The etiquette of blogging
WastelandTraveler | 3:57 AM on 06.17.2007 36 comments

What is the proper way to blog on Dtoid? What should you do and what should you not do? We will confront this issue with this blog so sit back, grab a cup a joe and enjoy!

A major issue has come out with dtoid bloggers, and it has caused an itch in all of our pants. We have come to a point where blogging is becoming more obtuse and pointless. So many blogs could be considered news tips rather than actual blogs. This must stop, it is very frustrating to see other users useful blogs pushed down and buried because someone posts 5 blogs in the span of 6 hours that only contain two lines of text and a link.THIS IS NOT BLOGGING! Blogging contains the bloggers OPINION & VIEWS on a subject that is being posted, not two lines of text and a link.

So what needs to be done? Rules should be put in place that require users to post a REAL BLOG instead of news tidbits. Do the blogs have to have anything dealing with gaming? Well that is a whole other issue in itself. The core of this issue is posting an actual blog, lets say the blog can be anything, KEEP IT MORE THAN TWO LINES OF TEXT FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST! AND PLEASE DO NOT COPYPASTA! Put YOUR input on what you are talking about, its not a blog if all you do is cut and paste text, thats a news tip. These are community blogs not community news submissions. Thats it, no argument, end game.

Now lets say you don't want to do rules and you want to keep it enforcement free. Ok fine, then give the users the option to push down a pointless blog or give the user an option to block someone they don't want to see. Something needs to be done about this. To many of us are sick and tired of seeing good blogs being pushed out of the way because some attention craving moron makes 50 blogs a day. So I say to all of you GET IT RIGHT OR WE WILL PERFORM A C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER ON YOUR ASS!

Now look, I am not trying to say what you should and should not blog. All I am saying is if you are going to blog something, at least put your own damn views on the subject and what you think of the matter, because if all you do is just copy and paste information, its not a blog its just a news post/tip. Simple as that, I'm sure its not that difficult to put your own damn opinon on something your posting.

Now please put your input on this issue, this is not to personally attack anyone. If you want to voice your opinion on this issue please do! :) F&@KING COCKASS!

I agree with you for the most part. I'd also throw in people who just use blogs to spam their own site. I don't think rules should actually be enforced, but it'd still be nice if people abide by your suggestions regardless. Once we have user groups and favorites set up, this issue won't be nearly as annoying.

It's natural that a lot of people will want to use their blogs to show Dtoid what they can do. It's also natural that news tips will come in from the blogs, too. I don't think enforcing rules is a good idea.

Also, I like making random, one-line or one-pic blog posts a lot of times. I work hard and sometimes I need to get something out on digital paper, no matter how short it is. That's just me, and I don't expect people to read it if they don't want to.

These blogs are still being toyed with, once you have the ability to set up favourites and things, like Mxyzptlk says, it'll be a lot easier. I already know one or two who are so going on the block list.

I do tell you one thing that pisses me off though - when an editor posts a news item on the frontpage, and someone links back to their blog being all "I did it first/better" sometimes even being annoyed at you for daring not to link to their blogs, despite the fact the news tip came from elsewhere.

We get tips in from all over. We don't always get our news via the blog system.

Agreed Sterling. I do like some of the one link couple line blog posts, but if a person was to make 5 in a row why not just put them in 1?

I am also for no rules enforced. The more freedom the community has the more variety of people it will get and various styles of bloggers. It would be stupid to conform to a way to blog.

Yes Jim I can agree with you on things, Im just posting this to state my opinion on what blogging is. Apart from that, from what mxzptlk said I do hope the group system changes things. And also I will agree with you on your second post with people pulling the whole "WAHHH I posted it first" routine. Its not like gaming news is posted on one specific website, it comes from everywhere.

The group thing should include a game news quickie section for people that like to write 2 sentences and link.

I would actually like a section like that.

Yes uber, thats exactly what I could deal with.. if someones making 10 blog posts a day of 1 to 2 line blog posts why not make ONE blog post for the whole day of all the types of things you want to post about. That way its all in one blog, it doesn't push other blogs down, and someone can view it all one page rather then having to view 5 differnt blogs that only have 2 lines of content on them.

Thank you sir may I have another? Dyslixec, you've officially topped your ability to talk backwards.

Niero tells of many tweaks and additions in time. Sections like Dtoid Army and news/tips would work. Groups/Friends sounds good. I'm trusting our grand robot leader on this one.

Also, Chris Hanson says.. cockAASSS??!?!!!

I have to agree to a point. Certain people abuse blogging to no end. I'd rather read about how exciting your trip to the mall was than OMFG NEW FLASH that we all knew a good 4 hours ago...

Tips need to be sent to dtoid, random shit needs to stay with the forums and blogs need to stay as what they are... blogs.

Don't forget about the forums people!

You guys also have to realize that the blog is in beta 0.1. there is going to be A LOT more functionality in the system in future versions. You just have to kind of deal with it for now.

Well, this is partially directed at me.

There's so many ways I could react to it... "What if it was just a pun?", "But my Kane and Lynch post WAS better", "The internet is cereal business" and so on, but really what I'm trying to get at is this:
When I did it, I was simply hoping for a satisfactory responce to the effort I put into entertaining the Dtoid community, not because I was indignant that my post wasn't credited.

It's understandable; if you put time and effort into something, you would quite like a responce or some appreciation. It's not perfect or godlike, but at least I'm being honest. *shrug*

all i can say is that you cant call it community blogging if your going to have hard core rules. Let it be open and free. DT strives to get the news they post on other sites yet when someone blogs on DT it is treated like I farted and you could smell it. Im blogging on DT cause I can. It is fun for me and I can show my pals who visit DT cause of the blogs I create. It creates PR for DT.

Sure it creates PR for your 2's of friends who can tolerate your rampant smelly farts. we just want you to condence down your posts a little. its not that your posting is bad persay, just that it hedges out other good posts by other people.

also no one calls it DT.
