About Me
I don't personally subscribe to all of this "hardcoreness", but if you must know... My first memories are of Super Mario Bros. I maintained a paper route for six years for the single purpose of purchasing videogames. I read wikipedia to learn the plots of games I don't have time to play. I spend more on videogames than on anything else, I ride a bike so I have more money for videogames. I can't play any one game for an extended period, because I have an uncontrollable compulsion to play all of them.

My shitty online comic. Updates never.

Recently for some reason my windows installation decided to fail. I tired to find the source of the problem for about half an before just deciding to reinstall windows, my preferences weren't that big of a deal anyways. So after booting to the disc and going through that little song and dance, the installation failed. I have never been a windows fan, and have deep down inside always wanted to try out a little Linux. So I downloaded the install disc for the newest Ubuntu on my laptop and installed away. I didn't have any problems with the installation and all the files from windows seemed to have survived the transition.
I was raised on macs and the only reason I even bothered to own a windows box was because of my deep and terrible addiction to videogames. My addiction knows no boundaries and the very thought of a world of videogames unavailable, just an operating system away, drove me nuts.
Installing Linux I was a little wary as to whether my games would run. I knew there was a way to run things, but was it going to be more trouble than it was worth? I can say for sure that, for most people, it has been quite a bit of trouble. Getting games to works involves using a program called "Wine" and getting everything set up involves at least a little use of the terminal, which I know for a lot of people is a no go. However this was part of the appeal for me, and the process for getting things running never turned frustrating.

I am pretty pleased with how things have turned out. Is there anybody else out there running linux?

I've heard good things about Ubuntu -- guys I know swear by it. A close friend of mine runs it off a large USB drive and keep windows on the hard drive for games though.

When it comes to Linux, I'm a diehard Debian fanboy. But Ubuntu is pretty good too.

Wine will pretty much run any game, as long as your computer has the power to handle it.

I love Ubuntu and occasionally reinstall it to my computer in some form, but ultimately go back to Windows for some reason every time. The last few days I've been playing with it, but I had issues making it work the way I wanted it to with dual monitors.

I'm still probably going to boot it back up sometime soon when I have some free time and try to get it running the way I want it again.

I've used Wubi to install Ubuntu and try it out when Hardy was released. I'm still kind of mixed on it. while i feel that there are a lot of fun things to do on it, i really dont feel the comfort i would feel with say a mac or windows system when installing software and such. So i feel fine using it for email and web surfing, i'm not sure i would say i'm sool with using it for my only system yet.
I think when i get my new desktop i will install ubuntu on my laptop so i can get a better feel for it.

Congrats on the transition cskozmo, I've been converting friends to the linux side(Ubuntu) for over a year now, and though most have always just dual-booted it and later never used it for the2 hours they get to use it they're pretty comfortable with the experience.

You'll probably start searching for a different distro when you check out a programs homepage and it states that they're on version 5.x while the Ubuntu repositories are still dishing out the 3.2 as the latest version. At least I know thats why I went distro searching. Your best friend http://distrowatch.com/.

Ubuntu is great and frustrating at the same time. It's not as user friendly as windows, but it also offers alot more to the table, like stability, no individual annoying ass program popup updates, and security.

Think I might go and install this on my main rig today as I have nothing better to do and it sits there doing nothing much at the best of times.

I'm sticking to XP. I don't like a hassle.

And I absolutely hate the Mac OS, it frustrates me even with the limited time at my school. I don't remember that experience when I used Windows for the first time.

well ubuntu is one of the best linux distros out there. I use EEExubuntu fork for my Asus eeepc, which is a stripped Ubuntu with Gnome. It works like a charm.

Also, Konata rulez.

You mean XFCE mario?
anyhow it's always good to see someone taking the plunge after a while you'll get addicted to community and the package manager(apt rocks).
As for if I use linux well you can guess for yourself.

I'm a gentoo man, although I do use ubuntu on my desktop since I boot into it pretty infrequently, so I don't have time to compile all of my package updates. And I rarely use it for gaming. I tried this weekend, but it doesn't recognize my 360 wireless control correctly to play everyday shooter. One of the analog sticks works upside down :(

I use knoopix to recover stuff and mess with the hdds overall.
I found ubuntu a bit more restrictive than knoopix. But that was a long time ago.

You know I've literally got the last 5 releases sitting on my shelf. Every time they release a new stable version I have them send me a CD. I haven't actually even tried any of them yet, but I'll get around to it.

I have Ubuntu, have done for about 2 or 3 years, but to be honest, I don't use it nearly as much as Windows. The interface and general feel of Ubuntu is so much better than Windows, but I just can't run a lot of my favourite games on it, without massive frame-rate drops and crashes. Everyone except me seems to be able to get stuff working with WINE. TF2 > Ubuntu, so I'm not about to get rid of Windows just yet.
