I literally just spent two hours on the phone trying to resolve on simple issue: get my PC and 360 to share media. That's it. That's all that I wanted. Apparently, it's a lost cause. And I went through six goddamn service reps while trying. I'm not going to go through the explanation of what is wrong -- I just did it for an two hours, do you blame me? -- so I'll just post a link to the long and fruitless forum post in which Conrad Zimmerman did as much as he could (keep hope alive!).

Here's my journey through the hour and a half: (long post is long)

Person #1:
Someone answered the phone. I explained that I wanted to get my xbox the share media with the PC. After spending 5 minutes explaining what the hell I meant by media sharing, I got transfered to "Hardware department".

Person #2:
After running through the verification process with "Amy" (Serial #, phone, address, name) I explained my problem in a 2 minute explanation. After I was done and asked, "so what do you think?", I hear "thank you for holding this is Chad, what can I help you with?"

Person #3:
Goddammit.
-"I'm having problems with my Media Sharing"
-"Your what?"
(5 minute explanation this time)
-"oh, you want hardware"
-"yes I was just..."

*Halo 3 theme hold music plays*

Person #4:
"This is Mike, how can I help you?"
*Here I went through the verification process again. He understood what the problem was and we tackled it for about 30 minutes. Opening ports, checking versions of software and hardware, turned off firewalls, ran PC Media Connection and Network Connection tests on the 360, tried to reconfigure administrative tools. Nothing happened.*
-"hmmm, hold on while I research more material on this subject. Okay?"
- "No problem"

*Halo 3 theme hold music plays*
Boy Mike sure is helpful. He and I are going to tackle this problem together and fix it by God. My media sharing will be up and running in no time.

"Thank you for holding, this is Steve how can I help you"

Person #5:
"You got to be shitting me"
"Sir?"
"The last guy just transfered me while I was on hold without telling me. What the fuck?"
"Well, I promise I won't do that to you. I will not put you on hold and I will help you fix your problem"
*awesomesauce. Off we went, through the verification and every bloody step that the last guy went through. Every suggestion of his was answered with a "done that one too". Finally he said, "just plug the 360 directly into the PC". Well that worked, but it didn't help one bit because now I can't access the internet on either. After about 30-40 minutes on the phone he says:
"Well I don't know what else to do, this is my second day here"
Of course it is. /facepalm
"I could transfer you to the head of the hardware department"
*sigh* "Fine"

Person #6:
"So the last guy couldn't solve the problem huh?"
"No and neither could the other four before him"
*Went through everything that the previous two guys went through all the while getting put on hold between every new idea...
Me: "I give up"
"Give up sir?"
"Well it's completely fucking pointless. We've gone through the manual, every step anyone can think of, and we still haven't solved anything. It was a trivial point to begin with and I don't even know how I stayed on the phone so long. I need a Guinness"

*hangs up, gets a Guinness, gets on Destructoid*

Conclusion: I'm SOL and telephone support fucking blows.

When ever i call them th person has a weird voice. I'm talking cartoon weird. I think Bill gates and J Allard are playing a joke on me or something. They are also convinced the space my home occupies does not exist.

i loled. It'd be even better if you found out the problem right after hanging up, like if some switch or obvious setting was off (you should be checking right now).

actually, person #1 sounded almost exactly like Niel from Family Guy, same nerdy speech impediment. I swear for half a second I questioned whether or not I was being tricked.

Windows Media Player 11.

Right-Click the "Library" Tab. Click "Media Sharing".

Click "Allow" for your Xbox 360. Apply.

Enjoy.

OMG!!! YOU'RE A GENIUS!!!

If only every service rep, friend, FAQ, xbox support forum, Xbox media setup webpage, and the D-toid forum member could have told me to do that.

Oh wait....they did....twice. ^_^

Alternately,

Zune software.

same steps as above.

Shit's even easier on a mac. Buy a plugin for $20, throw shit in your movie folder, and you're done.

Customer service is ass no matter where you are. Try canceling Direct TV. I was hung up on 5 times. 5 fucking times today!

Last time I just asked to directly be transferred to their manager or whatever it is these guys have. These people would not just let me pull the plug on my service. They asking questions as to why I felt unsatisfied with the service. I was so sick of it by the end that I just said...

"I don't need to explain to you why I don't want your service. Just disconnect my fucking thing. I'm switching to cable and there's not one fucking thing you can say to change my mind. I've already called Time Warner and I need this disconnected by tomorrow."

