The thought of voice actors in FF7 *shudders*
Honestly, when voicing acting became standard, I died a little that day. Just a little. But enough to make me wonder if I would ever see a major game developer/publisher release a text heavy game sans voice. I truly believe that the move to voice acting spelled the death of many potentially great games. JRPGs, in general, I feel were hit the hardest as budgets had to account for voice overs, which meant limiting story and such.
Anyway, went off on a tangent there. A remake of FF7 is a damned situation for Square to place themselves in. Personally, I have never blamed them for being reluctant at remaking it because it is such a overly "talked" about game. There are so many opinions surrounding the game that if Square made changes, the purists would revolt and say Square is pulling a George Lucas. If Square makes no changes, there would be those who say they are just trying to cash in on a lazy physical release and why bother. I mean there is really no good means for them to appease everyone. I agree with their move to keep it as a card up their sleeve until it would make sense to play that card, which in this case would be when the hype surrounding the game has mellowed and/or the series "ends".

Although this may not be what you technically mean by remake, FF7 is coming to the PC:

@JoeTheProYaKnow - Just imagine Nolan North voicing Cid! Seriously though I understand the concerns that go into such an undertaking. You gotta wonder though If they were able to put all the work they into XIII into a VII remake? It would be a great game. It is always going to have shortcomings, but I don't believe the majority of fans would expect perfection. Even FFVII had pretty major flaws upon release. Graphically even though for the time it was acceptable it was still not the best looking game. Grandia in many gamers eyes (my own included) was a much better looking game with the sprites and of course the anime cutscenes. That year was special. I miss the 90s :(
@Olo Nexus - I have high hopes for it, but I don't expect anything more than a proper port with HD res options. I want it still :D
