Time for my first serious long blog, wish me luck! (please remember that it has been a long time since I played this game so I will be using a bit of Wikipedia for help but I will add my own color commentary)
This game is made of so much win I wish everyone can go out and play it either by having an actual disc or
not emulate it. Quoting the story section from
Wikipedia: The game involves a boy named Koh from the town of Monsbaiya, which is set at the foot of the gigantic Monster Tower, which houses a plethora of monsters and bizarre creatures. At the age of fifteen, Koh has come of age and is entitled to enter the tower to slay monsters and live up to his missing father's reputation, his father being the greatest monster hunter who ever lived.
EDIT: THIS GAME IS FOR THE PLAYSTATION 1
Konami made this game in 1998 when Pokemon was hot and everyone always liked a good Japaneses rpg.
So this game is a bit of a cross between Actraiser 1, Pokemon, with a battle system that kinda like turn based. You get to improve the town by building new areas and helping out the local citizens. I like this game because it has a lot of side quests so there is a lot of work that can be done in this game.
The main goal is to reach the top of the monster tower to see what happened to your father while fighting against an endless amount of monsters, while collecting items that will help you like swords and shields and monster eggs. This game is difficult because every time you exit the tower you have to start all over from floor 1 although if you die not only do you have to start at level 1, but you lose all of your gear making things a lot harder.
Each floor is randomly generated and the monsters are different depending on the floor. while you are playing you have to watch out for booby traps (lol boobies) and your Rival.
Another fun thing is the love sidequests, there are seven girls (count em seven) that can all simultaneously fall in love with you, and once the pool is open you get to be lucky enough to see them in their bikinis.
All in all I wouldn't want to spoil the story but I strongly suggest you get a chance to try out this game because it is an experience you will never forget.
Well that's all for this chapter, tune in next time when I outline another great game that people should play.
(I hope I don't fail too too much, but I want to nominate myself for a dtoid card!)
Yeah uh.... maybe tell me the system it was released on?
@dephect: It's a PS1 game.
I own Azure Dreams, and love it, but it's a roguelike. People either hate or love roguelikes. I happen to love them. :)
You lose your levels and gear everytime you exit the tower, but your captured monsters retain their stats, so it isn't quite as hard as it may sound.
@Ashley Davis.
I think you still keep your gear if you use the exit item, because I would always find that one uber sword and I would try to keep it, also what made this game a bitch is that it had an also an autosave, because if you died, then tried to reset and re-load you will still lose your gear.
I found the town simulation aspects to actually be a bit more fun than the roguelike, dungeon-crawling parts of it. I always felt the tower portion became nothing more than searching for Barongs and grinding for Red and Blue Sand given the limited amount of time your pet monsters could act.
That said, it was extremely satisfying to build up your town and see people's reactions as you reached the higher floors of the tower. I loved building the libraries, bowling alleys, and furthering the town in general- gaining the respect of the townspeople (and getting fangirls and merchandise with your face on it!) was a very unique and fun touch.
Best dating sim ever. :P
Actually there were 7 girls and 1 guy that fall for you in the japanese version, but they cut it for the US release.
Man, this game was addictive when I first picked it up years ago. It was a random buy that I became satisfied with. I'm glad to see at least a few others enjoyed it as well. :)
