Nintendo 1-ups Wii's motion sensitivity with the "MotionPlus"
covah | 11:15 AM on 07.14.2008 20 comments

So will the Wiimote now not be just a camera that senses where your pointing with an accelerometer inside? We'll have to see tomorrow, but until then Nintendo has announced something very, very interesting. The MotionPlus is a small little device that plugs into the nunchuck/classic controller space on the Wiimote (it has its own connector so you don't lose functionality) which allows the Wiimote to detect movement more accurately in a 3D space Here is the press release:

NINTENDO INTRODUCES THE WII™ MOTIONPLUS
July 14, 2008
Nintendo's upcoming Wii™ MotionPlus accessory for the revolutionary Wii Remote™ controller again redefines game control, by more quickly and accurately reflecting motions in a 3-D space. The Wii MotionPlus accessory attaches to the end of the Wii Remote and, combined with the accelerometer and the sensor bar, allows for more comprehensive tracking of a player's arm position and orientation, providing players with an unmatched level of precision and immersion. Every slight movement players make with their wrist or arm is rendered identically in real time on the screen, providing a true 1:1 response in their game play. The Wii MotionPlus accessory reconfirms Nintendo's commitment to making games intuitive and accessible for everyone. Nintendo will reveal more details about the Wii MotionPlus accessory and other topics Tuesday morning at its E3 media briefing.

To me, this sounds like the Wiimote will finally be able to track motion like everyone thought it would to begin with. To make a point about what I'm trying to say, imagine if in Twilight Princess the Wiimote actually was used like your sword instead of moving it anyway causing a pre animated swing. This is very, very interesting indeed.

Nintendo, impress me.

Kinda lame, considering that this much sensitivity should have been put in the Wiimote from the start. However, given the right price($20 or less) and some compatibility with certain games it could lead to some cool stuff. I can't wait for Trauma Center:Open Heart Surgery, now with spot on 1:1 controls, where you must operate on the heart in 3 dimensions.

haha Kamikazetutor! I WIN!

But really, yeah it should of been in with the start, but say this was used on a Zelda game or something, it has a possibility of being amazing.

Um... I'm pretty sure Nintendo delivered on all the promises of the original wiimote. This is no doubt a new feature for the controller. And no doubt they will announce somewhere down the line a new controller with this in it. The are just showcasing this first, so all of us who already have this won't raise hell when the new controller is released.

You won because I always redo my blogs after writing them down the first time, so I get the top of the list. :P

I just hope we'll see the end of Wii Sports wannabes...

Yeah, if Nintendo's smart they'll pack this with a WiiPlay/WiiSports-type collection that shows off the enhanced functionality... and has GOOD games, please.

I hope this catches on so devs aren't afraid to use it meaningfully in their games.

Even though we should of had it from the start, can anybody honestly say they don't want this?
