About dTunes:
dTunes originally started as a blog in which I would showcase a new band every week. Soon, I moved on to themes. Every video was meant to be suggested by the community, the themes too. Unfortunately, my own personal tastes kept getting in the way. This time I intend to pick a community member from the Google Group that I made (send me your email if you want in) and let them post their favorite music for a week. By getting rid of the middle man (me) I intend on bringing to life my initial image of dTunes, a place where the community can enrich itself and create a better understanding on the individual members of the community by exploring their personal tastes.

Basically, I want to put the unity in community.

dTunes: Takeshi's week, Day 5
dTunes | 2:24 PM on 10.02.2009 17 comments

After all the musical violence of the last couple of days it is finally time to change things up a bit. Which is the understatement of the year. No more wailing guitars, ear drum ripping vocals and satanic drums. I'm going to post some Classical music, some Video Game soundtracks, some Movie soundtracks, some old and some new tunes. They've got one thing in common. They will make you weep like a baby. Take out your handkerchiefs, it's time to meet my soft side.

Tearjerkers incoming.

Gregorio Allegri - Miserere mei, Deus

(pic is not by Allegri. It's Francesco Scarlatti's version of Miserere. © The British Library)

More info about this piece can be found on Classical.net

Samuel Barber - Adagio for Strings op.11

Leonard Slatkin Conducts the BBC Orchestra on September 15 2001 in honor of those who lost their lives a few days prior. Visuals from BBC's 'Last Night of the Proms' and ABC's 'Report from ground zero'.

Didn't have this particular video in mind but it is the best version I've heard.

You might/will recognize it from something. It's been in many great movies like Platoon, The Elephant Man and Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (The Fabulous Destiny of Amelie Poulain). But there is this video game too. I don't know if the song was in the actual game but I know it's in the trailer. It reminded me of 2001: A Space Odyssey because of the Space and Classical music combination. But more about that later.

Beethoven - String Quartet in C-sharp minor

Band of Brothers, one of the best series I've ever seen. This particular piece is played during Episode 9 - Why we Fight. I don't want to show that video here because I'm sure some of you are not going to like it because it's quite heavy. It tore my heart apart. If you want to know what I'm talking about check this video.

I wanted to post a video of Edward "Babe" Heffron singing Bridget O'Flynn. But it's nowhere to be found. He sang it during the credits of the Band of Brothers - Special Feature.

Next up are three of the best ending titles in the history of video games. Might contain Spoilers. Credits containing spoilers? Well, we're talking about Kojima here so yeah, there are spoilers.

Rika Muranaka - The Best is yet to Come

Starsailor - Way to Fall (plus extra songs)

Ennio Morricone - Here's to You (plus extra songs)

No Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty ending title. That one just didn't have it. For me that is.

Eddie Vedder - Long Nights.

Eddie Vedder composed and recorded the whole soundtrack for Into the Wild. I could've posted pretty much every song here because they're all very beautiful. I had to post this particular song because there a bit of a story behind it.

My best friend introduced me to this great album and movie. When we were listening to it she started to sing along with this song. It's was the most beautiful thing I've ever heard. It's hard to tell how someones voice sounds. But if I had to describe hers I would say it sounds like a beautiful valley with trees on a sunny autumn afternoon. You know, with a lot of warm red and yellow colors. I think you can make an impression with that description. I wanted to make her sing it again and record it. But I'd rather keep it for myself, the memory of it is heart warming.

Joe Hisaishi - Summer

Joe Hisaishi composed many beautiful soundtracks. This is my all time favorite. Not only because of the song itself but also because of the movie it is from. Kikujiro No Natsu (Kikujiro's Summer) directed by Takeshi Kitano. I guess this Music Blog turns out to be some kind of Movie blog as well. Please do yourself a favor and watch this great movie.

Leonard Cohen - Waiting for a Miracle

Leonard Cohen, that's all I really have to say. From the Natural Born Killers soundtrack. Great movie and great soundtrack.

Michael Nyman - The Sacrifice

Don't really know what to say here. It's been so long since I've seen the movie. I can only remember a couple of scenes but I do know the soundtrack by heart. Nyman did an excellent job.

Two Dutch bands incoming. The first one is really new (first album recorded in February of this year), the second one quite old (first album recorded in the 60's).

Kyteman - Sorry

Kyteman wrote this song because his girlfriend broke up with him after 6 years. I can't confirm this but it fits. A lot of great songs are written out of sorrow.

Cuby and the Blizzards - Window of my Eyes

Originally recorded in the 60's. This is a more recent version. I didn't want to post this version but all the other video's are so dumb. It's still a gorgeous song though. You can find the other original version here.

BONUS VIDEO:
Ennio Morricone - Here's to You

Which version do you think is better? I'm going for the MGS4 one but I'm totally biased.

THE BONUS VIDEO THAT MAKES ALL OTHER VIDEOS OBSOLETE:

Make sure you've got some spare time for this is an epic long one. It's the entire 24 minute ending scene from 2001: A Space Odyssey synced to the Pink Floyd song Echoes.

Ladies and Gentlemen, it's done. The show is over. I could and want to do this for a couple more weeks but it's time to let someone else present their songs. It was great. Thanks for listening everybody.

Yours,

Takeshi

Adagio for Strings is at it's best when set to slow-motion footage of people dying.

Here's to You is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, and Lizbeth's version is divine.

Some good music here. The first time I heard Adagio was in the film Lorenzo's Oil. What a heartbreaking movie...

You ain't seen nothing yet. When it's my turn, I'm turning my elitist snob/film buff dial up to 11.

Takeshi, I fucking completely adore you in the most platonic of ways.

Also, Kikujiro. It's my like test-movie to show a girl if I really like her. If She doesn't like it, there's no future.

Thanks Haxan, I'm pretty much doing the same thing with every Kitano and Kubrick movie. Recently added Paper Moon to that list.

I'm still alone.

There are truly few women of taste.

And Paper Moon, I just won't talk to anyone that dislikes that film.

So good to watch that movie and start to talk about having kids afterwards.
