Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
They forced me into getting it for console only. Is this what you wanted, Activision?! I bought both PC and 360 copies for World at War and COD4...
Yeesh.

PC Version & No more expensive servers to manage.
Hey, I have a solution! Get the console version! It's not as good looking as the PC version, and it really doesn't resolve any of the issues you had with the dedicated server problems or the fact that it's $10 more expensive than the average PC game, but it's in idea!
I for one am glad its happening, fuck PC gaming, its a huge money pit, games are released buggy as fuck, they have security software that does nothing but infuriate the person that bought the damn game.
There's a ton of buggy as fuck console games.
Add: And for consoles, often times you have to wait MONTHS for the developer to "go through Microsoft" to patch the game (see Castle Crashers).
That would have NEVER happened on PC: it would have been patched within weeks.
Basically, yes.
As a general rule, first off, they can hold more players. My big issue with the PC downgrade is that they're going from big 32v32 war fests to 8v8 simplified combat. Now before you say "I like small battles", remember most dedicated servers do have options to have 8v8 if you wish, but the OPTION for more players (more community, more people to chat with) is there.
Secondly, you have modding. Now with dedicated servers, you can mod EVERY facet of the game. Hate the helicopter in Call of Duty 4, and think it's too cheap? You can turn it off. Hate a specific weapon, and think it's overpowered? Nerf it before the devs do (if they ever do). While this is very subjective, all dedicated servers have information accompanying them so you don't join a game you don't like.
Then there's the community aspect. How many people on your friends list, from matchmade games, have you saved? Maybe 5-6? Well, on a dedicated server, you "favorite" that server, and frequent it every time you play. People start to recognize your name; you start chatting with people whom you recognize. Your stats are saved to that particular dedicated server often. Rather than a random match-fest, you're subjected to the same community every time, and can build a relationship with them. Don't like that community? Find one of the thousands of different dedicated servers.
Basically, there's NO downside to them. Of course, you could always argue that a good mix of both is nice, but it's not really hard to "matchmake" dedicated servers yourself. There's a huge misconception that it's a hassle, when really, all you have to do is use the in-game filters to find a particular game you like. It's the exact same thing as matchmaking, you just have to click "join".
Have you not been paying attention? I think it's been explained 100 times over now why Dedicated servers are required for pc gaming.
In order to have a solid community you need dedicated servers. This is not even a debatable issue, just look at stats. Games like QuakeWorld and Quake 2 and UT99 are still being played today because the community could maintain itself without depending on "X" company. Yes, the community is small for those games, but it still exist and that's the whole point.
It is difficult to understand the importance until you've 'tasted the fruit' as it were. That sounds all mystic but I think part of the friction between people on this subject is one side never really experiencing the dedicated servers system. Or if they have they take it as a 'huge bonus' not realizing that this has been a standard system for over a decade.
On a basic level simply think of it as once having more, as a standard, and now being limited to much less. When you have a standard and have then been given a sub-standard outrage should be a given, especially when the cost of said item is not even reduced.
Basically, it's a big deal because you get less control of your own game, the game will die years before it's time, and you'll make less friends.
Like Chronos said, a lot of these old ass PC games with dedicated servers are still being played today: that's VALUE! If I boot up a last generation console game; matchmaking will be dead.
The PC market does its best to alienate potential players, some of my best days were PC gaming playing the likes of Doom and Dreamfall when were much more simplistic yet over the years I have been pushed away by constantly increasing hardare expectations and increasingly complicated hardware specs. I have no problem with PC gamers I just have no sympathy. I am fully aware I will be lambasted for these comments as I am under the impression that the majority of this community is PC gamers.
I see we've also got the usual ignorant crap about how expensive or complicated PC gaming is, and what's this? Majority of Destructoid PC gamers? lol.
Haters gonna hate.
PC games are falling in victim on that horseshit as it is a vicious circle. Capcom at least is trying to look at that field now. Lost Planet was a mess because they just moved the XBOX360 version to the PC platform, but other releases like Resident Evil 5 and Street Fighter IV have been much more polished in controls now.
Steam has rescue the market in my opinion, if it wasnt because of them it could have gone away long before.
