mmode). Meanwhile, a kid that reads Fantasmagora and has never played his brother's Xbox will pee his pants when he finds out what Left 4 Dead is all about.

IT DESERVES TO BE PRAISED! THOSE WHO DO NOT PRAISE IT WILL BE SMITTEN!

After actually playing through the demo, I must say I am not really impressed by it. The opening cinematic is awesome, but the game itself is sort of a clunky shooter with strange controls.
