About dTunes:
dTunes originally started as a blog in which I would showcase a new band every week. Soon, I moved on to themes. Every video was meant to be suggested by the community, the themes too. Unfortunately, my own personal tastes kept getting in the way. This time I intend to pick a community member from the Google Group that I made (send me your email if you want in) and let them post their favorite music for a week. By getting rid of the middle man (me) I intend on bringing to life my initial image of dTunes, a place where the community can enrich itself and create a better understanding on the individual members of the community by exploring their personal tastes.
Today is 90s East Coast Rap day. A LOT of this is VERY NSFW, so in the very least turn down your speakers. I'm sure some of this will be pretty obscure; feel free to leave hate in the comments!
Tomorrow's theme: Video Game Related! Soundtracks from games.
Remember, dTunes is always looking for new people! Info is in the sidebar; SHARE!
Blahzay Blahzay : Danger
Nice sample
M.O.P. : How About Some Hardcore
These guys pretty much defined hardcore in the 90s, and they're still active today.
Smoothe da Hustler ft. Trigger tha Gambler : Broken Language
Very hardcore, and an innovative flow. You can tell that they're brothers the way they bounce off of each other. I met them briefly; very cool cats.
BONUS: Redman and Method Man did a great cover of this song.
Method Man & Redman - Broken Language
Das EFX : Mic Checka
A pretty unique flow, which was then stolen by EVERYONE. Iggity was apparently the autotune of the 90s.
BONUS: Redman and Method Man covered this song too!
Method Man & Redman : Cheka
Wu-Tang Clan : Protect Ya Neck
A diverse group of MC's from Staten Island. One of hip hop's first supergroups, I believe.
Brand Nubian : Punks Jump Up To Get Beat Down
Brand Nubian is usually a conscious rap group. Not here. Damn Brooklyn was rough in the 90s!
Cypress Hill : Hand on the Pump
B-Real's nasal flow is distinctive. Classic CH here.
Beatnuts : Reign Of The Tec
The last line, and the imagery behind it, pretty much dooms this group to hell.
Gang Starr - Just To Get A Rep
If there was a hip-hop hall of fame, Premier would be in for his production, and Guru for his rhymes.
BONUS:
Biggie Smalls - Juicy
dTunes needs YOU!!! Follow the info in the sidebar, and share your favorites with the community!
Haha, I grew up on the Beatnuts. Really used to love their stuff, along with Wu-Tang. Did you ever hear the Soul Assassins or The Firm? Sort of like east coast rap supergroups (I think they were both east coast) and, as I remember, pretty original stuff.
Goddammit who got this rap in my Dtoid? I'm curious to see what you're coming up with tomorrow. I'm pretty sure it's not the same as what I've got in store but it would be cool and suck at the same time if you do. Then I will have to find some new tunes. No big deal really because I'm sure I could fill a whole year of dTunes.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I have! They were both awesome! I feel bad because I left so many good songs out.
