I had a PS2 but never played SOCOM. I wouldn't call it the defining title for the PS2. The defining title of the PS2 era would be impossible to narrow down to just one game because there are just so fucking many good games to choose from. When I think of 'PS2,' several games and series come to mind. The God of War series, Ratchet and Clank series, the Jak and Daxter trilogy, the Sly Cooper Trilogy, Shadow of the Colossus (although I didn't care for it), and countless other games. SOCOM could be considered a defining game for the console, it was THE multiplayer game for the PS2 after all. That is mostly due to the fact that pretty much any other online game on the PS2 sucked huge balls. SOCOM really didn't have much competition.
I never cared for the Metroid Prime series, but that's just me. I enjoy some level of linearity in my games, I feel this is the bets way to convey a truly amazing story (Bioshock, Half-Life series, Halo).
I was playing Halo PC the other day, and it was kind of 'meh.' That's probably just because it's an older game and most of today's shooters built off of Halo and made improvements and tweaks to the formula. I remember playing it a few years ago and having more fun.
I see you like shooters. I actually really liked Metroid Prime 3, but then again I only played through it once. Have you played Killzone 2 yet or Resistance 2's coop?? Those are where the money is at!
Are you planning on staying this time or are we having a contest or something?? ;) Come join us for Friday Night Fights.
Really, all your favorite games are shooters? Branch out man.
Although I should have been more specific, I said Socom 2 "defined what it meant to play online FPS on PS2", not the definitive title for PS2. I will be more specific next time.
I can't beat the final boss in Killzone 2 because I played through it on Hard the first time so I'm kind of stuck, otherwise it is a solid game. Resistance 2's co-op was alright, but I felt the game was a compilation of gimmicks rather than a solid piece of software like R1. I'll be on often now, because I finally figured out my pass.
KZ2's final boss is a bitch. I hated that fight. There's actually a trophy for beating him in less than half an hour.
The ending isn't very good. It's just an obvious cliffhanger and more of Rico being an asshole. Sorry for the spoiler, but trust me, it's not like it would have surprised you anyway. Like you didn't see Rico continuing to be a dick coming. You're not missing much.
YEEESSS!! To me, nothing has ever even come close to being as much of a masterpiece as SOCOM 2 was. Sujo, Frostfire, Crossroads, and Requiem. Nuff' said...
No Bubsy?!
@ Ron Burgandy:
Radec is the final boss in KZ2 right?
FUCK! Here we are talking about the Final Boss in Killzone 2, I have herd hes a pain in the ass, but im not even on that part yet. Im right before it when your on the balcony getting flanked from both sides and there isnt much cover. Im stuck there, so once in a while I play the single player again to beat that part, but they all end in failure. Im so pissed at that game! However I spend all my time on the online so it more than makes up for it. Anyways, good list. How do you like Resistance 2, is it a worth successor to R1? I think the single player was lacking, they shouldn't of taken out the narrator, but the mutiplayer and co-op are amazing.
@FalconReaper
Yeah.
@PASCUZ46- I think R2 went on a different path with the gameplay and presentation of the story mode in general. The narrator played an important role to the feel of the original game, and I just love British voices in games period. The removal of this narrator, along with some spotty scripting made for not a successor, but a different game that could almost have ran along side R1.
@TEEN IDOL - My favorite map of all time; a title that stretches across all online shooters, has got to be Fishhook. The memories of sniping from the bridge, to posting up in the building with the hostages and rigging the doors with mines, to rushing up the center, the map had everything with so much going on at once it felt like an actual Seal Vs Terrorist conflict.
ehhh i dont get all the love on RFOM
@adultswim810
I agree. It is a solid and unique title, but it's really just a basic shooter. Not that it's not really really good, it's just not phenomenal. Frustratingly difficult too.
@ Buzski
Yeah, that's true. R1 was very good but your right that R2 is fairly different. However my personal preference would be R2. I got a tone of hours out of that game, and while the story wasn't as good as R1, it was a blast to play. I love the Chicago level, it is so diverse and where your never doing anything twice. I really like that level. Also you say you like British voices acting in games have you given Killzone 2 a shot. PUN!!!!!
