The Metal Gear franchise was AMAZING. I use the term "was" in the event that should mark Metal Gear Solid 4 as the final of the series.
How can you keep such a hit going? Easy, Online Play.
And in a world where console online shooters are run by Halo and Call of Duty, it shouldn't be too hard to achieve such a goal. However, there's just one issue, Metal Gear does not translate well for online play.
Granted, it's fun and interesting to be in the middle of a Deathmatch while having to hunt down gamers playing a Snake, but the game modes aren't enough to save Metal Gear Online.
The control scheme for Metal Gear Solid (2, 3 and 4) are amazing, and fit perfect for the single player espionage/action game. However, throw those meticulous controls into the hectic online frey and you're left with gamers fumbling their thumbs and missing their shots in attempts to "BOOM HEAD SHOT" and grapple an opponent via CQC (Close Quarters Combat).
As console games go, developers love to release new stuff thanks to Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. This will hopefully allow Konami to add a couple of new features to the game to keep it fresh and prevent the daunting controls from completely ruining the game.

One thing I would change is I'd like to be able to carry more than one rifle at a time, be it a shotgun or sniper or something to complement my assault rifle. I hate running out of ammo and being stuck with only my handgun to use...
Perhaps you should roll with on on Meta Gear Saturdays with the rest of the Destructoid Clan and see exactly how different it is that way. Personally, I love it.
I think Metal Gear translated wonderfully for online play. I'm playing Metal Gear, with exactly the same aesthetic and mechanics of the single player mode, only I get to do it with lots of other people. If MGO had been anything other than what it is (Metal Gear, Online), I would have been completely disappointed.
@zombieplatypus
If you knock someone out (or use CQC3's disarm maneuver) you can pick up other weapons. They're forcing you to specialize to encourage teamwork. Pair up with a sniper and try to cover them, or try to get the masterkey for under the M4. I think it's available when Drebin Points are enabled.
tl;dr I disagree. Welcome to destructoid. Don't suck.
However, everyone else is hell bent on scoring kills and using other players as bait, without thier permission, I do not know how it is for you Americans, but playing MGO in europe, teamwork is non-existant. Tactical play is good and all, but when you are the only person on the team doing it(bar the Dtiod Euro clan, you guys rock) your team loses due to other players.
I just thank god for Euro MGM
1. headshots are way too easy
i mean seriously ak47 from a mile away!
2.people who end up as snake in a sneaking match and dont know what to do
you always get that lucky asshole who gets to go snake and then just kills people the whole match!
WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!!
Trev
So I press left trigger to aim, press Y to go into FP, then shoot, which, most of the time results in death. I would fuck people up just by throwing granades, since the characters move at a snails pace.
The best thing about the game is the menus, honestly. They're light and quick and are satisfying to navigate. The skill system for weapons and whatnot is also pretty neat. Once you actually start PLAYING though you realise that not much thought was put into translating MGS into an online game.
MGS's controls are acceptable for single player gaming but amazingly bad for multiplayer. It feels entirely too shoehorned into typical online shooter gameplay when clearly none of MGS's gameplay is suited to the speed of online play.
I'm not sure what Konami's expectations are for MGO but I suspect they will have eliminated all but a small percentage of die hard MGS fans from playing this game for more than a week or two.
I guess I should start carrying that anesthesia gun instead of equipping a handgun I don't use anyways, eh? Whenever I run out of ammo now I just tend to get offed and then come back reloaded, your way is way better...
One thing I do second is Mushman's frustration with the abundance of non-micced players though...
Set FPV memory to 'on'. I don't have trouble hitting people, or diving away from grenades, so I don't know what to tell you. Are you walking while aiming? That throws your aim off pretty badly.
@Russtolium and anybody else
"clearly none of MGS's gameplay is suited to the speed of online play."
Here's the problem, I was really waiting for somebody to say it. There is no preset speed for online play. If your preconceptions of online shooters have you charging around, AK blazing, losing horribly at MGO, MGO's mechanics are not the issue. Metal Gear Online isn't a typical online shooter, it's Metal Gear, but online. Play it like Metal Gear; playing it like a typical online shooter is, in fact, doing it wrong. It's like complaining that Halo doesn't have a cover mechanic. Each game is exactly what it's supposed to be, whether that be a slow, tactical game or a run-and-gun shooter.
@zombieplatypus
That's what I do. Knocking people out is almost preferable to killing them because it takes them more time to wake up than it does to respawn, and you can rip off their guns forcing them to run around less ammo or just their secondary. I'd actually use the Mosin sniper if it weren't a death sentence if you have to actually fight someone. I'll give it a shot (ba dum tsh) if you, Jimbo or somebody wants to watch my back Saturday.
I didn't know about auto FPV. I will give it a shot.
Team work is a huge part of the game and while I do enjoy parting from the team (damn kill stealing) it's just a nice change.
I use the SVD 99% of the time and the other one 1% of the time I use the hand gun, all the time...oh yeah.
I fucking love it. And all I do is run around with an M4 and shoot people, usually in the head. In fact, I've got more headshot kills that regular. So I don't see a problem.
Then again, the game may not be for everyone. It has a steep learning curve, as most new players will probably get their asses kicked the first few times.
But again, I fucking love it.
I really like the slower pace that makes you think about your actions and plan accordingly. The emphasis on teamwork is a nice contrast to other FPSs because I find going it alone can get more boring more quickly.
There are 2 things that really piss me off though:
1.) There's no way to heal yourself.
2.) People who insist on going all Rambo and trying to take on the enemy teams alone. Teamwork isn't necessarily the key to victory but sticking together is dammit
