Besides the daily routine of doing no wrong and having to smack some people around when they act up and start talking that shit on MvC 2(Senisan, Smurfee, KD, RAB, Snaileb, Aborto...the list goes on ;D) I've been playing many overlooked(read: never knew of their existence) fighting games. I think the number's around 12 or 13 but I'm just gonna share 5 that really stuck out for me either for good or bad reasons. Don't worry about how I got to play them either. *Bloo does the shifty eyes*
Oh yeah pictures and videos too.
Fighter's History Developer/Publisher: Data East Platforms: Arcade(1993), Super Nintendo(1994)
Stay the fuck away from this! -____________-
Ok....As the release year should have triggered in your mind, this was put together when the arcade's hustle and bustle and Street Fighter 2's clout was still in full force. And this game really tried to cash in on that. Really, they tried so hard they decided to just take SF2 and switch some colors and change the characters around. Yeah, its a knock-off.
Y Capcom no le gusto eso, they sued their asses, but they lost the case surprisingly. Now the only thing that this game does differently compared to SF2 is suck. Nothing was expanded from SF2, and I was bored after playing one round :/
WTF are they saying?
hmmm, some positives. The graphics are good, they actually look better than SF2's IMO and the game will be familiar if you've played SF2(...errrr, not really a positive is it? >_>)
...
That's pretty much it. It got a sequel(which I assume is garbage as well) and SNK acquired a character in the game, Makoto Someshit(a blatant Ryu knock-off in FH) to be in some game I've never heard of until I visited Wikipedia.
I got one more shit game to share before it's smooth sailing with good titles.
Final Fight: Revenge Developer/Publisher: Capcom Platform(s): Arcade(1999), Sega Saturn(2000), Playstation(*shrugs*)
But it's Final Fight?!?! Yeah well they screwed the...Fight(DOHOHO) on this one.
Capcom's classic "beat-em-up" series Final Fight (which debuted in arcades back in 1989) featured some of the most memorable characters I've seen, some which have crossed over into Capcom's Street Fighter Alpha series.(Cody, Guy, <3Sodom<3)
But for some reason, Capcom USA decided to re-make the FF franchise in 3D..And I think that's this game's worst enemy. The theme is gritty and street-like, with most stages in fact, being on or close to some sort of city street; and most of which looking quite ugly to say the least. Low-res 2D images that wrap around a horribly textured square ground pretty much describes every stage in the game. Also, it's shit.
The gameplay is as bad as the graphics. Very slow and clunky. The crappy animation makes it worse. Characters don't have many moves, which means (if you actually bothered to play this game >_>) you'll be seeing a lot of spamming, and also hearing the characters say the same stupid things over and over. The super moves are somewhat entertaining... For example: Eddy E. runs you over in a police car, Poison does a pole dance, El Gado breaks your bones, and Hugo squishes you under his big ass...Classy motherfucker.
That's right folks, in order to do a super you need to spin around in a "ready to take a shit" position.
Fighters in the game are able to pick up weapons off of the ground like knives, swords, guns (lots), spiked knuckles, bombs, and even a chainsaw. But most characters also have their own weapons to fight with. The weapons really let me know the game isn't taking it self seriously...I hope at least D:
As a Capcom Fanboy I am ...
DISAPPOINT(Also fix the god damned image hosting function Dtoid, KTHXBAI)
Some of my favorite Characters are in this game...and Final Fight Revenge's game play makes the game too hilarious to be taken seriously, which is ironic because the original Final Fight actually had a pretty serious tone. The character roster is also very small, with no new faces to the series, and they fucking look like lego people. Also, no characters from Final Fight 2 or Final Fight 3.
So much more could have been done.
Let the good TITLES roll!(I'm so fucking crispy with this shit mang ;})
Urban Reign Publisher/Developer: Namco Platform: Playstation 2(2005 NA)(2005 JP)(2006 PAL)
Urban Reign is a 3D street brawling/beat-em-up by Namco, featuring a 1-player story mode with 100 missions (which can be done co-op ^_^), and about 60 characters to choose from. The game also packs an entertaining 2-to-4 player VS mode. With a tone similar tone to Capcom's classic Final Fight, Urban Reign features a wide variety of fighters ranging from random street thugs to flashy martial artists. Some fighters seem thrown in just as "fillers", but others do have some well thought out and entertaining fighting styles (some based on real martial arts, like Tekken).
