You could just guess? Or look up the words...is there any proof that it isn't just a mindless game and it actually does give rice?
Educated guesses based on root syllables is a good way of figuring them out. Of course, firefox's dictionary search works even better. As for proof, you have no more that they're donating than you do that a web store you order something off won't just rob your money. They seem to be pretty legit, and if they're not, those sponsors would probably be hit for fraud. I don't find it that mindless though, vocabular improvement is a noble endeavor.

FreeRice is not sitting on a pile of rice―you are earning it 10 grains at a time. Here is how it works. When you play the game, advertisements appear on the bottom of your screen. The money generated by these advertisements is then used to buy the rice. So by playing, you generate the money that pays for the rice donated to hungry people.

It has corporate sponsorship, so I'd assume big guns like Office Depot and Apple wouldn't be signing on to something that's a lie.
