Good Idea, Bad Idea: Grenades
emotoaster | 2:20 AM on 02.07.2008 17 comments

Now many of you just by clicking on this c-blog maybe asking yourself, “Who the fuck is emotoaster?” I have only one things to say.
1.I'm not Robert Summa.

A lot of gamers seem to take these things for granted, but can you blame them? They have been around since the land before time. I find though that in certain games they are just done horribly, but other times when done correctly make a game that much more intense and fun.

So lets start with the good.
One game that comes to mind, to me, is Halo. Not only do the grenades help flush out your opponents but they can also be a tool for fun aka humiliation. Theres nothing like seeing a sniper run away, like a girl only to see him get stuck by your plasma.

Bungie did a excellent job of tweaking the grenades overall power as well. I find its pretty hard to die with one nade but it can work and it is a great tool to at least take some of their shields down so you can finish them off and T-Bag them or flip that ghost thats been annoying the fuck out of you. It also isn't too easy to just run around and stick everyone. It's balanced.

And now the bad.
The first game that comes to mind is Call of Duty 4. (Yes I went there.) More and more frequently I find myself getting killed, then spawning only to have a random grenade go off on me. I know this is a random grenade throw because I saw them through it with the kill cam. And before you start telling me to “STFU n00b!” and “Learn2Play!” go play a few rounds of either CoD4 or Rainbow Six:Las Vegas and not tell me that there isn't one time you found them cheap or irritating. That is my biggest problem, and it only seems to be with “realistic” FPS games, but it comes off as cheap. I stopped playing Rainbow Six on Live, because I couldn't walk through a door without a frag going off. And when that happens it just turns into a camping fest or just spamming GGGGGGGGGG. Now that doesn't happen 100% of the time but I feel that it happens a tad too much.

Weren't grenades brought into gaming to help eliminate excessive camping and to flush out your opponents? Not be a FREE ticket to boosting your E-Penis. Infinity Ward tried to balance the game with that grenade indicator but it just doesn't seem to be enough.

When used well though grenades can really help bring strategy and just more ways to blow up that n00b, but when done wrongly it seems like it is just a tool to get a free kill.

So what do you guys think am I retarded or what?

P.S. Blood for the Blood God and also cocks.

COD 4 grenades are far from cheap. Being that it's a realistic game..uhh..it makes sense how easily explosives can phuck you up.

ps

"HAHAHAAHA YOU SUCK!"
emotoaster's Destructoid Blog
I understand it is realistic but to me it can take away from the fun, if all I'm doing is spawning then dieing.

Go Away!
or
STFU

(Your incurable rage looked hungry. And, uh, err.. so did your hunger?)

But cereally, valid points.

Oh and on COD4 I'd complain about the bad spawn points rather than the nades.
angusm's Destructoid Blog
Haha, COD4 a realistic game?
Looking: yes.
Gameplay-wise: hell nah.

It's easier to die in CoD4 (be that with shots, melee or nades), this gives you less room for mistakes.

I think that unless you're talking about the spawns like ADB said (which yeah, they fucking suck) then I'm pretty sure your constant dying is either by the lack of same level matchmaking (they know how and where to throw the nades) or because you make mistakes (don't react in time to avoid the explosion).

Anyway, good overall points, but I think the CoD4 part could be blamed on other things that aren't the granades.

You complain about random grenades in COD4, then you obviously haven't played Halo 3 enough. Halo3 is a grenade spammers paradise, especially when you get in the higher levels like the 40s. I've seen plenty of matches where a whole team will stand around the rockets on Narrows and just spam grenades on the opposing team. Hell, I have well over 500 sticks myself, and I don't play that much. I've spawned thousands of times right on top of a grenade. I don't play COD4 anymore, but I can garauntee from my experience that Halo3 has the worst grenades situation.

A simple game change to help fix this is temporary invlunerability for like 3 seconds after you spawn. Of course to balance this I would say you can't shoot during that spawn time either.

Also fixing the spawn points would help, but with as quickly as players move around the map it's hard to always have a clear spawn point.

Grenades in Warhawk are kind of in both Pro and Con, They help you defend a spot, and contribute to killing Tanks and crap. But they're also one shot kill and dont have to be that close to you to kill you.

Yeah, I’m not gonna lie...as soon as I unlocked the “Frag x 3” perk, I equipped it on pretty much all my classes. And yeah, at the start of a match, I’ll just run forward and throw one in the general direction of the opposing team. But hey, it’s part of the game...I always hated when it happened to me, so I have to return the favor.

@Aurain: I like the grenades in Warhawk a lot. Being able to hold six at one time may be a bit much — six grenades and six rockets is a ton of explosive power — but I like how the throwing controls feel, even though you can’t “cook” grenades like in CoD 4. However, that’s not an issue much of the time anyway, because if you hit someone with a grenade directly, they’re dead.

Grenades are for blowing people up. Sure, you can use them to blow people up strategically, but in the end, you're still using them to cause explosions that kill people. As long as they are serving that purpose, I don't see the problem. You complain about random grenades in COD4, but I see that in Halo far more often.
emotoaster's Destructoid Blog
But the thing with Halo though is that usually those grenade spams aren't going to kill you in one hit because of the sheild. I find it generally takes about 2 nades to die. So unless the whole other team is spam just you I think you have a decent (at the very least) chance of countering.

TF2 FTW!!!!

Usedtabe's Destructoid Blog
@Emotoaster: that all depends on your connection. I've died upon spawn plenty of times with just one nade that went off due to lag on my end or the other guys. For the most part, it will take 2 nades, but there are plenty of WTF moments where people die from one nade. Plenty of videos out there showing this. Don't get me started of the pic I took of a guy getting sniped in the head 3times and still lives to snipe me and my teammate. Blood splatter and bullet trail goes right through his head, but alas, he lives.
