I've never owned a PSP. And though the DS has been giving it a consistent pounding for... well forever, the amount of high quality games within the library as well as future releases like Persona 3 Portable, and the new Harvest Moon have gotten me to take the plunge and buy a PSP.
I obviously went for the Go, because I just didn't want to deal with switching UMDs and carrying them around, I wanted something that was actually portable, and I had saved up the cash for it. And I have to say, so far I'm pretty pleased with the thing.
The system itself is a looooooot smaller than I thought. I knew it was going to be small, but no where near as small as it is. It's not much larger than m Blackberry and I have to say I kind of like that. Though, for someone with big hands like myself I can see the system causing some aches and pains here and there, but I've come to accept that being that it happens with my DS as well. I was worried with the slide top that it would be cheap feeling and kind of sketchy, but its actually pretty damn sturdy which is another plus.
Now being that I never did own a PSP thus had no old UMDs, I have to say I fucking love the fact that I don't have to buy physical games with this. Sure it takes away from my ability to trade in games for some spare credit, but I never really traded in handheld games to begin with. So, thats another plus for me... but there is an issue
The games. I'll give credit where its due, sony did launch a bunch of games with the system, but hardly any top tier games outside their first party games. Sure games like Monster Hunter Freedom Unite were launched on PSN today, but for every good game thats on the PSN right now, there's a whole bunch of shitty ones as well. 300 the game? WOOOOOOO That's what I want to buy for my new system.
If Sony wants to make the PSP Go a success they need to
consistently put out more games onto the PSN. Keep on pushing out the old PSP games onto the service with the PSN weekly updates. I'm not talking three here two there, a good sizable amount needs to launch every week. I don't care about the licensing, sony needs to put forth the effort and get that shit done. As well as that every new game that launches with the PSP needs to hit the PSN too, that seems like common sense, but I can see stupid shit happening and that not going down.
Overall I'm happy with the Go. I'm just sitting here with MHFU, Fate/Stay Night, and some PS1 games. I'm just waiting for more games to hit the service!
So the final verdict seems to be:
If you have a PSP, there's no reason (and it's too much of a hassle) to upgrade.
If you don't already have a PSP, go with the...go. Jesus, I SWEAR that was unintentional.
It's nice to hear some actual positive talk about this machine.
Sounds cool to me. I thought Capcom had put a bunch of their games on the service by now... are Mega Man: Powered Up and the Power Stone Collection available to download?
They said it was good for new psp buyers, so in a way I'm glad to hear about someone new to the psp getting one and enjoying it. Sue me, I like it when people like things
Check out Chains of Olympus if you want some portable God of War. I also recommend LocoRoco and Patapon; I haven't played the sequels to those, but I hear they're just as good.
I suggest picking up those NIS games while they're still on sale. At the very least, get Prinny and Badman, because they're both going for way less than they're worth right now.
Oh, also, both PQ games. There are some awesome sales going on to celebrate the Go's launch.
What PS1 games did you pick up?
PSPnooooooooooooo!
Your still gonna get screwed when PSN is selling a game for $30-40 and you can pick up the umd version used for $5. Just saying, even if I were a new psp owner I would of gone for a 3000 as the amount of games I can get on the cheap is much more appealing than being locked into PSN prices.
@LK404
Powerstone is up, others not. I know capcom announced a bunch of PSP legacy titles prior to the PSPGo even being announced, but nothing to show yet. I was hoping for some Street Fighter and Dark Stalkers love myself
@Everone else
I never really liked any of NIS games... I don't know, they seemed dumb to me. I'll probably pick up god of war and some locoroco too.
Yeah, God of War was like $15, good price and though you dont like NIS games get prinny, its only $10 and it will drive you crazy!!
Nice! If I was out of the house more and used my PSP more, I might think about getting the Go just because of the more convenient size factor!
I wouldn't buy a psp go, I'd easily rather have the original. Screw that laundry list of bullshit negatives
Sounds good to me dude. I'll get it eventually.
Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions or me and you aren't friends.
I'd get the PSPgo if I had more money and played more portable games. As it stands I just don't game when I'm not at home. I can't for the life of me figure out why I can't do it. Maybe I'm just not a portable type of gamer. Also if I were a Nazi.
Good to know the thing isn't a complete bomb though. I definitely hope Sony doesn't nickle and dime users because I may get one in a few years if it's cheap enough. How're you feeling about the Minis? Have you tried one yet?
Hopefully Atlus/Sony announce some way to get a digital version of P3 Portable if you own a PSPgo but still want all the pre-order/special edition/extra stuff.

Amen to that! I love my psp 3000, and still want a Go, but not having the option to re-download most of my games makes that a no-go (haha) for me! And yes, what is UP with these crappy weekly PSN updates? It's almost as bad as Nintendo and there "weeks-go-by-before-we-get-a-quality-title on wiiware or virtual console! plus, NO ONE knows what games or content is going up until it does each Thursday. Why is that?
