Dtoid Los Angeles is having a Halloween party!

It's been a while since we've all gotten together, so let's meet up this Saturday!

The wonderful Kyle and Donna will be hosting a Halloween party at their house, complete with giant inflatable slide, great people, and copious amounts of alcohol (please help out and bring some of your own to share!).

The party will be taking place Saturday, October 29th, at 7pm. For directions, and to tell us that you'll be coming, please join our Google Group and let us know.

Hope to see you all there!   read

A heartfelt farewell from your DtoidLosAngeles curator

Hello, citizens of El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles del Río de Porciúncula. I'm pulling out all of the stops on the name of our, er, your city, because this will be my last post as the person running DtoidLosAngeles. The illustrious Jonathan Ross will be taking over as the sole proprietor of this blog.

Most of you already know, but I have now moved out of the city. Out of the state, even. So it no longer makes sense for me to run the show around here. I'll still be part of your Google Group, so I won't be gone from your discussions, but I certainly won't be making many appearances as your parties.

Looking back, I surprised myself that I've actually been doing this for almost two and a half years now. Indeed, DtoidLosAngeles has been around since before the whole city group thing really took off. In fact, meeting up with Destructoid people in real life is something I had wanted to do for awhile.

Starting up DtoidLosAngeles was really a selfish move on my part. I moved to the Los Angeles area late in 2007, and I had hardly any friends nearby. Most of my peers weren't interested in videogames, so I spent most of my time alone, until I figured that there must be some other Destructoid people in Los Angeles who I could meet. So that is what I set out to do. Now I'm gone, and I just want to thank everybody who has been my friend over the past few years. In roughly chronological order...

Chad, Tristero, Charlie: As some of the first people I met here, you couldn't have been more welcoming. Thanks for the NES birthday gift. Bee Suit Boyz forever!
Chad: I will always remember the time I stayed at your place past when the trains stop running, so I had to stay the night. Then when I woke up the next morning, you were playing Super Mario Galaxy, just making him jump and orbit things and having a blast with it. Classic Chad moment right there.
Tristero: I'm sorry I didn't get to see you again before we left. The going away party ended up not happening. I will have to make it up to you some time in the near future (PAX maybe?), but until then, if I ever catch you on Xbox Live, I'll be sure to get in a game of Left 4 Dead with you.
Ark: Your generosity is unparalleled. You gifted me games, you gave me a retro console, you drove me up to San Francisco, you took me to the Kung Fu Panda launch event, you brought me to the Dreamworks family lunch, you bought expensive alcohol for my parties, and through all of that, what did I do for you? I feel like I did hardly anything. I will miss you and Emily dearly, and I regret that I never got to meet Professor Rodger.
J-Ro: We didn't always see eye-to-eye on games (I hate fighters, you hate Rock Band) but I felt immediately comfortable with you, and I'm sure I'll be keeping in touch with you on IRC. I'd invite you to come visit us, but I know you hate Phoenix.
Dave & Kerry: It still breaks my heart that two intelligent, educated, witty (if not sometimes groan-inducingly cheesy) people are not going to help keep the human race afloat by producing offspring. Do it for America!
Kyle: If somebody had told me as I was graduating college that my best friend in Los Angeles would be a thirty-year-old ex-Mormon father-of-two, I probably wouldn't have believed it. Here we are now, having shared so much. Left 4 Dead, Gears of War, Lost Odyssey, Rock Band, 'Splosion Man, Borderlands... I know for a fact that if it weren't for our shared propensity for rhythm games and Achievement whoring, I would have never gotten through the Endless Setlist in Rock Band.
Kyle & Donna: Parties at your place were always fantastic. Sure, the place could have used air conditioning, but where else could we go for giant inflatable sliding, loud-as-we-wanted Rock Banding, and street parking that doesn't require fifteen minutes of circling the block?
Travis: I will miss you tons, man. Nobody could make me laugh quite as well as you do. Thanks for all of the backyard barbecues and basement drumming, too. If I ever get my game made, I am totally going to hit you up for some sweet baritone voice work.
Mike & Steve: You guys are always a blast to hang out with. Photo booth up front, fire pit in the back, and food more delicious than most others on this list. I will certainly miss you guys, but Lib will miss you even more; she connected with you two more strongly than anybody else.
Ron: Your playful attitude is something I'll definitely miss. Plus, now I need a new black friend! You gave us all a scare recently (seriously, I had a dream that you died and I was totally sad and crying in my dream), and I'm so glad that your HP didn't drop to zero. You have to stick around this world for me to compare our Gamerscores at least as long as I do.
Tyler: Where the heck have you been? I feel like I haven't seen you since the Puzzle Quest: Galactrix launch event. We had some good times there, at the Gears of War 2 event, and at some random NARPs. I've been telling you this for months now, but you need to make yourself more available to us. Well, not us, them, I guess.
Alex: I regret that we met you so late in our tenure in Los Angeles. You're a wacky character, and I don't think I'll ever has as much fun playing Rock Band as when you're on the mic. Guesting on LAPD was a pleasure and an honor, and your extreme generosity at Rivera is something I'll remember forever.
Lib: We didn't meet in Los Angeles, but you followed me there. We shared our first apartment in Pasadena, and in it, you were magically transformed from my girlfriend to my fiancée. I'll miss walking around Little Tokyo with you, going to Griffith Observatory (although you Wolfgang Pucked up your dinner), driving down to Disneyland and Medieval Times, driving up to Magic Mountain and to see my grandparents, and everything else we shared while we were there. Luckily, I don't have to miss you, because you're the one person I got to take with me. I love you.
Everybody else: Seriously, this list is way long. I've met a lot of you in the time that I've been running DtoidLosAngeles, and I appreciate all of the smiles, hugs, gaming, and love you guys have to offer. If I'm ever in town again, I will be sure to let you all know.