PC elitists are just like console fanboys. We -all- hate them, but I wouldn't say every console gamer was annoying as fuck just because some exist, right?
Pc games are different in the mp than consoles, I dont feel superior because i can handle a mouse, you shouldnt feel superior either because you are using a keyboard on a PC or a mac. I dont feel superior because I know my way around windows, and my router and... well, thats it actually to play a game in MP, there is not a big "technical complications" that you wont get with a console anyway. But overall having a list of servers and a couple of filters for playing a game over the internet is not a bad thing. They are called: options. One should have options.
So the deal for me with this issue is that I wont be supporting Activision as a PC gamer. Why? Because I live in south america, I depend on dedicated servers for good ping. So im screwed.
Also around here there is not even 1 360 that isnt cracked, because importing a game can cost around 100usd. As for me, I buy my games on STEAM, same price than in the US, I still have to take into account that the dollar is more expensive, but I still buy those games.
Watching this video makes me sad, the decision by this company stands, and is incredible stupid and imbecile to think that by removing dedicated servers you will eliminate piracy. They wont. I dont get the idea, I hope they stop it and say "we screwed it", but I dont think they will. I just hope pc gamer dont go and buy this videogame that is also 60usd.
Exactly. You can get a top-end rig for $300 now: that's hundreds of dollars cheaper than the next launch console.
This isn't the first time you've said something without knowing all the facts in regards to your PC statements, and the majority of Destructoid is 360 fans, followed by PS3 fans. Hell, I'd say there's more Wii lovers than PC gamers.
I could say the EXACT same thing about a happenstance console experience. It's like going into a well reviewed restaurant, and pigeonholing the entire establishment because your one waiter was bad. It may taint your experience, but if you go again and ask not to get that person, you're going to get a better waiter.
Example bad experience similar to yours:
-I bought a 360
-I bought Castle Crashers, my character was deleted; it took them almost a year to patch that
-My 360 red-rings three months after I bought it
Basically, you need to find a friend who can teach you PC gaming. From what it seems, you bought like 3-4 games, had an awful computer that needed some work, didn't understand how to install the game correctly, and then had a bad experience.
That said, this whole thing going, even though it's about the PC version, is really making me not want to even support this developer anymore. It's making MAG seem more appealing and worth the wait, especially since all my friends who play it and have told me about it say it'll kick MW2's butt. I'm taking these opinions seriously since these guys were hardcore MW fans, playing for countless hours back in the day.
That said I still wanted to finally try a CoD game. Just seems like the publisher is the devil incarnate though.
No one's disputing that! :D
You hang out at your local bar, enjoy the company of people you get to know over time, and build a little community.
You go to a party at your friends house where it's loud and fun, you enjoy the company of some friends, maybe make some new friends, but when its done its over and gone.
Both are great experiences but they are very different. Now imagine someone closes down your local bar for good and says "too bad, but if you want to drink and hang out you can go to the party up the street." The party may still be fun but it's not the experience you are looking for.
PC gamers want the "local bar" multiplayer. That's how we've been doing it for years and we like it that way. Match making is great (I use it when playing my console games online) but its a totally different experience, one that PC gamers aren't looking for.
The main reason it also concerns me and others, is because of the modding situation, and if other devs and pubs copy this idea. Just look at games on the market that were born of mods.
Portal
Left 4 Dead
CounterStrike
TF2
Upcoming Lead and Gold and Black Mesa
Notice all these are Valve engine games, kudos to them. None of these would have been possible without mods and having dedicated servers. I guess one of the best things Valve ever did was releasing the HL engine out to gamers, so they can create their own cool games. Such freedoms are needed, especially if some gamers want to move into game development, be it indie of professional. And hell, look at CounterStrike, still played today by many PC gamers, even in Sth Korea.
Private dedicated servers are also, the only thing that can keep many MMOs alive, long after the central hub has been switched off. (and if they aren't doing that, they should be)
I hope sales of the PC version of MW2 suffer big time, because Activision are getting to big for their boots these days. I'll bag a 360 version, though. I also agree on the match making stuff, which is becoming more so on 360 games. Just give me a list of joinable games and let me choose myself, thanks.
