No seriously, what the fuck. Rez HD is a game I have been eagerly anticipating since it was announced to be released for Xbox Live Arcade back in september. I was wowed by the gameplay videos, thinking that this game might turn out to be the next G-wars. So today the game was released and after checking the IGN review score (8.6, and I did not read the actual review yet) I went ahead and unassed 10 bucks for the thing.
Fired the game up, was sure to go through the tutorial first, which seemed easy enough; Press A to shoot, B to use "overdrive" (think geometry wars "smart bomb") and the sticks to aim and move. Ok. Simple. Right?
Erm...do what now?
At first the game seemed very easy (does anyone else notice that they all the XBLA games seem that way in the trial verson?) But after a few "layers" which I mistook to be levels, the music and the intensity both ramped up. I finally reached a boss after layer 10, licking my lips for what I was sure would be my first unlocked achievement in Rez HD. After shooting some spinning globe thing with a bunch of lights or something flying in and around it, I was suddenly dead. The viruses must have gotten me, but how? In the words of Towelie, I don't even know what's going on right now, man.
This is not a formal review of Rez HD or anything. I am just simply relaying my first impressions with the game. What am i missing? Is this game confusing as all hell to anyone else or did the dronkmunk simply get too dronk this time?
Also going into REZ looking for achievements probably isn't the right approach.
for newcomers like me, i thought it was pretty hard. getting all the achievements will be an exercise in REZ obsession for a couple of months.
It seems fun enough, but I'm just not feeling the sheer adoration that most people seem to have for it.
Final Fantasy IX was amazing when I smoked back in HS. Too bad I kept passing out.
@ dronkmunk: Yes, achievement whoring isn't the right way. You're doing it wrong my friend.
Do yourself a favore save the ten bucks and get you a decent Burrito.
Maybe some people are just wired differently, but IMO if after level 5 you aren't creaming yourself I think you should check to see if you have a pulse.
Always shoot down projectiles and attacking parts first.
Don't always go for the Max lock on.
Don't focus on ANYTHING too long
As for the first boss, be aware of the bright green parts of it because that's what will be firing at you. Always attack those first no matter what but spread the love/lasers around as well.
And I say this as a person who has only touched weed ONCE in my entire life.
I think it's an amazing game, but I love the concept of multi-layered artistic expression.
It's not about the fact that it's a shooter, it's not about the length, the on-rails. It's all about using the game to create your music.
As for the achievements comments, it is what it is. I think a lot of ya'll are fronting on me right now.
You fail. Try again.
I could give a rip about achievements bro. I just stated the game while cool, isn't all that.
Newsflash: I bought this for the PS2 full price supporting it way back when because it was different.
But honestly aside from the tripping factor..the game is overhyped.
You want to be a salivate over this very short, on-rail shooter because of some little gray blimbs telling you, you got some achievements have it.
It's a rhythm game, not a shooting game. Have fun playing it, not beating it.
Dammit.
Then again, also note that this is coming from someone who owns an unopened Trance Vibrator.
Unless it's in the movie theater you work at because then you're just hoping your manager doesn't come in and catch you.
.....huh, what?
Anyway, I did play the game again, and it is a good game, I mean i get it now. Turns out I just suck. Can't even crack the leaderboards for score attack.
