I am a Nintendo Fanboy, as I have grown up with them, and they with me. I finally got an Xbox 360!!! Wish I had the money to pick up the PS3. My gaming has changed a lot since the early days. Now I am more of a pick up and play when I can.

So I recently started playing games from my past. Games that I used to be good at, or at least competent enough not to die ever 10 seconds.
This all started with the Wii. When they released Kid Icarus on Virtual Console, I just had to pick it up. And man, if I didn't fucking suck at it. Let me introduce you to the wealth of my suckage. It took me a over an hour to get past the fucking first level. And... I am not talking the whole level 1, I am just talking level 1-1. I would die from being hit too many times. I would die from falling off (no fucking scrollback!). I would die just because I was too pissed to pick up the control after slamming it down on the ground. After another few hours of ass pounding... I gave up. I set it down, and haven't played since.
(Oh, and whatever you do, don't ever search google images for wtf...)
And this just makes me sick:
I couldn't believe what had just happened. Kid Icarus used to be one of my favorites on the NES. I chalked it up to a fluke. Next came the original Zelda. And again... I got owned. I couldn't remember shit from the game. Well... I could, but only after the fact. I started saying "Oh, I remember that now".
I decided that this was just the Virtual Console railing me. So I got an NES, and started playing. First up Blaster Master, next Ikari Warrirors, then Kung Fu, Ice Hockey, Blades of Steel, holy shit... I can't fucking believe this. I can't play any NES games.
My last ditch effort... Super Mario Bros... Wait... I remember this... I know where the warps are! I can beat this in no time. I have a hard time not holding down the 'B' button, as that is how I used to roll, but all it is causing me to do now is roll to my death, and in a much faster pace than would normally happen. I FAIL.
If my 12 year old self was here watching me play... he would get pissed off grab the control and kick the shit outta me.
So why is this? Is it because I am spoiled by the new graphics? Is it because my brain can only wrap itself around these new complicated warped control schemes? Is it the old school game play? My TV that is way too big for these low res games? Am I just out of practice? It is probably all those things and more. I will blame all that other stuff because I can't believe (or let myself acknowledge) that it is because I am getting older. That I have lost just that little bit of hand/eye coordination to through me off my game, or that my memory has faded.
So I decided to slow down a little... and try some nice turn based RPG's... mmm... Dragon Warrior, how I love you so. I will pick up the action titles again, sometime soon, and when I do, I will go into it with the knowledge that I am going to suck. Because whenever you have low expectations, you are almost always pleased with the results. (I think that is the saddest thing I have ever said about myself).
Let me tell you kids it sucks getting old, so enjoy your quick reactions, and stellar memory now. Because one day, you too will get owned by your previous self.
I know what you mean. My skills atrophied so badly from playing easy shit that just got easier over the years that, by the time I returned home and loaded up some Kid Icarus and Ninja Gaiden, and those games totally kicked my fucking ass. I used to own at them. I could beat Ninja Gaiden with no continues!
I can, again, now, but only after a weekend of brutal training. God it was fun though.
Mega Man 1 beat the shit out of me the other day. I never played it, but I can still beat 2 with my eyes closed. You just gotta get your chops up. All these pretty graphics are making us forget what real games are.

I've always had trouble with Kid Icarus but I found that The Legend of Zelda had gotten to be ridiculously easy for me since the last time I'd played it years ago.
Craineum I am feeling your pain. I think the Virtual Console has honestly just been a kick in the ass for me. I bought Kid Icarus the day it came out on the VC and I sucked. I mean I sucked bad, maybe worse then you did. I sucked so bad it kind of turned me off to the game and I haven't played since.
I honestly don't think it's you or I's age that's the problem. I think it's that back when we were young games were a hell of a lot harder then they are now, and there were no save points to help us out. You had to sit and spend hours and hours perfecting your skills. Well if you haven't played the game in years all of your skills are gone. I'm sorry by the skills you get from playing games today do not help you play the games of old.
I applaud you in your efforts to pick those old games up and try to play them and be good at them again, but those days are long gone. I think it's best to just look back at them and have great memories of the video games of old, rather then try to play them again and have those memories ruined.
Side scroller chops can get real rusty after a while. I remember jumping into Mega Man 2 from the Anniversary collection about 5 months ago, and getting beatdown by the first stage of Wily's Castle. Embarrassing stuff like failing the jumps from block to block on the first Boss. Months later, after spending lots of time getting beat down by N+ and getting some ample time with Mega Man ZX, that section was no (unreasonable) problem.
If you can get a hold of N+, its good re-programming for 2D dominance.
I'm not shitting you BRIGG, I beat Ninja Gaiden on NES with no continues. I could have done it without losing a life, but mother fucking Jacquio killed me, and I had to use the Fire Wheel to take him out. The final boss is a pussy though.
You had trouble with Blades of Steel? Seriously? I picked that thing back up after nearly 12 years and was handing the computer its ass within minutes.
you know, I can still play Mario games with no degree of fail, you sir... are old ;)
But yeah, Kid Icarus is a bitch... confirmed by everyone who has every played it. My ex used to own at that game, and I would just cry watching her play it like it was easy...
I still cry to this day knowing how badly I fail compare to her.
Haha, I agree 110% with you here in all of your funny comments above. I somehow managed to map out and conquer (as I used that term when I was 9 to describe me beating a game) Kid Icarus and to this day I have no idea how I managed it. I tried last month to play it for some nostalgic fun, and got throughly beat down. A real eye opener.
Playing old NES games will make any gamer feel mortal in no time. The combination of poor design choices in games as well as trial and error gameplay is enough to frustrate even the most patient gamer. But it was early in gaming history. A lot of kinks needed to be worked out before great balanced games started coming about. No room for mistakes with the early titles or its game over, try again and again until you make no mistakes. And we did, cause thats all we had. Endless hours of graph paper map making before Nintendo Power finally came about.
Ah yes, I know this feeling. I attribute it to practice more than anything else for me. The retro games that I've continued to pick up and play over the years I'm still good at, but the ones I haven't touched in 15 years own me.
I also don't have the time, nor the patience anymore to deal with games that are "Kid Icarus" level difficult. I wonder how we had the patience to deal with it then and if kids today have that kind of patience. They may be spoiled considering how easy video games are today.
I gave up pretty easy... I got frustrated quickly (another sign of growing old). So maybe it is just being out of practice. I shall sit down and try this theory.
@Justin: Zelda I was failing at because of my memory... I haven't played it for a very long time, and I just could recall anything.
@Njsykora: Yes, but that was one of last ones I tried... and by that point... I was just laughing/crying to myself.
@Charlie: Yeah... I failed at SMB... and I have no idea why, other than I am old :(
@Naia: My son will know the pain of the NES, and he will pwn all.
