You need to join Dtoid's own little N7 Ops Group. Me, Wrenchfarm, and Stahlbrand get together, especially for FNF, and tackle enemy forces, usually with one random since it's usually just us.
Personally, I love it, so they managed to convert at least one consummate single-player gamer. Whether that translates to success or not, I'm not sure. But I do know that I never have trouble filling up a lobby whenever I boot up a game, so there must be plenty of us playing. The ability to customize and all of that in the lobby makes it easier if you want to stay with the same group, but good manners says when you drop into a match you take care of your equipment before hand. However, I think when people are holding up the game they aren't usually changing out their weapons or equipment, just dicking around.
One of the biggest problems I find with playing with strangers is that people tend to go cowboying off on their own and die, and then you have to revive them every 2 minutes. When I play with my friends we tend to stick together and work together as a unit a lot better.

Its not bad, but I'd be lying if I said it was compelling enough for me to keep playing beyond the couple days that I did.
I've had a shocking ammount of fun with the N7 multiplayer -and I was one of those wet blankets that thought it was going to suck.
I love class-based team gameplay, I love horde mode, and I love customization. ME3's multiplayer scratches all of those itches. Really shines when playing with reliable teammates that are willing to work as a team. Like Strider said, drop in for the FNF!
