After reading some info about the upcoming PS3 exclusive game
Little Big Planet I asked my wife to make a Sackboy for me.
The awesome thing about this little character is that he looks like a haggard old handmade toy from the 1800s so you don't have to make him look perfect. His simple geometry and proportions make this project an amazing "almost anyone can do it" one. The beauty of it as well is it's low cost.
I bought some (pack of 4) buttons for the eyes at $.89 from walmart. I also bought small magnets to put in his hands (pack of 4) for less than $3.00 at walmart. And I'm going to go to a craft shop to get the perfect zipper for this guy, which usually runs less than $4.00
Here is some images and info if you know someone who can crochet, and is willing to make one. Forgive me for not knowing the proper terminology for this type of project, I'm going to explain it the best way I can.
Here's how she did it:
Starting with the head, my wife began with the bottom by crocheting a circle and then running a line parallel to start the sides.
She ran the parallel lines half way around the head, then started the forehead and lower jaw.
She then filled in the remainder of the face by finishing out the parallel lines across the forehead and down.
Final head shape.
To make the inner mouth, she simply crocheted a black circle and attached a red half circle.
Then she finished the head by attaching flat buttons for eyes and added the cosmetic white stitches around the forehead and down the back. Then finally attached the inner mouth using black thread.
The body is quite simple, an up and down stitch until you get an elongated bean shape and leave the front open so you can attach a working zipper. (You could put some candy or whatever you want inside.
The arms are similar to the body, except you taper one end so that it gets an elongated tear drop shape. The hands are two small circles with little loops for fingers.
I had her put small magnets in the hands in case I want to make him hold something for looks.
Sew everything together with loose big white threaded stitches to give him that old homemade doll look. This is him finished sans the zipper. I haven't found the perfect zipper yet, so he's temporarily stitched closed with gray thread.
AWESOME! NO?

I have the basic idea of crochet and most times I can follow a pattern almost correctly :o) Any chance to get your wife to write down the pattern? Please? I'd love to make one of those, but I know my boyfriend is going to want one, too :o) lol
