About Me

Hello Destructoid. I play a decent amount of video games and spend just as much time (if not more) reading and writing about them. Why? Thats a good question. I'll have to get back to you on that one. In the meantime, i'd like to play some games and read and write about them.

I've been doing a small amount of blogging in the recent months and I recently decided that if i'm going to be doing that, I might as well do it here where someone might actually read it. Who am I kidding? Noone will actually read it.

I don't really enjoy writing, I do however get an amazing satisfaction from spell check. I'm old school. I remember the day I got my NES like it was yesterday, 1985. Well, actually I remember the year better than the day. Give me a break I was only 5. Do you remember when you were 5? Ok then.

Moving on. My next console was the Sega Genesis. Some of my best memories of that era revolve around the "beef" between the Genesis owners and the Super Nintedno owners. This wasn't some bullshit make believe beef like the "East Coast/ West Coast" beef was. This was real beef. You know, the type were "ya mom's ain't safe to walk the streets". I still have the "SEGA" tattoo across the belly to prove it.

Next was the Sega Saturn. (i did have the 32x and the Sega CD but those are hardly worth talking about as far as I'm concerned.) The Saturn was cool. I remember being rather impressed by the graphics and falling in love with Tomb Raider. Not because of the girl like some of you perverts but because it was just amazing. Somewhere around this time frame I was feeling a little bit of envy towards the Nintendo 64 guys. I don't know why I got off the Nintendo side of things, it wasn't intentional. I stepped into the Sega universe with nothing but the fondest memories of my Nintendo days. But alas, what can one do when receiving such things as gifts. Either way, I was quite happy with my Sega Saturn. That was until a new friend introduced me to his Playstation. (Although that might have sounded gay, by no means was it meant to.) He showed me how much better Tomb Raider looked, and how much better Tekken was compared to anything I had on the Saturn at the time.

This is where it all changed. I was sold. I needed a PlayStation. Even if it meant doing the unthinkable. Getting rid of the Sega Saturn.

And so it was done.

Moving into the the next generation, my recollections aren't quite as clear. I remember having a PS2 and I remember buying my Dreamcast. I don't know which came first but I know the guy who lived upstairs from me could burn those Dreamcast games onto cd's and they would play like a dream. I know he would give me 5 games for 5 dollars, and I know he seemed to have them all.

Could the PS2 do that? I suppose I could use Google and find an answer to that, but I'm trying to prove a point. What is the point? The point is SEGA KICKED ASS and they were steamrolled by SONY! That actually doesn't prove that point in any way, but you know what I mean.

Many years pass

Despite having my beloved Sega Dreamcast tucked away safely in a bed of pirated discs in my closet I purchased my 2nd PS2. This may have had something to do with the fact the DC had long been discontinued by this point.

Perhaps an XBOX would have been a good choice at this point? I was hardly aware of what was REALLY going on in the video game world by this time. I was on the outside looking in. Clueless. Much like I am today. The only difference is, I now have an XBOX 360.

It's definitely had a huge negative impact on my life. My wife moved out. My kids never answer the phone when I call and I cant seem to keep a job for more than a few weeks.

Just Kidding. I'm actually a pretty cool guy and I'm just working on finding the perfect balance of time between playing COD4 and bangin' super hot models.

Cerealy.

At what point is a game "Worth 60 bucks"?
big filth | 2:22 PM on 02.25.2008 37 comments

Now this is obviously just an opinion based question. But the question does pop up quite often. As far as im concerned, if I can play through the game and get at least 10 hours out of it I would say the 60 dollar price tag is justified. Of course 60 bucks holds a different amount of weight to people in different financial situations, but if youre like me, there has been many times that you have spent 60 bucks alot quicker than 10 hours. (ever heard of a strip club?)

So, if you spend the money and the game is total unplayable shit, yeah i'd say thats a bad deal. But If you are entertained for even a few hours, did the game and money not serve their purpose?

I am just curious to see what you guys think is the point where the game is "worth 60 bucks".

Games usually aren't worth $60, but I buy them anyways because that's what they cost these days.

Dynasty Warriors 6 was definately worth the $60 because I looked at the hit in my bank account and didn't cringe. It's totally worthy.

I agree with VWGTI abot that. As long as I don't wish i had my 60 bucks back then it was worth it.

I think the game hasta either have a) huge lasting appeal whether that be replay value or multiplayer (I've officially sunk more time into CoD4 than Oblivion) or b) offer a truly epic story (a la BioShock).

Otherwise, I tend to rent games or only buy one every two months or so. But, I am still a college student. Once I start my job this summer that may change.

Very rarely.

Very few games have enough content to be worth 60 bucks. Mainly its the RPGs that make me not feel bad about spending 60 dollars on them.

