Every once in a while, a game comes around that, for some reason, knocks you on your ass. It’s not always the same game for everyone. It’s so much more than you expected it to be, and it holds a special place in your gaming heart.
For me, Eternal Darkness is one of those games. I feel bad for anyone who has not experienced it. No game has played the player as much as Eternal Darkness, and I’m disappointed that no game has tried since. It had so many memorable moments.
When your sanity meter would start to fill up it would:
Start off with simple things like hearing the door knock or the floor creaking. Then it might escalate to walking into a bathroom with an empty bathtub then a quick flash of the bathtub full of blood and you’re in it!
But when the sanity meter really got good was the following:
After about 1 – 2 hours of play a screen pops up that says “Thank you for playing the demo. Now go out and buy the full version.” But then the game continues on because it is the full version. LOL.
Late in the game, after you save your game, it acts like you told it to delete all of your saves. WTF? But then it flashes back to reality and your saves are just fine.
You’ll run down a hallway and your head will suddenly get chopped off, or your body will suddenly grow too large for the room. But then you flash back to reality.
You enter a hallway you already cleared, only to find half a dozen monsters killing you while your screen flashes that your controller is disconnected…then you flash back to the reality of an empty room and you’re fine. This one really made me crap my pants.
This game was a trip on acid, and truly scared me in a way that I haven’t been scared before (Why the f#*k is my memory card deleting?!!). And I haven’t even mentioned how awesome the adult storyline was that took place or several centuries and characters. What about the voice acting? Some of the best I’ve ever heard. Music? Top-notch.
Even with the old-gen graphics and all, this game would be awesome. I played through it 3 times, and I almost never play through a game more than once. If you haven’t played Eternal Darkness then I feel bad for you. Check it out, now!
I've played through it once. I always wanted to play though again, but there always seems to be some other game I'd rather play.
One of the best games ever...
My favorite freak-out was when I ran into a room and started sinking into the floor.
so many people have said " no one has played this but it is amazing" for so many years, im sure anyone who wanted to play it has played it.
I always liked the part where you walk into a room only to spontaneously die and be greeted with a "Game Over" screen.
Man when you said Eternal Darkness, I thought of Eternal Champions; and that game was trash.
It should automatically be assumed on this site that if there was some "special game" that only you and you alone played in your group of friends, then yes, we all played that one game too.
Ico, Katamari, REZ, JSR, Seaman, we all owned a Dreamcast, and yes, we all played Quest 64.
Lol it is one of the best GCubes. It scared the shit out of me when I saved the game and it said "deleting file". LOL, I turned off my system.
*shudders at quest 64 reference*
Loved the way it messed with my head but got bored with the gameplay. Only beat it once.
Never bring up Quest 64 again...seriously.
lol @ Quest 64
I'm with Cowzilla here. I really enjoyed the game at first, but the gameplay wore thin very quickly to me. I made it to the end, but never finished it.
I've wanted to play this, just haven't seen it anywhere....
I've always really wanted to play the game, but have never been able to find a copy. Maybe I'll have to start ebay hunting.
This game is absolutely fantastic, and I, too, feel bad for anybody who hasn't played it. They've missed out on a gaming masterpiece.
I beat it all 4 times. Loved it.
I never played Quest 64, Ico, or Katamari.
I really liked how the game actually messed with you. Even though I knew about them, they were so well done that when they came you honestly thought the Gamecube turned off or reset or you save was lost.
The gameplay and was solid, but a little repetitive especially if you wanted to get the Mantorok ending.
ED is a fantastic game, one of the first games I bought for GC
Lol, that second pic.... he's already looking into my soul. Thanks for the nightmare material you ass!
OH! I forgot about when the game acts like the power goes out and your T.V. shuts off! Classic.
And the comment about everyone on this site has played "the games that no one else has played"...yea, you're probably right, lol.
By the way, I bought this game for $10 at Gamestop. The best $10 spent ever.
I rented from Blockbuster when it first came out. I was so damn happy that I was the one who got the last copy to rent out. After playing I needed that game but I was 16 and jobless at the time, now more than ever I want to buy that game but something keeps holding me back. I consider it one of the best horror video games along with Sanitarium and Silent Hill.
"The fools cast away their hopes of salvation by locking me in this damned asylum! MAY THE RATS EAT YOUR EYES! I am now lost to your cause!"
I love this game.
I remember the bathroom on the second floor, and how the scream from it always horrified me.
It's kind of funny, I actually went and replayed this game a few weeks ago. Perfect timing. I agree that it's a unique experience but I think, with the exception of those new to the gaming world, everyone who wanted a piece of this game got it.
Great great game that I need to go back and finish.
only reason to own a GC
One of the first games i got for the GC.