Speaking of Tekken, Urban Reign borrowed quite a few animations from the Tekken series, which gives the game an edge over all others in the 'beat-em-up' genre. From the way characters react when they're hit to the extra 'omph' that moves have when they connect, the animation definitely resembles Namco's hard-hitting Tekken franchise (which Tekken fans can appreciate).
This is honestly one of the best beat-em-ups I've ever played. Urban Reign has a fairly solid fighting system for a 1 on 1 fight, that also works quite well with a free-for-all 4 player battle. Characters don't have the very deep movelists, but the ability of characters to freely move in the environment, pick up weapons, throw objects, give instructions to AI partners, and pull off moves on multiple opponents at once makes up for the lack of moves.
The fighting system features insane combo possibilities, dodges/counters, double team attacks, tons of throws and grappling moves, and free roaming. As well as the ability to "run fast" while freely roaming which opens up special abilities like sweeping, running up walls, or even running up other characters. There are also unblockable moves that make you invulnerable while you attack. Which is likely the biggest quirk of the gameplay, but it actually makes for some pretty interesting battles. And thankfully, you can also "lock on" to your opponents; which is a key element in learning how to play. Me and my friends had blast with this game, I'm certain we'll be playing this a lot more.
Urban Reign is an underrated, fun little game. Required for this fun are (1.) a multi-tap and (2) some friends who enjoy violence. There's so much action going on sometimes that the fights appear to be choreographed, and wont fail to awe anyone who's watching in the crowd. So anyway, where's my next gen Urban Reign 2 Namco?! MAKE IT HAPPEN RIGHT THE FUCK MEOW.
Soul Edge was the first "3D weapon based fighting game" I've been told. Soul Blade is the Playstation exclusive home version which I played. It has a pretty epic intro, improved visuals from the arcade version, and a fun Weapon Master story mode where players could collect a variety of weapons per character, each with their own special abilities.
The gameplay is solid for its time, but seems to be at a slower pace when compared to other fighters. The frame rate of 30 frames per second also kept the pace sluggish at times. Still, Soul Edge/Blade offers very unique gameplay elements, it introduced "ring outs" to the fighting game world, as well as "weapon disarms," where fighters actually lost weapons and had to continue fighting empty-handed. Weapon disarms didn't happen often though, so they weren't a big part of the gameplay. Ring outs, on the other hand, were a very significant part of the gameplay, an idea that has been "borrowed" from the likes of Virtua Fighter.
Soul Edge/Blade was the beginning of what became a huge 3D fighting game series. Soul Calibur re-invented the series.
Also, I like this game.
Now for this last game I'm gonna be pretty out there...
Tatsunoko Fight Developer/Publisher: Takara Platform(s): Playstation (2000 / Japan only)
If there can be a collective of Super Friends, why not a cabal of supervillains? The forces of evil from the various animè series created by Tatsunoko Studios have merged their powers, so the heroes of those same universes must join forces to save us all. This saving takes the form of a lot of unarmed combat - you can probably figure out what to do from here.
You must do battle with the great villains of those various shows - or even other heroes, in Vs. mode. Series whoses characters are included are Gatchaman (better known as Battle Of The Planets in the U.S.), Tekkaman, Casshan, and Polymer The Ha-Ri-Ken Fighter.
...I found it pretty generic :/ It plays a lot like Alpha 2(My favorite fighter of all time/SF:IV a close second ;>) so getting in and playing isn't all that difficult. Both the animation and gameplay are sub-par at their best.
It's more of a fan service to those who have followed Tatsunoko's francheses over the years, and I'm sure anyone who'd call themselves a Tatsunoko fan would pretty much love this game for "nostalgia value" alone.
But its not very good. Oh well, TvC's coming stateside officially now.
The arcade was already a shadow of its former self at the time, 1999, but my Gaming was still born in one. Well not exactly, it wasn't even an arcade really. But it had arcade machines, fat obnoxious elitists, and sticky shit on the floor. This place was called El Chilito.
