I like new games because I'm box-obsessed. If it has a sticker on the box, I don't want to buy it. Basically, I = L2GooGone
"went straight to the used game section, while he went straight to the used game section."
I know what you meant, but you may want to edit that.
Also, I'm always a little skeptical of used games, but I'm a sucker for deals.
@Thefil - If you use water or something to remove the glue carefully you can remove the sticker without leaving those crappy tear marks.
I've done it dozens of times when I've bought a used game and then, when I didn't like it, have turned around and sold it to other stores for more than I paid for it because they think its new.
I am all for used games, on account of my frugality. I think around half of my games have that yellow "used" Gamestop tag. I usually only buy new if there aren't used copies and it's the only copy left. And most of the time there really isn't much of a difference between new and used, but I have gotten scratched up crap. I only accept those for games I've been searching for for a long while.
Also, in the first few paragraphs, you mixed up "used" and "new" several times, makes it a little hard to read at first. Just a tip.
Of course Gamestop would much rather your friend buy a used game- they make more money off them. Meanwhile the publisher gets absolutely nothing from the sale. So if you wanna be sure we keep getting "niche" games like Zack & Wiki or Odin Sphere, you gotta buy em new. For blockbuster games this is less of a problem.
One more thing aboutused games, though- sometimes they don't work. I just got a scratched-up copy of Downhill Domination from Gamestop.com and it won't load Career mode. Just freezes. Wrote an e-mail to customer service, but I still don't know what they plan to do about it.
Used games are fine, depending on the condition. I've walked into Gamestop and seen both completely destroyed games and almost new games. I'll never buy a used game if it doesn't include the original case and manual, though.
I buy them new because the developer gets money. If I buy it used im contribuing to Gamestop's CEO bonuses.
Plus most new release games are 54 or 56 bucks used so you only save 5 bucks. Its better to spend that extra 5 - 10 buck so that the people who made the game get your money.
I find the price difference between used and new games so negligible that you might as well buy it new and also the cases are more often in better condition. More importantly though as Jack said, buying it new means that the developers gets some of the money whereas buying it new means they get nothing and so buying used games is bad for the industry.
I was an Assistant Manager at GameStop a couple of years ago.
I go to GameCrazy, they give you more for your trade-ins (if you're so inclined) and they have better customer service and membership deals. Plus they'll repair your scratched disks for free if you have a membership.
Also with used games, It's not like they're going to give you some shotty, scratched up crap, they usually check the backs of the games before taking them
Not true. I've gotten some fucked up discs from Gameshit before
"the cashier started to own him with his knowledge"
Wow, you are a tool. Your buddy likes new games because we've all seen what people CAN do to their copies before trading them in.
I only buy new or off ebay where the seller has decent pictures because I need to ensure that the pages of the manual and/or the case wasn't used to wipe the previous owners ass after eating mexican food. I've seen plenty of used copies of games at Gamestop that require a hazmat team to handle without catching diseases.
Simple fix: Pirate. ARRRRRR
For real though, buy them new, and buy them from somewhere other than gamestop/eb.
Lol some of your comments are funny.
I'm a tool so what.
Recently I have bought Shadow of the Colossus, Prey, Quake 4, Sly 1, Jak 1, Ratchet and Clank 1, Beyond Good and Evil, Lost Planet, The Orange Box, God of War 1 and 2, and a load of other games and they have all ben in good condition.
By the way, I edited this blog for all you Harvard Scholars lol.
I got a used copy of Twin Snakes. Disc 1 worked well, disk 2 doesn't.
Buyer beware?
I used to be a huge believer in game recycling; I almost always bought titles used, then sell 'em back as soon as I completed them. Somewhere along the way, I stopped getting back any money from my trade-ins, partly because I was taking longer to complete games that were already several years old, so I collected them. On the other hand, this means I now own copies of Parappa and UmJammer Lammy, Gitaroo Man, Amplitude, and Beyond Good and Evil. I still trust buying used games; I just won't sell 'em anymore.
Yeah, I never sell any games.
I buy used games from Gamestop all the time, but I've started messing around with Goozex lately. I'll have to see if it works out better after I trade a few more games in and get one in return.
The two Goozex users I've dealt with so far have been very cool, especially considering the fact that I mixed up the labels and sent the wrong games to the wrong people.
I've seen this Goozex but never really gave it much thought, do you like it Char?
Used games aren't necessarily bad, so long as you find a place that gives you a return policy and such. Of my currently 611 games (found here) 290 of them are used. I test all of them immediately when I get home and look at the condition of them prior to buying them. I've never had an issue with the ones I've gotten so far. Also, getting the "Used" stickers and all off aren't actually as difficult as most people make it out to be, as some masking tape, rubbing alcohol, and cotton balls can take off even the most resiliant stickers in a couple minutes, that also includes permanent marker.
I do prefer new games, but as Hoodie said, I'll instantaneously buy any Atlus/NIS/niche type of games that you KNOW are going to disappear in a month or so, plus I feel I'm supporting some of the smaller, but very awesome companies. Huge hit titles like Super Mario Galaxy and such, while super awesome, I wait to buy until they're like $20 - $30, or cheap at a place like Cash Converters, because you know they'll be around for a long time. The whole concept of Used games and all at EB Games (I'm from Canada) is pretty terrible, as if they actually made the Used games CHEAP enough, it might be worth it.
i'm the friend in here, and unlike a lot of my other friends, i don't trade games back in, i keep them.. it's a collection for me, and i try to keep them in the best shape i can just in case i want to go back and play through something..
hell i've played through wind waker like 5 times now...
and i've seen some games that are completely destroyed when ppl trade them in.. i just don't feel like going through the hassle of returning it for another one.. i'm lazy.. i'd rather spend a few extra bucks to get something that i know wasn't trashed by someone..
