I kinda agree. I'm not even a fan of RPGs, but having played that game for the first time a few months ago, I can easily say that it was deserving of all of its praise.
Despite technical advancements with each generation, I feel like the more we progress, the less grandiose, imaginative content we're able to create. I don't think we could create a game that feels as sweeping and grand as it did for its time. Despite being only a world map across several time zones, it felt like we really were travelling across different dimensions and worlds.
I don't think this generation could create the visceral impact of a world being fissured by some grand force, then give you the huge sense of adventure that spans families, generations, cities, countries, society, and our entire race! The sprite-based nature of the game left a lot up to our imagination to fill in the blank, and creating it all in a game would be a huge challenge.

I would definitely pick up another game set in that universe, like Chrono Cross was. But as for an actual sequel to the source material - I agree, I don't see a good way to do it that doesn't tarnish the memory of the original. That story is told; let it pass into memory.
Me neither, Chrono Cross was horrible and the new Square Enix does not fill me with any confidence in how they would treat the IP.
Best to let it rest and remembered as one of the all time greats I feel, I simply ignore Cross and the DS version's extra ending.

This is yet another example of video game companies kinda doing what they feel is good, sort of playing jazz and coming up with a masterpiece. Chrono Trigger was made on the shoulders of giants like Secret of Mana and Final Fantasy. Their game also did things its own way, but now that there are less and less limitations on graphic quality and processing power - everything is less endearing (like in the case of Chrono Cross). Chrono Cross wasn't the worst game in the world, some regarded it as quite good actually. But if you play the two games one after the other, it is a bit disappointing. Where Chrono Trigger had an amazing flow to it, Chrono Cross seemed to drag on and on. I cared much more about the characters in the original, and even cared a great deal about the silent protagonist! I feel this way about a lot of games, but none more than Chrono Trigger.
I can see a sequel possibly being more amazing than Chrono Trigger, but these are dreams and imaginings. I do not have one bit of faith in Square Enix to pull something like that off. There will have to be a change in the video game industry itself. Someone new will have to really master what was so good about Chrono Trigger and find a way to pitch a new one, probably with the RPG damn near ready made to ship. That, and Square Enix will have to admit to themselves that they can't do it, that they have lost their way and do not truly know what they had with Chrono Trigger.
It's not going to happen.