Picture taken 3 years ago, who knows what happened to that place now...
I was about 6 or 7 in age when I first laid eyes to my first video game. Many of you have probably never cared for it, let alone even seen it. The game was the 4th Marvel and Capcom made together. This was really testing the waters before the ever popular Marvel VS. Capcom and its sequel came out. Once I touched the arcade stick and buttons, I was hooked. Every day from school I would spend roughly $5 at the beginning. But as time went on and my skill increased, I would spend maybe $.25 to $.75 in 3 hours near the end of my time with it.The game's actual story was Bullshit. I don't think anyone could tell you what it was. The gameplay was similar to X-Men Vs. Street Fighter, and by similar I mean exactly the same.
Lets get to the fucking point, the game was Marvel Super Heroes VS. Street Fighter.
YES
I had a fun time with this game, Playing against people was always hard since my hands weren't as developed for fighters at the time, but it was great to experience the way the game was meant to be played. As a result, singleplayer was never really played. If someone tried, another kid(me more than likely) would pop in and start the fun.
Basic MS Paint skill FTW.
I never even played the single player until an early morning of summer break when it was just me in the place, so I thought "why not?" lets see what this game's story is. In 5 minutes I reached the announced final boss, a huge dude named Apocalypse. My Spiderman/Wolverine tag team took his ass out pretty quickly(I didn't use any SF characters since I never heard of the franchise before, for shame I'm sure). I thought this was the end. I wanted my initials on the top ten list, HIG. But then HE showed up.
Hell of a first Final Boss
Being 6 or 7 at the time I thought yay! A reward for beating the game, an extra fight! No problem.... I was wrong. He seemed to me just as a 'Black robot Ryu', now that I remember these childhood memories. The match starts, my hands are ready for anything. At least I thought they were, I didn't understand what started to happen. He was overpowering and faster than everyone else before. His robot arm would shoot off and had a homing ability that would beat out every thing I tried to pull off. His supers were doing 60% to 75% damage. His Tatsumaki (hurricane kick) was doing 45%. And his teleport ability was maddening...
I felt cheated as the fucker beat me, so much that I cried... I would then come back for weeks with only a desire to kick the shit out of him. My parents soon caught wind of how stressed out and focused I was in beating the game so they started to cut my time with it. This entire endeavor made me feel frustration, hopeless, and above all powerless. All this time playing as Wolvie and Spidey amounting to nothing.
Pic from my comic book collection.
But I decided to keep on. I learned a devasting Spidey air combo the only other regular on that game, a guy 10 years older, taught me. I think his name was Pablo, he even watched my attempts and gave me on the spot advice. This gave me a safety net. I was thinking my journey would end soon now.
But then shit hit the fan. He came over one day to tell me he was moving to his college dorm in Riverside, California. 10 miles away. POOPY!!! My only social experience in this was gone and quarters were harder to come by since my parents decided to make things worse, they cut me off. They gave me $5 to kick his ass. 25 more chances to win or bust.
Sunday begins, last day of summer break. GO TIME. The 3 minute walk to the place was nerve destroying, so many thoughts of losing and never completing the first game I've started. I open the door, the smell of 'Birria' and 'Horchata' serves as the reminder of the setting. Lets do this shit. I assault the machine, thinking that would help my chances somehow. I would move the stick around violently, as if that would intimidate the game.
1 quarter goes in, 3 more, 5 more, etc. By my 16th try I thought about giving up, but the other 9 quarters provided hope. The clicking noise for the 17th time as I slip in another quarter is heighten to a thunderous crash.
"Please let it be this time", I plead.
READY
*deep breath*
FIGHT!!!
Spidey, my best fighter, comes up. His air combos keep Akuma's supers at bay. Thinking the computer would see a pattern in my moves, I switch to Wolverine. His ground combos do some serious damage. But Akuma is fucking Cyber, he ain't going down like a bitch. He lands a tasumaki, 45% of Wolverine gone. I decide to go all in and try Wolvie/Spidey 3 guage consuming super. Akuma FUCKING teleports through all of it. Then lands quite possibly the sexiest super in SF history, AIR-MUTHAFUCKIN-BORNE Shun Goku Satsu(his teleport grab/game over thing). The costumed Canadian is gone. Its just my 50% Spidey against a 35% Akuma. I build up some super with the air combos, Cyber Akuma fires his robot arm constantly.
