(Since my son is only 2, and unable to spell or type. I will try and capture his story for him...)
It all started when my Dad got the Wii. I thought my family looked so lame flailing their arm's about, trying to beat each other in bowling or tennis. But I started to get intrigued the day my dad brought home Mario Galaxy. Watching that short little guy fly around space collecting star bits really excited me. Everyday my dad came home from work I would ask him to play. I would sit there for hours in wonder at the spectacle of Mario and his quest to find stars.
Then Mario Kart came along, and I was able to hold the steering wheel. While I couldn't really keep the kart on the track, I enjoyed every second of it. But none of these games could I play by myself. Then one day my Dad brought home a new system. He kept telling me stories about how he had played this system when he was young like me. He called it the NES (pronouncing each letter with emphasis). It was old, and not working, so we had to work on it. Here is me helping take it apart.
When we got it all back together, the first thing my Dad did was to put in a game called "Big Bird's Hide & Speak". Did I tell you I loved Sesame Street? It was simple, the graphics were blocky, the sound was horrible, and my dad kept saying something about it being "retro". In the end I didn't care about any of that. I could play this game, and it was fun!
My dad was so proud, kept calling me his "geek in training".
So if any of you are out there have kids, please start them out they way you started out. Don't spoil them on mind blowing graphics, or overly complex systems. In the end it all comes down to game play, and quality time with you.
You are cheating by using your kids!
again, awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
When you are a little older hopefully your father will teach you the importance and significance of "up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, start"
Yeah... I know cheap... but hey, Being a gamer dad for me is all about passing it on. ;)
Oh, and I really enjoyed your affair story too. Reminded me of alot of games that i used to play. Moon Patrol was the shit! and Karateka was awesome too.
So yeah, awesome...
@LarkOhiya: Yeah... can't do that, and if you haven't seen the snl skit, go here
@ZombiePlatypus: My son actually enjoys that Big Bird game the most, it is made so you only have to know 2 buttons. Perfect for his age. He still wants to watch Mario, but not nearly as much.
