Bioshock and Achievement-Induced Paralysis
boatorious | 6:17 PM on 08.17.2008 23 comments

Bioshock was really only the second real game I've purchased for my 360, the first being Gears of War. Most of the time I hop on for a few minutes to play some XBLA.

Soon after I purchased Bioshock I played through the first act and then quit. Why?

Achievements.

I'm afraid that if I leave the first act I won't be able to come back. And then I'd have to play the whole darn game through again to get those achievements. Which I'd never do, I usually don't play games through even once, let alone twice.

So, easy problem, right? Except that there's one other thing I hate ...

FAQs.

Yeah, I know I could go to gamefaqs and find out how to get all the achievements. But why? Why is downloading a text file off the internet an intrinsic part of pretty much every console game?

I know this one too -- because some people (lousy explorers) like finding all of this stuff on their own. That's great for you guys. But give the rest of us a chance? I'd even perform an annoying task in game for a map or something.

So, have lame achievements, FAQ-requiring or otherwise, ever made any of you quit a game?

So you quit Bioshock because you couldn't get all of the achievements? That's fucking retarded.

That's as stupid as saying that you won't buy Braid because you went to a modern art museum and hated it.

...

You usually don't play through games once?

I think you need to find another hobby. Maybe you just don't like video games?

And WTF @ not playing because you won't get all the achievements. You're a terrible person.

I haven't acheieved every achievement in any of the games i've beaten and it's never once crossed my mind that I should stop playing them or to even think differently about them.

Seems kinda silly and a waste of a good game to just stop because of the lack of an achievement or the need to use a FAQ.

I quit you because I didn't get an achievement.

I always play games through the first time without looking at the achievements, then if I like it I'll go back and get the rest. This is exactly what happened with BioShock; finished the game and couldn't wait to play it again. The achievements were just a nice bonus.

You really shouldn't let ancilliaries like achievements effect your enjoying the actual game.

@Heretic

He has a valid point. If you care that much about achievements then just play through the game twice. And you can return to almost every area at any point in the game.

I love you too, you little huggy bear. And to call you a hypocrite, you've said almost exactly the same thing. In fact, I got the inspiration from that comment from you!

:D

You cuntbag. <3

Wow, like five comments telling me to kill myself. That's great guys. It's a personal best. That's up from my previous record of 0.

What's up with the c-blog comments lately? Is digg down or something?

When did I call you stupid? You're stupid to think that. I said you're a hypocrite, which is different. Of course, a stupid person like you wouldn't know that, now would they?

Oh, I certainly don't care enough to read your blogs. You don't inspire me in the least, I found that one comment amusing. You strike me as one of those girls who didn't get the right color Lamborghini for their sweet 16. Whine whine whine whine whine.

It's pathetic really, and simultaneously hilarious. How old are you? 10... 12?

@Boat.

Ya I think Digg is down, your here, not there. It's really stupid to quit a game because of achievements. You should either quit games and life, or grow up.

For even thinking of not finishing a game because of the achievements, please go kill yourself.

Achievements are an addition to the game, not a game-changing element. I have never quit a game because there's some achievements I can't get. I'm wouldn't stop playing HL2:episode 2 because I couldn't find out how to fit the gnome in the car. I've played through it twice, not for achievements, but because it's a great game. I urge the same with Bioshock.
