My new PS3... is a paper weight (as of now) [updated with 100% more usefullness]
covah | 6:20 AM on 09.29.2008 11 comments

So early Saturday morning I figure I'll pick up my shinny new PS3 that I've been saving up for. I go down town and pick it up then the clerk asks me if I want to pick up any games. I say "no" figuring since Little Big Planet is not out yet that I'd go home and download some games to hold me over until then. So I leave with my PS3 thinking I'll be all good in indulging in my PS3 goodness. But then the pains of living in on campus housing came up.

See as most people will know living in dorms, most everything that you have that uses a ethernet cable will have to be registered with the school's network in order to hook it up online. Usually this is just a standard give them your MAC address and be on your merry way sort of thing. But I've had some issues with my school's system before (the same thing I'm about to explain happened a year ago with my Wii)

On my school's tech registering site it will give you instructions where to find your MAC address on your 360, PS3, Wii, tivo, ect. For the Wii and PS3 though it says that your address will start with certain characters, lets say for sake of argument it's "00-16-1c." Now if the MAC address doesn't start with that, the site won't accept it, and guess what my PS3's MAC address DOESN'T start with. Yep. The only way it can get approved now is if the master IT guy manually enters it into the system, and guess who doesn't come til work until sometime... today, I hope.

So yeah, long story shot I spent the whole weekend sitting on a $400 paper weight with out access to the internet. Sure sure, I can watch my blu ray movies, but really... I want to play something. As of right now I'm in class waiting and compulsively checking my email waiting for the A-OK letting me know that the damn thing is hooked up online. So hopefully by the end of my classes today I can go home and splurge on some downloads, I was thinking Warhawk, Tekken 5, and Wipeout HD.

...and just now remembering that Xbox Live is down for the day, it better go through today or I'm gonna go nuts.

[UPDATE] Wow, that took a lot less time than I thought it would. My PS3 is now hooked up online and I'm just going through system updates. I'll probably do a blog later today about everything else. Woo.

you shoudla get at least one game to keep you busy for one day or two.
Congrats on your new purchase! oh and show the console to the IT guy so other people that will have a ps3 wouldn't face the same problem.

You should wait until Burnout Paradise comes out on PSN. I can't believe it's only $30 online!

I have trouble with my ps3 connecting. DNS errors over and over again. It downloads games and demos fine, but updates never connect at any kind of consistant standard. Lets hope you get up and running no problems. Mine actually is more reliable using the wireless vs. wired option which is odd. If you got a BC model, go pick up a cheap ps2 game to hold you over.
Nice gamerscore though

My PS3 is practically a paperweight and it's been online since the day I got it. Thankfully Mega Man 9 has changed that recently, but from two weeks after MGS4 until Mega Man 9 it pretty much just sat there.

Congratulations on your purchace though :)

You could've just gotten a router, cloned it to your computer's MAC address, and kept everything behind it.

Now that I have my systems in the living room, my PS3 is the only console that I can play online since it has built-in wireless. I know the feeling of having a deadweight platform... (looks at 360).

...But now my PS3 is in some far away land getting repaired because the god damn BluRay drive shitted out...
*sigh*

That's rough. Artemis brings up a good strategy to that kind of MAC filtering.

Warhawk is the way to go. It's awesome but can be tough at first. And Burnout Paradise is now on PSN too.

Why don't you buy some of the games that are good and PS3 exclusives? There are quite a few.

@Wardox
I pretty much bought the PS3 for LBP and the exclusives from there on out. I'm planning on renting to catch up on games like Metal Gear, R&C, and R:FoM

Wipeout HD, Super Stardust HD, Ratchet & Clank: QfB, Pixel Junk Monsters & Eden, and Everyday Shooter, are all great PSN games I recommend.
You should also pick up MGS4, Folklore, Ratchet & Clank Future, and Uncharted. Also you should pick-up Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet, White Knight Chronicle, and Mirror's Edge on release.

You can buy Warhawk for the same price on disc as in the PSN store now & not have to spend time DLing it.

also WipEout is the best value for any new game right now. $20 is a steal for it. going 600mph at 60fps is some seriously fun stuff.
