The fact that you call it an endcap means you at some point worked for retail :p
Former Target Team member, 3 years baby! While retail is generally not an ideal job, working in electronics had it's MAD benefits (got a 50" TV for $100 on clearance, $30 iPod Nanos, etc).
To attempt to answer the question on why Target is so clearance crazy: I honestly have no idea. Target clearances more objects in EVERY department than any other retailer in the business. While most big box stores have 1-2 clearance "sections", Target has a section in every area for clearance. The orders come in from the distribution center, and the employees just tag them: it's not just PC either, 360/PS3 games are also big clearance items.
Space Siege is a pretty spiffy game. Uh, I never finished it though. I guess I should go back to it at some point. Same with Sacred 2.
Target is, I believe, one of the few stores that does clearance aisles right. I've picked up games such as:
Lair for $15
Ninja Blade for $10
Endless Ocean for $8
Tomb Raider: Underworld (ps3) for $15
Shaun White Snowboarding (ps3, Target Special Edition) for $8
Hell, at the 2 near my house I've seen games like Patapon 2, The Force Unleashed, Legends of Wrestlemania, F.E.A.R. 2 and Guitar Hero World Tour for less than $15 each.
Also, I bought my little brother one of those Terminator Salvation T-600 Power Fist for Christmas for about $7
I love finding games on clearance. Reminds of when I found GrimGrimoire for $10 bucks in the Walmart bargain bin.
Got Space Seige for free with pre-order of Alpha Protocol on Steam. it's only worth 10 bucks but I was keen on adding it to the list.
@Magnalon: You betcha. I've got a good two years hauling big screens for Circuit City (RIP) in one warehouse or another under my belt. It taught me the value of a dollar and that having cartilage in your spine is completely optional.
Interesting to know a little more about the goings on there, though. From what I understand, the 98 cent pricing isn't even their lower tier of clearance items. It's 94 that's something like the "last shot" pricing, right?
The last shot pricing can go down even further, yea. They generally do it 10% off, 25% off, 50% off, 75% off, then 90% off.
One local Target has their clearance section right next to where the games are, so there's never much to speak of. However, the other puts their clearance on the opposite side of the electronics section, in the very corner of the store. It literally has 50-100 games there every time I check. While most are undesirable PS2 and PS3 titles, it's actually perfect because few people seem to want to wade through them to find the good deals.
I'll have to start checking out my local Target, I never knew about this! I try and stop by Big Lots once a month to see if they've got anything new in stock. I'm almost guaranteed to walk out with a movie or game for less than ten dollars. Last time I walked out with a lamp. Be prepared to exit the store with something.
6 year Target employee vet. Videogames drop in price like crazy. I remember buying Killer 7 full price (which I feel it was worth, one of my top 10 games), and about three weeks after release it went straight to $20.
The reason for the clearance? Because either a) the shit isn't selling or b) it's not selling enough to warrant taking up shelf space that is going to be made for new merchandise or games...happens early most times, so that when it comes time for a revision, ideally most of the merchandise is bought up. Target does it's damndest to make sure that most products are fresh and as up to date as possible. Some items though aren't allowed to hit clearance (most of Apple's iPods I imagine don't qualify for markdowns) just because a new model comes out. They try to stage it so it happens region wide, not just at one particular store.
Mag, unless things have chanced in the past two years, most normal clearance only goes to 75%, and then it goes salvage if unsold...almost the only stuff that goes 90% is seasonal clearance last I remember.
Nice find - I love cheap ass shit. Too bad Target clearance isn't universal, it's pretty hit-or-miss depending on the store.
"Too bad Target clearance isn't universal, it's pretty hit-or-miss depending on the store."
Erm, it usually is, although the actual day any particular store does a markdown could vary. The only times anything should be on clearance in one store and not another, and this wouldn't apply to video games, is if the packaging is shit and there's an As-Is Repackage clearance sticker on it (usually longer than the near square like standard ones)
I remember I found GTAIII for 5 dollars on one of these "endcaps" you speak of at Target about 5 years ago. What a deal.