And lastly, to any Arizona residents (particularly Phoenix), keep on the lookout for your own city group. It's on the way!   read

DtoidLosAngeles's May events

Herro DtoidRosAngeres! Just putting up a helpful little post about the goings-on for the month of May. Let's get started.

Assuming the April showers are done, Kyle and Donna are having people over this coming Saturday, May 8th, down in El Monte. Why are we hoping for no rain? Because of the giant inflatable slide, of course. But even if the slide is a no-go, there will be standard NARP fare: snacks, drinks, and of course, games. Join us!

You should especially show up if you haven't come to anything yet. If you still shy away from meeting us in person, then you're dead to me.

Later on in the month, on Monday, May 24th, Dexter and Lib are planning a Six Flags Magic Mountain trip. If you're down with roller coasters and taking a day off of work (and honestly, other than Suff0cat, who isn't?), then join them for some twists and turns and frozen lemonade and avoiding gonosyphiherpelAIDS.

As always, stay tuned to our Google Group and our Facebook Group for details and any last-minute get-togethers (last weekend our friend Alex had a few people over, and we played Typing of the Dead). Hopefully we'll see you soon!   read

Check out DtoidLosAngeles's new Facebook page [shortblog]

Hey guys. As the sole proprietor of DtoidLosAngeles (I'm not even sure what that means), it is my pleasure to bring you yet another way to get and/or stay connected with other DtoidLosAngelenos. Now, in addition to following this blog right here and joining discussions on our Google Group, you can also join our Facebook group.

The benefit of the Facebook group is that you're already always on Facebook anyway, so you can always be on our Facebook group page, or something. Also, you can upload pictures and have discussions, just like the Google Group. To be honest, I'm not sure why we have this now, but we do, so you can join it!

Lovingly,

Some upcoming events for DtoidLosAngeles

Oh herro! It's been awhile since we've put up a blog on what has been going down here in Los Angeles. It is partly because we are lazy, and partly because all of our event planning goes on in our Google Group, and we forget that there are some people out there who either don't know about the group (hint: click that link), or prefer to get their information blog-style.

But if you're one of the people who just wait on the blogs, then you will have missed what we did two weekends ago, which was a birthday party for Destructoid's forum administrator, Technophile. Shame on you for not being there.

As far as this weekend, we've got a party coming up for Alphador AKA Orion AKA Herbert the Pervert AKA Xherbert. You should come and help him forget how old he is becoming with booze and/or games. Details on the where and the when can be found on our aforementioned Google Group.

Down the line, we've got a bigger get-together planned, as ceark, famous for creating the Destructoid graphic novel two years ago, is moving into a new house. His new place is going to be pretty big (for Los Angeles), and we have been promised not only videogame related shenanigans, but also time and space for board games. Tentative date is February 20th, but as always, keep your eyes on the Google Group for late-breaking info.

That's all we've got for you right now. The year is gearing up, and I'm sure you'll hear more from us come E3. It gets crazy here around that time, and if you ever want to not-miss something, it's then. Until then, come hang out and play games with us at our smaller gatherings!

UPDATE: Just got this in today! On Saturday, January 30th, from 2PM to 11PM, at Project Infest, there's gonna be a Street Fighter IV tournament. But not only that, there will apparently be open bar from two to five (after a cover of $10), and cheap bar food. Along with a tournament, there will be a few fighter-related vendors (arcade sticks and otherwise), a non-fighter "casual games" lounge, and some electronic music for maximum groove. Again, check out the Google Group for the full press release. And hopefully, we'll see you there!   read

Halloween is coming up, party with DtoidLosAngeles

You might be aware that October 31st is closing in on us pretty quickly. All Hallow's Eve is a fantastic excuse to dress up as your favorite game character outside of a convention center. Or, you could just put on some lingerie and some cat ears to be a sexy kitty (meow). Regardless, we'd like you to add a new tradition to your Halloween. Come party with DtoidLosAngeles at Kyle and Donna's house down in El Monte.

