Why do Michael Crichton novels suck so bad now?
david morgar | 11:27 PM on 04.22.2008 15 comments

Do you remember the good ol' times when a Crichton novel would mean one full afternoon/night of reading an interesting thriller while being fed lots of scientific/technical facts on the way? Aren't you sad that ever since Timeline (released like 10 years ago) there hasn't been anythign remotely good written by him?

Crap, I mean, Prey was alright, but it wasn't that interesting in the end. And State of Fear and Next were so lazily written, where no real connection could be made with the characters and the bunch of piled up storylines served only as fillers.

He is the guy that made dinosaurs cool, got God's sake (along with Spielberg, I know...), why can't he be good anymore...

Do you think that if we gathered a shitload of signatures and send them to him asking him not to be a cashwhore with his next novel, he he'd actually write something interesting for a change?

He needs to write a book that involves dinosaurs with lasers fighting a zombie army led by Zombie Jesus.

I agree 100%. I used to love Jurassic Park and Lost World, and liked TimeLine and Prey just fine. Then I was given Next as a Christmas gift when it came out and only made it a little bit in before closing the book forever. I just couldn't get into it...

I love Jurassic Park and The Lost World. Two of the most fun and interesting books I've ever read. I also have a book called "The Science of Jurassic Park" that delves in to all the nitty gritty details about genetics, fossils and pretty much all the methods used in the movie. Highly recommend it for any JP fan :D

I watched the movies as a kid, and still love them to this day. Jurassic Park is still an amazing classic, but Lost World has too much family interest with Iain's kid and girlfriend. ITS ABOUT DINOSAURS DAMMIT! I DO NOT CARE ABOUT HER BLACK GYMNASTICS BULLSHIT.

...achem, anyway. To answer your question. No, I don't think he will ever stop being a cashwhore :(

Crichton has pretty much consistently sucked in every book he's written past The Andromeda Strain, if you ask me.

Didn't he write that book about global warming or some shit? I could not get past 10 pages in there.

@Conrad

You really think that? I think that Andromeda Strain and Congo are his only two pre - Prey novels that sucked

I think it was state of fear...

I am a big fan of Jurassic Park and Rising Sun, but yeah I think he started to go downhill with Timeline, hell Airframe was 50/50. I'm thinking he needs to find new subjects, or at least improve the ones he has.

Yeah, State of fear was the boring as hell global warming one. Hell, what a piece of shit of a novel. I've never met anyone who's said he liked it. I actually finished the whole thing hoping it would get better, but it's just kind of childish and incredibly badly written.

I have to agree with Deftone, Rising Sun was just amazing. If anyone wants to spend $5 - $10 dollars on quality entertainment, buy that novel.

He's too busy writing novels peddling right wing propaganda to write anything worth while. He was incredibly over rated anyway. Jimmy and the Clone-a-saurus indeed...

WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!?

.......

...I mean thank you, come again.

Wait! When exactly were dinosaurs uncool to any degree, let alone to a point where they needed MC to give them a coolness injection? On every other point I agree.

Also, I just watched WestWorld again a couple of weeks ago. That movie was effing epic (until the lackluster ending). He actually had screenwriting/directing chops. Now he cashes Jurassic Park checks professionally. Sad time now.

Haxan, don't forget about all the ER checks too...

Don't get me started on ER...
