Mirror's Edge - through the looking glass
dieubussy | 1:56 PM on 11.01.2008 3 comments

In order to deliver the packages, Faith must live and work on the edge of the city, away from the zones controlled by the oppressive government. Mirror's Edge is all about running as fast as possible without looking back, about jumping as high and as farthest as the player can in order to evade opponents and tackle the obstacles.

I thought it would be nice to stop and regard the environments a little more, to focus on the small details this virtual world had to offer: because the true quality of a virtual world is best determined by the level of its seemingly insignificant minutiae.

FAITH’S HANDS

Body awareness in an FPS is a luxury seldom found. When pushed into a wall, Faith will keep a distance by extending her arms. If you remain steady for a while, she’ll even look at her nails and fix them. Let’s face it: all that climbing and ledge grabbing is a serious threat to her manicure.

GARBAGE BINS

These come in different colors. The quality of their polygonal representation somehow makes them exceed their practical function.

PUBLICITY

As it happens with most representations of the near future, advertising is an essential tool used by the domineering governments in order to keep the people distracted from the real issues. The first, an energy drink ad; the second, the idyllic living to be found in a luxury building compound.

ROOFTOP TECHNOLOGY

These are some of the electronic gadgets that can be found scattered over the rooftops: antennas, satellite dishes, rotating security cameras and digital door locks.

MATERIALS

These materials can be found everywhere. I personally liked that little floor scrubber as it does tell of a society obsessed with being clean and neat.

BILINGUAL LABELS

If you look close enough, many of the labels and warnings will be displayed in both English and Chinese. It reminds me of Blade Runner’s depiction of future Los Angeles society with a mesh of different languages. Of course, they replaced the noir look with bright day light and clear blue skies.

A CITY SURROUNDS YOU

While Mirror’s Edge gives the player a lot of freedom on how to explore the spaces, allowing the player to choose different paths leading to the same objective, there is a part of the city which seems to be out of reach. Way above us or down below, these inaccessible spaces give the impression of a living and breathing world that surround the player during his experience.

I got a Fallout blondie keychain, and decided to play a little with it. I unscrewed the key chains and all of a sudden I had this little guy asking to be photographed. I hope you enjoy it.

Kenichi Nishi, of Love-De-Lic and Skip fame, is currently working on a new project which promises to surprise even his most devoted followers. NEWTONICA is a game uniquely designed for the iPhone and the iPod touch, in an attempt to strengthen the videogame market on both Apple portable systems.

I was able get an exclusive interview with Nishi, who very seldom speaks to the public. It can be found here:

I hope you enjoy it!

Right now, I'm what you call a casual blogger. I didn't know Destructoid that well and the main reason why I entered this website was because I found some user was mentioning me and all I wanted was to be able to reach to him.

At any rate, I see there are a lot of people writing in Destructoid blogs so I think I'll be taking my chance. I have a blog of my own already, but the problem with it is that it is only in portuguese, my native language. I'm always dead serious on that blog so I've decided to go with the flow and be funny here. I'll try to be, that's what I mean.

Thanks for reading, y'all.