You would already know about the plans if you were part of our Google Group (and really, if you're in the Los Angeles area, why aren't you in the Google Group yet?). Details for when to show up and the location are in the email thread.

Of note are the usual "party at Kyle & Donna's" fare: food, drinks, giant inflatable slide, and games. Show up in costume or Donna will take you into the back room and possibly embalm you. So then, business as usual.

What is unusual, is that our good friend Keener is in town. It is our duty to show him how good a time DtoidLosAngeles has, so he renounces DtoidNewYork and calls southern California home.

So show up! Bring booze! Don't forget your DS/PSP! Expect Rock Band and/or Street Fighter IV! Games woo oh my goodness!

EDIT: The Honorable Mr. Concelmo has pointed out that this party is going on during Daylight Saving Time clock adjusting, so we get another hour to party! Woo x2!   read

Nerdcore calendar 2010 launch party on Wednesday, October 28th

Hello there DtoidLosAngelinos (and other people reading this, unfortunate enough to not live in Los Angeles). It's been awhile since we've last brought you news of parties/events. Truth is, you ought to join our Google Group if you want to keep totally abreast of goings-on (or to simply partake in the email shenanigans that go on daily). But we still maintain this blog for bigger, more public events, and one is coming up.

The fourth annual Nerdcore Calendar launch event is set to occur on the 28th of this month, at Royal Clayton's English Pub (click for directions). Fitting that it is near Halloween, because this year's theme is horror (those paying attention will know that 2007 was retro games, 2008 was superheroes/villains, and 2009 was science fiction). Several of us went as a group for last year's launch party, and if you need any convincing about it, refresh yourself with this lovely blog by Mr. Chad Concelmo.

Unfortunately, the press release we received made no mention of free drinks for this one as there were in previous years. It is unclear whether this means that there will be no open bar, or if they simply aren't advertising this so people don't just come for the booze. Still, there will be models there for calendar signing, music provided by DJ R-Rated, and ghosts, allegedly.

If you want one of the calendars, you can buy one from http://www.totallynerdcore.com, and either have it shipped to you, or if you're in the area, pick it up at the launch party.   read

Pre-PAX shindiggity at bleep's place

Greetings Angelinos. Just about everybody on the site is gearing up for PAX, and lucky for us, that means some people are coming from all over the world just to hang out with us before PAX! Or maybe there are coming for different reasons, but as a side effect, we get to be graced with the likes of FooLiz from Australia and ScottyG from Canada.

So we are thinking about having a party with games and drinks and the usual on Friday, August 28th. Bleep, our resident really-tall-guy, has graciously offered up his house for a party. He has a grill. We can cook meat on it.

So if you're interested in some pre-PAX celebration, or especially if you are unfortunately not coming up to Seattle with us, then keep your calendar open for the 28th. And if you'd like details, or would just like to keep up with our behind-the-scenes conversations, make sure you join our Google Group.

If you don't come to this, and you live in the LA area, you're a terrible person!   read

Los Angeles goings-on for E3

Just in case you've missed all the discussion in our Google Group (unless you're an out-of-towner, you have no excuse), there are some things going on soon! E3 is next week, and a good portion of the editors and others will be in town. Some even get here today.

First up is our "welcome to LA" party. It will be like our typical parties, only with significantly more people. So, you can expect games, drinks, food, and a giant slide. Kyle and Donna are once again our gracious hosts. The party is tomorrow night, it starts at seven, and it goes until whenever. Need to know how to get there? You can find that information in our Google Group.

Next up is the karaoke party on Monday. I've been told that the RSVP list is now closed, as it tops the capacity of the place by some ridiculous amount. If you've RSVP'd make sure you get there early enough to get in.

Ahh, E3. It's like Christmas in June, except you get to hang out with people you actually like.   read

Party this Saturday at Kyle & Donna's

Hello again, fellow Destructoid Los Angelinos. Lately, DtoidLosAngeles has been missing something. What has it been missing? A little thing called Chad Concelmo. Well guess what. He's back, baby.

And to celebrate it, Kyle and Donna are having people over to their place for drinks, games, and of course, their trademark giant slide. It will be good times. You should come over, if you've been lurking around the Los Angeles area. If you're interested, join our Google Group to get information on how to find the place.

Probable games for the evening: Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Rock Band 2, Street Fighter IV, and late into the night when people get loopy, Noby Noby Boy. Sounds great, right? Come join us!   read