I reach level 1 super guage.
MAXIUM SPIDER!!!
*closes eyes*
K.O!!!
YOU WIN
I can't tell you what the ending credits were, I was so relieved to beat the game I just pressed buttons until I could put my Initials, HIG, I was 3rd highest. After all of the shit I put myself through, I remember laughing, almost histerically. My war was over, the walk home was my parade back into normal, social life. Nothing got to me for about 3 months, the feeling of great accomplishment does that to me. I was 'the shit'.
Heres the final boss in action.
Just imagine a 7 year old whining during the entire thing
Have you ever played a game to the point that you cant stop thinking about it?
Well I will have you know that SF:IV is that game for me right now. After release and all during spring break, which is over for me now as of Sunday, I was only thinking of Ken, his moves and how can I use them to my advantage against each character respectively. My social life has suffered. Neglecting friends and family was hard, at least my girl made it hard. But I have logged in almost 200 hours in SF:IV, and I see myself continuing that for a very long time. The game is my life source at the moment.
But the problem here, and my rant, is that some of the hardcore players have shown disdain to SF:IV.
And in some of the SRK and CAPCOM-MUNITY forums this is playing out like a broken record to me. Hell, I have seen some of the complaints even be called 'constructive critism'.
QUE POCA MADRE!!!
This gets a sour taste in my mouth, the bitching... constructive criticism is not the same as bitching.
I remember a time where SF:IV was never gonna happen, and people bitched.
When we got it at last, people bitched.
And before that, people bitched during SF3 when the returning characters were only like 4. And now people are bitching when there is mostly returning characters.
People bitched at the still picture endings in the arcade version, and bitched a lot more when we got animated prologues and endings on the consoles...
You see the pattern? It's depressing. In my eyes SF:IV was marketed and designed like a new IP would, with very little risk. And Capcom as a business made the right choice IMO and it left them in a really good position, and an even better position for us, the fans. Assuming Capcom are pleased with SF:IV, they will allow SF:V and let the team get more creative, allowing Ono (hopefully, I liked his decisions for the most part) to have more liberty with the character designs, story, gameplay and of course most likely in game cutscenes since the budget of a supposed SF:V after this successful SF:IV will be steeper.
Don't get me wrong, I am not saying this is necessarily a bad thing, this bitching. Because people expected more from SFIV, and who wouldn't expect more from a sequel to one of the biggest franchises in the gaming industry? Especially after a 10 year hiatus. But we need to realize SF:IV on most levels DELIVERED but above all it achieved the most important goal some fighter fans have forgotten, it has re-ignited the series, I would go as far as to say maybe even the genre.
SF:IV set the stage for a revival and hopefully a new line of equally successful sequels.
And this leaves a resounding FUCK YEAH! in my mind.
My name is de BLOO.(I'll stop treating you like a 5 year old now.)
This is my third attempt at an intro, since my first attempt was utter garbage. I should have read the new member Survival guide, but being a machosist really doesn't leave much room to take advice. My second one was this one, but I accidently pressed publish while still working on it a few days ago. So here is the third.
I have been a dick.
Thanks snakedude4life for your pics! I Find myself saving a lot of your images.
I have been treating this site like I would any stupid vidoegame site. I was just here to pass some time. Just here to fuck around and hide behind 'teh internetz'. In hindsight, I was just a bit of a troll. I thought I was getting the most out of here. I was wrong. Oh so very wrong.
Dtoid staff and members have shown me that this place is more than just a videogame website. A lot more, even over 9000. Destructoid is an experience. Its a slow but steady movement. Its a true, enthralling bastion to those willing to enter and progress with the site and its members. Members like Togail, who share their awesome talents and their passions here. Or Haxan, who exemplifies the Dtoid Standard. And then there is Rab, who is just...Rab :]
I want in.
