So Operation Darkness was one of the few Japanese games that had a demo on the Japanese marketplaces, but it was also one of the few that seemed to be region locked so I couldn't download it. Last night I was informed by Mr. Nelson that the OD demo had hit the US and Canadian marketplace so I downloaded it and just got done with playing it, so here are some of my impressions with the demo.
First off... The game is very strategy based. It doesn't do a whole lot with the genre's core mechanics. If you've played FF Tactics, Fire Emblem, or any other game you'll be in business here. Its very easy to pick up and play and all you really need is the A button. One stupid little issue I had was the camera, when you go to a semi birds eye view to get a view of the land for moving/attacking the camera can fuck up if you slightly move the thumbstick.
So the actual gameplay, they've done some interesting things. I didn't grasp all the mechanics like what determines your werewolfery or some shit like that. Its really early for me so I can't be faulted too much. When attacking you have the chance of straight up sucking. Like if you use the guns in real life, the farther you are, the least effective they are. Sometimes you will just miss and since you have limited ammo, it offers a bit of frustration. If you do run out of ammo you can go around picking up guns and supplies off dead enemies. If you want to get a building out of the way, hit it with a bazooka then realize that a fucking tank comes in out of no where and you have no bazooka's left.
Thats another thing... SHIT COMES OUT OF NO WHERE. The mission starts with 4 enemies, then some reinforcements come, then some more reinforcements come behind you, THEN A FUCKING TANK COMES so every time you think you're going to be done, nope you're not. So it's safe to say it will take a while for each mission it seems I invested a good 30 minutes into the mission only to have one character get fucked up by the tank coming out of no where and that one character if gets killed ends the mission.
Overall it was a cool game, I have it on my Gamefly Q, but I doubt I'd be able to have the patiences to play this on a rent, I sort of want to own this so I can go back to it every now and then, but it's full priced. This game definitely seems like it would be a lot better at $40 or even $50.
I need to try a demo for myself.
