Where Are The Arcade Style First Person Shooters?

I decided to write this blog after reading the blog about the new Wolfenstein game. Now, we don't know a whole lot about it yet, so I won't pass judgment on it yet, but I have still wondered the following quite a bit. Where the fuck are my arcadish FPS? Some of my favorite games when I was a kid were DOOM, Duke Nukem 3D, and Wolfenstein3D. Those games knew what they were, and they didn't hold any pretenses about it. You were given a gun, and you were supposed to go kill motherfuckers.

Have they made anything like that recently? If so, I haven't played it. They can churn out plenty of Rainbow Six, Ghost Recons, Medal of Honors, and Call of Dutys, but they cant make one throwback game? I know I'm talking about 360 games here, but thats all I have, so maybe there are some amazing arcade type shooters on PC, if so let me know. And I don't just mean non-realistic games, cause I know there's Gears and Halo, but in Gears there's so much cover bullshit and Halo...meh. Don't get me wrong, I own and enjoy a lot of the games I just listed. However, I just want a game where I get to start shooting bitches seconds after the game begins and there's never a break in the action. I want a testosterone-driven, dick-swinging, explosion-filled, gory first person shooter on a current-gen console. Is that too much to ask for these days?

I'm told that Ghost Squad was supposed to combine FPS elements with an arcade light gun game. I didn't even notice, though.

Maybe find some old Serious Sam game. Or wait for Duke Nukem Forever.

I would have to agree with sevink, that's exactly what UT3 is. It's straight up balls to the wall action. It's fast paced, a "twitch" shooter if you will. No strategy or cover, just death and mayhem.

Was Doom ever in arcades? When I think arcade FPS, I think Operation Wolf. Is that what you mean?

For games like that, you have to go Wii. Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles, Ghost Squad, Target Terror, Metal of Honor Heroes 2, Link's Crossbow Training are just five examples of the genre exclusive to the Wii. Better yet, three out of those five are actually worth playing.

The Club, not a FPS but it looks pretty balls out kill. But this is coming from someone who's only seen gameplay footage. But soon it will be bought.

Wouldn't those be considered light-gun games? Or even on-rails shooters? And are you mocking the guy for a term that is pretty common?

What about The Club? And Jonathan- which three? Umbrella Chronicles, Ghost Squad, and Link?

Quake 4 and UT3 are the newest games I can think of. Duke Nukem Forever looks worth waiting for (assuming it comes out this year).

@QRAZE

I didnt know DOOM, Duke Nukem 3D, or Wolfenstein3D were "Arcade shooters". I always thought that was like.. uh.. the old area 51 game... etc. Yeah?

Goddamn it guys when I say "arcade shooter" I don't mean "shooters that are in arcades". If I meant light-gun games I would have said "light-gun games". When I use arcade as an adjective I mean a lighter, not so serious, fast-paced action game. Maybe I should have used the term "twitch shooter" but I haven't heard it used all that much.

I got what you meant...lol

I agree though we need some more simple, but amazing "just shoot your face off" FPS games.

Well though COD4 was 'serious', the arcade mode in it was a
hell of a lot of fun, racking up big scores got my blood pumping. It kinda threw all of the tactics needed to play online out of the window, and you went on a crazy kill fest.

Also I support the general agreement that UT3 can be a arcade shooter, bloody hell that game is fun, it's the very definition of what you are saying Coonskin. Stupidly fast and 'balls-out, in yer face, blood pumping' action. Not serious at all and awesome to play

The Club is the most arcadey shooter I've ever played. That and Outrigger (on Dreamcast). Serious Sam 1 and 2 are pretty crazy too.

The Serious Sam games definitely deserve a nod, but I think you all are forgetting the king of arcade shooters: TimeSplitters 2.

Damn, how could I forget about TimeSplitters? That is exactly what I'm talking about Grim. Also general thanks for the Serious Sam and Painkiller recommendations.

HERE, HERE! *Raises a glass to incredibly valid blog post point as he eagerly awaits Serious Sam 3*

Also. Dunno if this'll count, its 3rd person, not 1st, the totally awesome underrated Earth Defence Force 2017. Should get some entertainment with that one.

Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather have the meaty adventures a la Half-life and Call of Duty that are refining the presentation of story rather than a shooting spree. But that's just me.
