By now, the whole Ctrl Alt Del miscarriage storyline is infamous for numerous reasons including a internet backlash and getting torn a new one by Zero Punctuation's review on "web comics." I was a long time CAD reader at that point, and while the sudden twist gave me a "WTF?" sorta look upon my face, I read the news post and thought "alright, he went through a miscarriage, he can speak upon the subject" and I let it slide.
The comic sorta went back to its normal game humor (some would argue that it's "humor") and all was well. Until recently that is...
This was last Friday's comic, and was the "oh no" for me. Then there is
today's comic which is quite honestly the last fucking straw.
After reading that comic I paused then thought "WHY THE FUCK AM I READING THIS!?" This comic used to be a fun alternative to Penny Arcade and now it's just a depressing soap opera. I want JOKES about VIDEO GAMES. I'm all for putting a storyline in there, but not one like this.
There's a reason why Hollywood changes the endings to movies like I Am Legend from Neville realizing that he is the monster in the newly rebuilt society of vampires that are afraid of him and end up killing him to wipe out the monster (real ending) to Neville sacrificing his life so humanity can cure the disease and keep on living (shitty movie ending.) It's because people don't want to come out of a movie being depressed. Works of fiction entertainment are made to engage people's suspension of disbelief and seek an escape in the works. When that escape is just met with something as depressing and shitty as real life, that work of fiction usually is branded as a piece of shit to put it bluntly.
The same thing applies to comics in a sense. With web comics no one wants to be depressed by it, they want a cheap laugh that is something relevant to their interests. In the terms of stuff like Penny Arcade and CAD, they want jokes about video games. Like I said, storyline is FINE, hell PA does story lines sometimes but they're usually art projects basically. What CAD has done is just get lost in all the bullshit.
Tim has taken his "It's my comic I can do what ever I want with it" mentality TOO far. Because the fact of the matter is, it's not his comic, it's the fans. With out the support of the people who read the comic, it would be impossible. It's the same deal with every movie, tv show, or CD that is put out for public enjoyment. Hell, Dtoid isn't Modernmethod's website, it's ours, the readers. What would this site be with out the readers? Nothing. Dtoid realizes this and that's why they've made a site that we all enjoy a lot. And aside from the fans that creep on the CAD forums discussing every god damn little possibility about Ethan and Lilah's
FAKE PHOTOSHOPED CARTOON ROMANCE the fans have sure as hell been alienated by this stream of relationship bullshit that CAD has brought up in the past few months.
I don't even know how to end this, all I can say is "god damn it" in regards to the comic. I used to enjoy it but now Tim has made it flat out impossible to enjoy when the only comics that are funny have nothing to do with the characters and the only comics with the characters have nothing to do with video games. I just cant read, support, or defend that shit show anymore.
Yes it's his comic but you still have to be mindful of the fans. alienating people isn't a good way to run a webcomic.
"This isn't a game, it's a fucking book!"
Then again humor is subjective, I just like to unwrap mine in a witty piece than get my head practically knocked off with a forced pun.
ZOMGPONIES!!!1!!!
In other words STOP READING CAD IF YOU DON'T FUCKING LIKE IT!!
I'm convinced half of his views are from trolls who mock him every 2 days.
Also, Family Circus sucks. Except for PJ...That little guy rocks the shit.
That is all.
And don't bother arguing, you know I' right.