I have been here for almost 2 or 3 months now so maybe some of you know the quality of my comments. Which are well over 250 comments, most of it is shit, most of it was never responded to, Hell... I have ended all activity on the comments after I spew some shit before.
I hope this can change, I am going to start putting some actual thought and effort now in my posts, comments, etc.
BLOO, you normal person you, Why would you even bother? You probably are(n't) saying.
Well thats the power this site and its community has, you're making an idiot to try to better himself and stop his dick tendencies. I just hope you guys can hear me out.
My name is Hector.
Here I am rendered in real time:
5 things you dont (want to) know about de BLOO.
1. Im a relatively noob gamer. I have had a console since the Genesis(Mega Drive), but I dont have many memories of playing it. Its only been since the last gen (PS2) that I have begun to really get into gaming.
2. I have a very small comic book collection, mostly Marvel. Here is a pic of my most valuable one.
Sorry about the glare, It was either that or blurry mess.
Its signed by the artist, Todd McFarlane. It is the gold edition and it was valued at $25 almost 5 years ago.Dont know how much it's valued now. The Comic is entitled: Spiderman: The Legend of the Arachknight.
3. I used to dream about becoming a pro futbol (soccer) player and playing in my favorite team, Club Deportivo Guadalajara But I had an injury at the age of 13, the Doc said I should give it up. So I have. :'(
I can still walk and run. But extensive running makes my left leg, my kicking leg, swell a lot.
4. I love Street Fighter IV. Ever since I purchased it I can't stop playing, even though I am not very good. I main as, you guessed it, Ken.
I play a lot. I'm currently ranked 386 on XBL for Ranked Match Wins. I currently have engaged in 1357 fights, and came out victorious in 933 of them. My win rate is 68.75%. My longest win streak was 34, until a Sagat showed up.
Oh, Togail's Cammy and Rab's Balrog are fucking nauseating. That is all.
Also, If you play SF:IV and still haven't, join Rab's Group he has started on sftournaments.com, Rab has reported that we are the 4th most popular group already there, a few more Dtoiders will push us to the top. The Destructoid invasion begins NAOW
5. I love Sunday. This day is like a reset button for my family.
Living in a family like mine can get pretty hostile. Sunday is where the magic happens. Every sunday breakfast plays out the same, we start either bitter or mad at what has happened in the week, but end happy and reunited as a family. I'm usually the catalyst, I have been told Im funny, so I use that to bring the family skirmishes down. Sundays cant come soon enough.
A quick search of Domingo on Tinypic.com came up with this. Shout out to Bwark-Kupo for indirectly linking me to the site.
This took me forever to make. Learning the BBcode and how to resize photos is time consuming, so was the editing. This is also my first attempt at a blog ever, I thought Dtoid was the perfect place to pop that cherry. Sorry If I have wasted your time or pushed you blog down, I've seen people get pissed off about that.
I just needed to at least try...
[Side Note: My banner is broken, I tried to upload a pic I created in ms paint, at least seven times now. If anyone can help me, that would be great. Enough of my bickering.]
I'm a 17 year old Mexican American. My name is Hector.
My gaming started at my local money laundering sport's bar/restuarant. They had some arcade Machines like Metal Slug 3, Puzzle Bobble, and My favorite Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter.
But sadly the place is under new, anti-gaming, management that foolishly THREW away those machines at the local dump... I was planning to buy MSH Vs. SF from them. :'[
I had a Sega Genesis(Mega Drive), but the only game I had was *le sigh* Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers:The Movie:The game...
Soon after I purchased the N64, I never heard of Zelda those days, for shame I'm sure. Just ended up playing Smash Bros. and a game called WAR GODS, I loved it. Looking back now, WAR GODS was utter shit.
Then I bought a PS2, That's when "I got into gaming"...I guess that's the best way to phrase that?
Now I'm playing with the 360. It's fun. I share my 360 with my gf and 3 of our friends.
Games I currently play(all 360) in no order :
Street Fighter IV[duh]
HD REMIX
Marvel vs Capcom 2
Gears of War 2
Halo 3
Peggle
Tetris Splash
CoD4: MW
Metal Slug 3
Puzzle Fighter HD
TMNT:ARCADE 1989
