The controls would be extremely easy too since the game was designed for PC and it was just point and click. You just tap the screen instead. Oh God, do want.
What you imagine in your head and actual actual fact is very different ;p
not that I wouldn't try it.
And as far as performance they can EASILY work their way with it Fallout 1's requirements are a joke compared to today... and its as follows.
10+ mb of HD Space
A Mouse replace with stylus
90mhz
32mb of ram
Hell jagged alliance has higher system requirements than that!
The biggest challenge for this would be to re-work the interaction with the game, which isnt complex at all to begin with. The content, story, everything is done, and considering the graphics are little to nothing they could use the same assets, unless they felt inclined to give it a little graphical boost.
And if they can get this to work, imagine getting tactics on there.. that would be shazamafied. (Just think Warhammer Squad Command but in a fallout tactics universe - shh i fucking loved squad commander).
I thought it was real too
A fallout DS port could work, and it could control and play quite well actually. But the problem is, considering the DS market would an 11-year old port of a PC game sell well? It's a great game but I don't think the appeal is there, and especially how Fallout 3's changing the series so much re-releasing the original may be a financial gamble for all parties involved.
There are the hardcore bases though, those who would buy the original on the DS in a heartbeat. And those who've never tried the game before but have heard a lot of good things about it and a DS port would be a great introduction (Chrono Trigger DS anyone?) And Fallout 3's popularity could also bring new buyers and make consumers delve deeper into the Fallout mythos.
TL;DR If this is gonna happen, it'll be a good time after Fallout 3 is released so the Fallout series gets mainstream awareness. And it would be awesome. And I could very well be wrong about absolutely everything in this comment.
/end over-analysis
I don't know why everyone here thinks the controls wouldn't work with a ds... I think they'd work fine, just substitute the mouse with the stylus and you've got the game. This really would be the most awesome DS game ever, then they could bring out F2 DS and F Tactics DS with Wi-Fi. Good job, I thought it was real for a sec... :P