Fucking explosion.

Everytime I call I get someone with a voice I just can't understand. Its hard for me to get anything done with them, I've pretty much given up on them.

I loved the half-hearted sorry one gave me when I was wondering why I couldn't access my downloaded content, brilliant move MS, make your machines total shit and have everything downloaded tied to that machine.

In other words, if I'm not connected to the net I am fucked.

FANTASTICO!!!

Um...have you looked at what it says ON your 360? Did you forward the ports you needed to and open up the sync settings on the pc as well?

I dunno, every time I had to deal with them, I was fine...and my 360 bricked twice.

That, and I haven't had problems with DRM either....I took my HDD to my buddy's, he doesn't have LIVE. I couldn't play the full versions of certain XBLA titles, and lost access to only SOME DLC, but had no real problems...

Yeah, we covered that in the forum that I linked to. Zune won't run on this computer because it's old & shoddy (or as Conrad explained "because Zune is shite". I was actually surprised that no one every questioned the make, model, RAM, or any other diagnostics of my CPU. I expected that to pop up right off the bat and recieve a quick "thar's ya problem right thar".

@vexed alex
That's because some companies force their customer service reps to prevent cancellation of service and keep customer retention by trying to use incentive packages or convince the customer that the other services they will be switching to are just as bad. I know this because I did this exact same job for NetZero. I spent every day for a month telling people: "you'll like it better after you get used to it. Here, have a free month of service to get accustomed to our service. If you don't like it, you can cancel then". Employees were evaluated by their customer retention. Dropped calls did not count. Hence, you were hung up on a lot.

I died a little inside that month. Corrupt system is corrupt.

yes, I called Linksys to open my NAT, then called Xbox Live to get the port #'s, called back Linksys to get them to help me through their ridiculously complicated administrative system, THEN I called back 1-800-4MY-XBOX and got the ridiculous circus that I describe above. So in actuality, the above is only part of the time I spent on this problem tonight...although I got my NAT open quickly so I left that part out -- the Linksys people from India were actually more helpful than the random transfers I got from the American Xbox support.

Here is a stupid question. What version of Windows are you using? If it is XP it HAS to have service pack 2 installed. I am sure you have gone through all of this before, but to be on the safe side...

You have XPw/SP2 or Vista
Windows Media Player "11"
These ports open on your router, forwarded to the internal IP of your 360

3390 TCP
3776 UDP
5555 TCP

I forget, but I think you need to have your workgroup name as MSHOME

Disable windows firewall

Also, try sharing the directory manually as well.

I dialed them yesterday for the first time. (RROD)

The guy really did have a cartoony voice. I was expecting Indian but this guy was like an Indian with a mouth full of marbles after sucking helium.

I used to work at a really evil and crappy telephone refurbishing company (and let me tell you, refurbishing is nothing more than basic electronic testing and swabbing the entire unite with rubbing alcohol and car polish). We were on camera all day, and if the boss (sitting at how in his undies and robe, gut hanging out) saw something remotely like joy or inspiration in any worker (typically me) he'd phone in and have a shitload more units placed on that person's desk. Well, all of the tedious BS didn't phase me, and so they dubbed me their underpaid tech support guy. Knowing I was far underpaid to fill an IT position, albeit ad hoc, I accomplished nothing but accurate diagnoses. The catch for them was that to implement a solution, they'd have to pay me. Well, the alternative to not refurbish phone equipment was to sit on hold with tech support. I spent about twelve total hours one week trying to get Dell's tech support to even comprehend my questions. At Dell, they hire people for tech support, replace their brains with a handful of bolts and fillet o' fish wrappers, and place their docile, poor bodies at a telephone. It's always a person's first or second day because they can't make it to their 3rd - because people die without their brains sooner or later. I didn't know Microsoft was such a fan of Dell's practices. I be all of our systems are refurbished Neo Geo/toaster hybrids.

The only way I could fix it was to buy the wireless adapter, disable any security on my network and enable a MAC Address Filter. So, essentially, it's an open line to the network requiring the way overpriced wireless adapter.

And, what did I get for all of this? My DivX movies play all pixelated on my TV. So, I use the 360 for Media Center viewing and the PS3 w/Nero 8 for streaming videos to my TV.

It's probably just a router incompatibility, in which case it can't be helped. Sounds like they did their job pretty well, though. They hit all the points, and no one can know it all.
