About Me
I'm old, I have kids, and damn proud of both.

I am a Nintendo Fanboy, as I have grown up with them, and they with me. I finally got an Xbox 360!!! Wish I had the money to pick up the PS3. My gaming has changed a lot since the early days. Now I am more of a pick up and play when I can.

The Start of the Affair: From Wii to NES, There and Back Again
craineum | 9:15 AM on 06.09.2008 15 comments

(Since my son is only 2, and unable to spell or type. I will try and capture his story for him...)

It all started when my Dad got the Wii. I thought my family looked so lame flailing their arm's about, trying to beat each other in bowling or tennis. But I started to get intrigued the day my dad brought home Mario Galaxy. Watching that short little guy fly around space collecting star bits really excited me. Everyday my dad came home from work I would ask him to play. I would sit there for hours in wonder at the spectacle of Mario and his quest to find stars.

Then Mario Kart came along, and I was able to hold the steering wheel. While I couldn't really keep the kart on the track, I enjoyed every second of it. But none of these games could I play by myself. Then one day my Dad brought home a new system. He kept telling me stories about how he had played this system when he was young like me. He called it the NES (pronouncing each letter with emphasis). It was old, and not working, so we had to work on it. Here is me helping take it apart.

When we got it all back together, the first thing my Dad did was to put in a game called "Big Bird's Hide & Speak". Did I tell you I loved Sesame Street? It was simple, the graphics were blocky, the sound was horrible, and my dad kept saying something about it being "retro". In the end I didn't care about any of that. I could play this game, and it was fun!

My dad was so proud, kept calling me his "geek in training".

So if any of you are out there have kids, please start them out they way you started out. Don't spoil them on mind blowing graphics, or overly complex systems. In the end it all comes down to game play, and quality time with you.

I wish you the best of luck as you take your first steps into the world of gaming little man. May your adventures be filled with jumping on top of many goombas, saving many princesses, and slaying many bad guys.

When you are a little older hopefully your father will teach you the importance and significance of "up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, start"

Awesome. I've always thought that whenever I have kids I want to start 'em out on the NES, then work their way on up through the systems to whatever is current-gen at the time. Go through a kind of sped-up version of how I grew up gaming, so they won't just dismiss the old stuff... Plus starting out with only two buttons and that cross shaped d-pad for a controller would be way less daunting...

So yeah, awesome...

@nademagnet: thanks, took me a bit to do krang in illustrator, but well worth it.

@LarkOhiya: Yeah... can't do that, and if you haven't seen the snl skit, go here

@ZombiePlatypus: My son actually enjoys that Big Bird game the most, it is made so you only have to know 2 buttons. Perfect for his age. He still wants to watch Mario, but not nearly as much.

Aw, this is an adorable story -- adorable, like your son! I especially love that last photo where you made it look like he has long legs! Hats off to you, Gamer Dad, for starting off your kid at the beginning.
