Keanu Reeves is Spike Spiegel... :(
free touch | 6:30 PM on 01.16.2009 20 comments

from hollywoodreporter.com Twentieth Century Fox is bringing the Japanese anime TV series "Cowboy Bebop" to the big screen, with Keanu Reeves attached to star as a bounty hunter traveling through space in 2071.

Reeves will be playing Spike Spiegel, a bounty hunter and former member of a crime syndicate. Spiegel, along with Jet Black, a fellow bounty hunter and former cop, are the two pilots of the spaceship Bebop.

Peter Craig is writing the script.

The show, which first aired on Tokyo TV and satcaster Wowow during the late 1990s, is strongly influenced by Jazz music (thus the "bebop").

Reeves' association with the project leaked in the summer when Fox and 3 Arts Entertainment began the process of acquiring the rights from Sunrise Studios.

Erwin Stoff, Reeves' longtime manager, is producing through 3 Arts. Joshua Long will serve as executive producer.

Sunrise president Kenji Uchida, the TV series' director of animation, Shinichiro Watanabe, and series writer Keiko Nobumoto will serve as associate producers. Series producer Masahiko Minami will serve as production consultant.
...

Although I'm thoroughly happy that Cowboy Bebop is coming to the silver screen in live format, and that the TV Series director and other producers from the original sunrise project are envolved in it.... Keanu Reeves... really? REALLY?

That...really disappoints me beyond everything.

How will Spike's snappy, sarcastic, apathetic mood be conveyed through Reeve's brick-wall acting D: D:

This is not the worst choice ever, and I think people will agree with that. But yeah, there goes any of Spikes' personality for the movie. Lets' hope they don't fail miserably in casting Ed or the others.

I think he'd be better cast as Ein.

They coulda made a worse choice by far. I'm not saying it was a good one but who knows? Maybe he will be able to show an emotion other then Confused.

This is terrible.
But I can`t think of a perfect actor for the role.

Funny thing is.... he was the only tolerable part of The Day The Earth Stood Still.

I still stand by my claim that Al Gore should have played Klaatu...

What is this actor you humans call "Keanu Reeves"?
Lrrr: Surely it says anything but?
Nd-Nd: No, 'Keanu.' With an Earth 'K.' Behold!
Lrrr: This concept of Keanu as Spike confuses and infuriates us!

I actually think Keanu will pull this one off well.

You have to remember, Spike is a pretty serious yet sarcastic character. Keanu can do stoic near emotionless characters well, and he began his career in comedy so we might get a good mix for Bebop. He's also done kung fu stuff before in the Matrix trilogy.

I just want to know who the are gonna get to play Jet and Faye.

Well, Keanu, just make sure you get the smoking bit right this time. Don't let us down.

as long as Watanabee is involved it should be good. but Keanu? i don't know if he pull of Spike, that's a hard character to emulate. i hope they get someone good for Fey and Ed. but i guess Keanu is a good actor, i still love "the devils advocate" and "Bill and Ted.

I heard about that a couple of days ago...sad sad news. Spike is so cool and reeves is very much not.

Ron Pearlman for spike!

ugh.

Again, while many will frown, think of the bigger picture. If things go well with this film, its highly likely it could help fund that second series of Cowboy Bebop we really deserve to see.

Out of all the anime to film adaptions in production, I think CB, Battle Angel and Monster have the most potential.

I'd rather see Christian Bale play this part than Keanu Reeves. Bale has played characters with snappy personalities (Patrick Bateman, American Psycho) and emotional brick walls (John Preston, Equilibrium) so I'm sure he could handle it.
Qraze's Destructoid Blog
fuck christian bale. he ain't spike and couldn't pull it off.
i'd rather see that topher kid from "that 70's show" play spike, he'd actually be a good spike.
