i'm not one of those hand waving lunatics that thinks the iphone will bury the ds, but since i first played snake on my nokia candybar, i knew the handheld's we've grown accustomed to have their days numbered.
amd has
reported to have achieved OpenGL® ES 2.0 performance certification. this is based on the same unified shader technology that currently powers the xbox 360.
so as handsets come equipped with more and more storage, and more networks deliver solid 3G connections, we're just a few inches away from halo quality multiplayer on the go. now if only we could get a solid input device.
i think this is great news. i'm all for slimmer pockets, and with phones coming equipped with cameras, gps locators and accelerometers these days, i think the future of mobile gaming promises to bring some of the freshest, most unique experiences in the coming years.
so what ya think? will nintendo have to enter the mobile market to compete? will the market for handheld gaming devices become a niche so small that hardware mfgs give up completely and go the software route ala sega? are you ready to accept mobile gaming as your lord and savior?
Gaming with mobile phones does have one big problem though: If your battery runs out, you won't be able to use your phone anymore. And a mobile phone with an empty battery is as useful as a brick stone. (Note: This is the same problem the iphone has.)
I'm for GPSes in phones. So if you call 911 & cant tell them where you are they can still find you. But I'm not all for games. The cameras are also pretty useless imo. Their only really good for taking a pic of something unexpected. For times when you know youre going to be taking pics, nothing beats film.
Hopefully AMD or MS will have something to compete with Nintendo and Sony. I like the DS and all, but, I'm kinda ready for some portable Halo action, or something similar instead of raising Chihuahuas, cooking mama or kid stuff.