I'm pretty sure patience outweighs my desire to spend more than $30 on a game, and I still stand by that rule. I have more willpower than most gamers though.

The extra $10 is to validate the words NEXT and GEN you also bought.

thank you. Im working on my "form" posting skills every day.

But seriously, I like what you said, "if I dont want my 60 bucks back, it was worth it."

Thats a pretty good way to sum it up.

$60/game is why I have Gamefly for something like $15/month. If it's a game I can get through in a few weeks, I could get through two $60 games and only have spent $15 for them.

The software market as a whole has just reached a point of utter pandemonium with pricing - since when the fuck is paying $200 for an image editing program (Photoshop CS2) justified, in the least? So, no - games may be reasonable compared the orgiastic prices you have to pay for other shit, but in itself is still ludicrous.

no,but seriously if a game is awesome or very good with a long lasting appeal it's worth every penny you pay for it

I've never bought a $60 game due to the fact that I don't have a system, whose games are that much. At least until i get my PS3, i won't. However, a $60 is really about $70, and that's a month's electricity. If you cherish a game as much as a month's worth of ac/power, then It's probably worth it. I'll say this, if I had bought Crysis, instead of not-torrenting it, then I would have been pissed. However, Bioshock was worth every penny I paid. If after I beat a game I start a new one, it's automatically worth it.

Some old SNES games were $60 or $70 respectively

I go by hours of entertainment, 30 - 40 is usually a benchmark, but if I can get 20 - 25, I might get it if they are a really good 20 hours.

A game's worth sixty dollars if I play it a ton and still think about it afterwards. Honestly, most of the games I buy are bought when they are at budget level, and I have a field day when a console is on its last legs (see: My expanding Gamecube + PS2 collection).

Games like Audiosurf and Katamari show me that I can have a lot of fun without throwing out $60 a pop. Which is why I'm more and more reluctant to do it these days.

just responding to the title and not the entire article, no game is worth 60 dollars.

but we pay it anyway like the consumerist pigs that we are.

- heavy on the replay (like multiplayer)
- a really great fuckin' story or concept
- i can sink more than X number of hours into it based on its genre

Most games aren't worth 60 bucks, like King said, but some are. The RPG's usually are, like Lost Odyssey and shit.

Also, games like Gears of War and Halo 3 are worth every penny, as well as CoD4 due to multiplayer. I still play Gears of War over a year later.

I agree with Caffeine's post. If it's a single player only game that's going to offer me about 10-15 hours probably not. A short single player game but with a great multiplayer that will provide hours of fun, then sure it's worth it. The only other combo is a long single-player, RPG style, with 50-60 hours.

I'm basically echoing EDS and Caffeine's posts.

Half-Life 2 back when it was pre-order.
With the silver and gold packs, you would get all the old Valve games and CS Source beta.

If a game is good enough that I can put a large amount of hours into it (50 i'd say is the bare minimum) then i would consider that worth the money.

I usually just wait for a holiday to roll around and ask for a game. my birthday, my brother's birthday and christmas are exactly 4 months apart (april, august, december 25th). But this is still a long time to go between buying a new game. i've also considered signing up for a rental thing like gamefly but i'm not sure if it's worth it.

Wow 10 hours? Are you kidding me? You must make a lot of money. I advocate at least 30 hours for 60 dollars and they better be a damn good 30 hours.

If it's only going to be 10-15 hours I will rent it for 5 bucks at my blockbuster and play it in a week or two. Unless it is something incredibly new and innovative, or something I'll go back to time and again (or if it's just a kind of game I want to support, Okami for instance (which was actualy only $40), nope no unfolding 60 dollars from my wallet.

I bought Phantasy Star IV for $119 back in 1994, I think. Plus tax. Admittedly that's about $100 US dollars, but it still stands as the single most expensive video game purchase I've made, outside of music games.

Honestly, I was a little disappointed that I finished it in about a week, but that was after 35-40 hours of playing, and finishing all the Hunter's Guild missions.

So, comparatively, $60 isn't that bad. Over here, the first volley of 360 and PS3 games came out at $70 price points, but since the decline of the US currency values, and perhaps a more realistic pricing strategy, have gone down to $60. So it's actually a bit of an improvement.

I think with the rising development costs and the rate of inflation, $60 isn't that bad.

That being said, I'm waiting for Call of Duty 4 to go under $40 because I don't think I'll get that much value out of the multiplayer.

The worst $70 purchase I made was Motorstorm, because I wanted a game for my PS3. Man, that game was terrrrible.

For me is comparing it with other things I would've spent my money on. Do i get more fun from the game than going to the movies 8 times? More than buying some dvds or a couple of nights out? If so then yeah, it's worth it.
