I was reading a post from my good friend Tim about the topic about Leet speaking and whatnot. And I, for the most part, agreed with his stance on the whole existence: It's stupid, retarded... and anyone who thinks that it's something hardcore or something worth defending needs to step back from the computer and take a good look in the mirror (Preferably with Johnny Cash's Hurt playing in the background).
My fear is that this LEET speaking demographic might sadly be 70% percent of the core audience... sadly the same audience that may have some of these other 'Neo-Hardcore' features:
*They own an Xbox 360 and play it daily. (nothing too wrong with that one...) For more than 4 hours straight a day, typically online.
*They own all/almost all of these games Halo 3, StarCraft, Call of Duty 4, Metal of Honor, BattleField, some sort of Counter Strike, and an MMORPG.
*Have tried to Mod, Hack or script a game to win. (Super cool... HAX0RZZ)
*Watches Anime... in every meaning imaginable. (seems to be a common feature... don't know why.)
*Has a super computer and knows most of the specs and requirements/setting to play any game.
*Believes that the Wii is killing the Hardcore market.
AND SOMEHOW we are suppose to get deep meaningful/educated video game conversations going when all their innovative/landmark experiences (Kings Quest, Lufia 2, Pikmin, Okami) are diluted with a mess of a culture brought to life with Online Bashing/FPSes/Anime/Nerds/Keyboard shortcuts/screaming randomness?! Please!
Leet and it's culture is destroying our image as gamers. It's embarrassing, gaming should have been about having fun and enjoying ANOTHER form of entertainment. But now, this is what we have; people who are actually going to read this, and afterwards claim that they are more Leet than someone else that's claiming the samething, but irony is that they probably don't know what it is to be Leet in the first place because the term 'Leet' doesn't exist in the real world. And if by some stretch of the imagination... if THIS insult means 'Hardcore'... Then I, a person that has played almost EVERY GAME in the span of 20 years will have no part in that. LEET isn't hardcore, never was, never will be, it's obsessive and deserves the title of NEO-Hardcore at best.
So that's it, find all the spelling/grammar mistakes you want... and somehow try to bring me to your level... Because you and I both know that's all Leet is: mistakes. If I made one in this post then, I will acknowledge it and make the effort to not repeat that mistake again in the future. But to go on and defend something that's clearly miswritten would be stupid. LEET is not a language, it's not in the dictionary, It's not something worth defending, so be gone leet speakers.

I don't agree with you, nor do I have any standpoint worth mentioning. But I would like to point out that the word 'leet' does exist in 'the real world', contrary to your statement. It is a word that has a shared meaning amongst a group of people within a certain discourse. i.e: we, as gamers, understand, or at the very least; have a vague knowledge of what it means to be 'leet'.
Also; it is in the dictionary, listed as a synonym of Netspeak, which is:
"the language and characteristic mode of speaking peculiar to the Internet and online communication, esp. acronyms and shorthand used in posts and chatrooms"
We are no longer in the age of shareware and adventure games. This is a new era of gaming thus it's harder for people who've been gamers for a long time to adjust to the 'new generation'.
I'd like to think playing all those adventure, BBS door and MU* type games helped improve my typing/spelling/grammar. Graphics weren't much of a sticking point till the late 90s. So those games I enjoy have been replaced with games that use the same systems but put on those flashy graphics to attract the new crowd.
This generation is all about the online experience more so than ever before. Now it's about getting online and playing whatever shooter is popular while screaming obscenities. No, not everyone does this, but it's enough of a problem for me to never play such again unless with known friends. Why the hell do I want to get chewed out for no reason at all?
Unfortunately, 'l33t' is here to stay, just like 'PWN3D'. You can try to fight it, but it's a battle you'll ultimately lose because it's a staple in gaming culture. Just like weeaboo (man I hate that word) is to anime culture, there's not much you can do about the 'l33t'.
"I, a person that has played almost EVERY GAME in the span of 20 years"
what?
