Battlefield Heroes - I don't give a damn if you scream tf2 ripoff edition!
WastelandTraveler | 2:26 PM on 02.06.2008 22 comments

Well holy shit I am excited for this game how about you? #1 ITS FREE!, #2 YOU CAN MAKE YOUR CHARACTER LOOK ANY WAY YOU WANT! #3 ITS RETURNING TO THE BF1942 GAMEPLAY STYLE!!!!!!! I mean come on, who could ask for anything more? This is one of the few titles im actually really excited for now, no matter how simple of a title it is.

Now hold on to your nuts and bolts to those who cry fowl. Especially to those pc goers that yell "WAAAH 3rd PERSON ?!? GET RID OF THAT LEAVE THAT TO CONSOLES!" Leave that to consoles? Son.. do you remember oni? Tomb Raider? RUNE?!? RUNE!!! Come on, third person is an old tactic just as first person is. Its not console territory by any means. Now that I got that out of the way.. the art style, yeah yeah yeah TF2 did it first blah blah blah, and the incredibles had the original look before tf2 theres no need to point out the obvious.

I personally love this art style and want to see chaotic games adopt the style. Because lets face it its a chaotic and absolutely silly environment, and the look will just enhance that silliness even more. And one thing I love about these games is they always will provide epic lulz. Even tho you cry fowl to its 'replicating' tf2, it still has its own visual style to it. For one, the characters look more like art-deco propaganda art than anything else, with their sharp chins and sharp nose they resemble it almost perfectly. And who cannot help but smile with happiness at the pilot poking out of the plane hes sitting in.. its so cute!

Now aside from all that crap, the gameplay in which Battlefield Heroes is falling under is a bit different from the other games in the series. For one you will have one character that you level through out your experience in the game, much like bf2 I'm assuming. On top of that you can make your character look any way you want! There will only be 3 classes, the Soldier, the Gunner, and the Commando. Each with their own specific attributes.. pretty much light, medium, and heavy armored units. And lets not forget the perks.. as much as I'm against perks and what not in certain games.. I will make an exception with this one simply because the perks added to this game are amazing I give you "Bomb Bouquet" (non official name) where you throw 15 GRENADES AT THE SAME TIME! Basically its a hand held artillery strike. How can you NOT love that? Theres a mountain of other perks that are in the game that have not been reviled yet but if thats just one of them man I cannot wait to see more.

The developers also say that gameplay wise the game will play much simpler than the rest of the battlefield series, it will be more focused around blowing shit up and shooting each other than actually having accurate aim.. so crouching will not improve your accuracy. I personally have mixed feelings with this, but as ridiculous as this game is already I can make the exception I suppose!

Also according to the information that has been released you will be able to run this game on the following machine specs : 1 Ghz CPU, 512MB Ram, 64 MB Video Card, 500mb of HD Space.

Anyways, without further delay, I give you the information that has been handed out already @ planetbattlefield.com. This is a list of things that will be featured in the game and some of them may or may not change in the future!

http://www.planetbattlefield.com
http://www.battlefield-heroes.com

Runs on a computer with specs as low as 1Ghz CPU, 512 MB Ram, 64 MB Video Card, 500 MB HDD Space.

- "Dolphin Diving" ability does not exist in BFH
- Crouching does not provided added accuracy
- Each team starts with a certain number of lives, fragging an enemy causes them to lose a life. Capping points increases the amount of lives you take for each kill
- The website will be a "social hub" with friends lists, item store, character customization, forums, community news, leaderboards and more. Think of it as a Battlefield Myspace
- Planes are slow moving and take damage from all weapons
- Advertisements will appear on the games login and "community webpages"

General Information:
- Community management team a lot larger than any other Battlefield game
- Game has "telemetry technology" that gives feedback on items people buy and how characters are setup
- Entire game is 3rd person so you can see the customizations your player has. Also - allows you to see your player blown into the air. If 1st person is really wanted it can be changed over time.
- Assorted taunts and emotes
- Any abilities you have show at the bottom of the HUD
- No command rose like BF2
- Holding Q opens 6 panels each allows you to select a jeer, wisecrack, or suggestive body language. These can be bought with points just like abilities
- Players have a lot more health
- Weapons less lethal
- Spawn time shorter (5 seconds)
- Firefights last longer giving time to use unlockable abilities
- Vehicles spawn when you arrive at the point (no waiting)
- "Intelligent Spawn System" spawns players close to the action
- Both lone wolf and competitive clan play encouraged
- Cannot switch kits mid match
- Choose abilities before you start a game
- Idea to do a cartoon Battlefield dates back to Battlefield 1942, Lars Gustavsson envisioned something like BFH

Point System:
- Called "metagame" Just a temporary name not official
- You character picks what faction to play for and you fight for territorial position, all your points you gain go into your faction / army's pool. At the end of the week amount of area conquered by each faction is added up and each is awarded "money" depending on the percentage of conquered land.

Customizable Features: (in-game money will get you this)
- Heads, faces, necks, chests, hands, waists, legs, feet

Items:
- Eye patches, badges, hats, boots, helmets, goggles, belts, gloves

Classes:
- Solider
-- Best at determining an enemy's location
-- Has a See-the-Enemy power - outlines nearby opponents even through walls. Lasts 10 seconds, 30 seconds to recharge

- Gunner
-- Well armed and armored
-- Slow moving
-- Uses rapid-fire machine guns, rocket launchers, possibly flamethrowers in the future
-- Can throw grenades back

- General Abilities Information

-- Possibility of 15 abilities at launch and 50 in the first year

How is this free...in game adverts?
Option to buy shit with real cash?
This sounds too good to be free-free.
WastelandTraveler's Destructoid Blog
There will be an advertisement in the login screen and loading screen. There may be a micro-transaction for purchase of map packs or something along those lines in the future. But for new attributes / character looks (eye patches, hats, etc) you will use in game money - which im taking as XP / Credits that you earn when you level up or how succesful you are in the game.
lazuli's Destructoid Blog
it sounds really good for a free game any word on weather there'll be a mac version?
WastelandTraveler's Destructoid Blog
I'm sure there will be lazuli, every battlefield game has come to mac. This one is being developed on the bf 2142 engine so most of the optimization is already taken care of for mac.
